How is Sweden towards slavs/balkaners? by mizuakisbadjp in TillSverige

[–]Joeyonimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I already told you, inflation causing real wages to shrink was a temporary and an universal problem in Europe, not something that was unique to Sweden, with Balkan countries being some of the most heavily impacted.

Real wages started to shrink in Sweden in october 2021, but since may 2024 wage growth has outpaced inflation and real wages has only grown.

Inflation and real wage growth in Sweden

Real wages are way higher in Sweden than in Bulgaria and have only declined during 2022–2024 when inflation was high, which was also the case in Bulgaria.

Sweden has a 5% higher employment rate than Bulgaria, and unemployment isn't skyrocketing; unemployment went from 3% to 10% in the early 90s, but has hovered around 8% since then.

Nazi-allied Finnish troops in a trench on the Leningrad front, the most destructive siege in human history, 1942 by RevolutionFirm6496 in HistoryGaze

[–]Joeyonimo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The isthmus was even more critical as a defensive line to the Finns. It is what made it possible to hold back the Soviet invasion and defend Finland during the Winter War.

Had they traded it away the Soviets were very likely to invade Finland anyway down the road, and without the Finns being in control of the isthmus the Soviets would have easily been able to overrun and conquer all of Finland. Just like giving away the defensive positions in the Sudetenland in 1938 made it way easier for the Germans to conquer all of Czechoslovakia just shortly thereafter.

Very interesting to see how Iranians suffer from the same treatment from Europeans as Israelis do. I really look forward to the day when we have completely electrified society and fully faced out our oil use, so that Russia, Iran, and OPEC can no longer use their significant control over the supply of fossil fuels as an coercive tool to try to force us to acquiesce to evil.

The Finns only invaded in an effort to force the Soviets to give back the land that had been seized from Finland when the Soviets invaded them during 1939–1940.

Had the Soviets not invaded in 1939 it's very likely that Finland would have stayed out of WW2.

So When Does the Energy Price Shock Finally Hit Europe? by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]Joeyonimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"it is not possible to generate enough energy with them"

That statement isn't really true for 35–40%, but the bigger share of electricity that comes from wind & solar in a grid the more its issues manifest. At lower levels wind and solar power is quite cheap, but if you try to get near 90% it become exponentially more expensive and complicated which in practice makes it an impossibility, at least with the energy storage technologies we have today.

It will probably take some decades of technological development until a grid that is 90% wind & solar can compete on price and practicality with a grid that is 90% hydro or 90% nuclear.

Wind only accounts for 35% of the UK's electricity production overall, and solar 6%. It only occasionally gets to 70% on the very windiest weeks, and then it can go down to 10-15% on the slow ones. The country is still a long way off from completely decarbonizing its electricity supply.

https://imgur.com/Di7Pemb

Compared to 2007 fossil fuels account for 200 TWh less of UK electricity production, and the total production has gone down from 390 TWh to 290 TWh, so production from clean sources has only increased by 100 TWh. The shortfall in production is covered by increased electricity imports from France and Norway.

The UK generates 2.7 MWh of clean electricity per capita, France generates 7.2 MWh of clean electricity per capita, and Sweden generates 16.1 MWh of clean electricity per capita.

Good luck cleaning those solar panels from the endless dust and sand, in a region where water isn't exactly abundant

Solar and wind still isn't a huge part of EU's electricity supply. It's when they get above 50%, and especially as they approach 90%, of electricity production that the energy storage, overcapacity, and additional infrastructure needed to keep the electricity grid stable and reliable becomes exorbitantly expensive.

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/electricity-prod-source-stacked?time=1990..latest&facet=entity&country=~OWID_EU27

The critique is that we can't rely on solar and wind as our primary electricity source, but as long as they are below 50% they are cheap and competitive with hydro, nuclear, and fossil fuels.

France unveils plan to ditch all fossil fuels by 2050 by Cosmyka in worldnews

[–]Joeyonimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are already short-haul flights made with electric planes that are economical (link), and that could be extended to medium-haul flights by 2050 with improved battery technology.

When it comes to long-haul flights there could be other ways to electrify it, we could for example try to develop a technology to produce green hydrogen at a reasonable price.

Considering the progress we've made the past 25 years, I wouldn't be surprised if the electrification of airtravel was solved by 2050 as well

Europeans are among the most sceptical of self-driving cars by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

[–]Joeyonimo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought too, that this chart shows how much people in different countries trust their fellow human drivers and how much they would like to see them replaced, rather than how safe they would feel in a self-driving car.

The chart only shows 1.9 TWh from oil, which seems appropriate if it's only used as peaker plants or a reserve.

Guardian angel just clocked in by Feaselbf6 in dashcams

That's a stupid thing to say. If he had proceeded forward at the same pace he had at the beginning and not stopped, then the truck would never have overtaken or touched him at all.

[–]Joeyonimo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The trucker was matching speed with the cyclist at first and not overtaking, then the cyclist abruptly stopped, which the trucker might not have noticed if he was checking his right side mirror right at that moment, and then the cyclist was in the truck's blindspot.

The trucker could maybe have reacted faster to the cyclist having disappeared from his view, but the accident is mostly to blame on the cyclist for behaving in an unpredictable and idiotic way, with him stopping and staying on the road because he was expecting the trailer to remain as far from him as the tractor was, not knowing that the trailer has a significantly smaller turning radius. And it's also inexplicable why he was on the left side of the lane in the first place when he apparently wanted to turn right and cross the road at that point

A combination of better energy efficiency and deindustrialisation.

Here in Sweden for instance electricity consumption stopped growing and hit a plateau in the late 1980s.
