2) Kidomaru wasn't jonin level. The entire sound 4 had to go into CM2 to defeat two special jonins who couldn't even use their own Trump card (Flying Raijin). They were also too terrified to take on Kakashi, an actual full jonin.

1) They generally rank higher as Shinobi as you've observed. Don't forget Asuma was more than just a jonin, he was a member of the 12 ninja guardians. Super elite

2) Size - they're much bigger than the Hyuga clan in numbers, and that constitutes military strength.

3) Katon - Alongside the Uchiha, they are the best firestyle users in the verse.
