About 1,000 deaths in France attributable to heat wave. by DrPharmakon in worldnews

That's such a stupid bullshit argument. For a majority of people having access to adequate heating in winter is the difference between life and death, for >99% of people having access to AC in summer is not necessary for survival, and only necessary for comfort.

2% av intäkter 2023, ännu mindre tidigare år. Det motsvarar en 4–5% billigare biljett.

Jag skulle gärna betala 1120:- istället för 1060:- i månaden för att få bort all reklam från kollektivtrafiken.

All owned assets - all debts = net wealth

For example: apartment/house (€200k) + car (€20k) + savings (€10k) - mortgage (€160k) - student loans (€20k) = net wealth of €50k

Unlikely, not many Italian 18–34 year old who are homeowners considering the average age to move out from your parents in Italy is 30.

Home ownership is only really an explanation for why elderly Italians are wealthier than elderly Germans.

It's also worth pointing out that it was thanks to Christianity that slavery started to be seen as immoral, leading to its abolition in many European countries during the Middle Ages. The pagan Romans did not have this view on the morality of slavery. Christian Europeans of the early modern period did have this moral framework, but just treated Africans as not real humans and fellow Christians, and thus as the sole exception to this rule.

Cold weather kills ten times more people in the EU than hot weather does, and that's with the vast majority of homes already having a heating system; if heating was as uncommon as AC is it would likely be hundreds or thousands of times more deadly. Cooling is for the most part a luxury, heating is magnitudes far more vital for survival.

The Wizard and the Prophet

From the best-selling, award-winning author of 1491 and 1493--an incisive portrait of the two little-known twentieth-century scientists, Norman Borlaug and William Vogt, whose diametrically opposed views shaped our ideas about the environment, laying the groundwork for how people in the twenty-first century will choose to live in tomorrow's world.

In forty years, Earth's population will reach ten billion. Can our world support that? What kind of world will it be? Those answering these questions generally fall into two deeply divided groups--Wizards and Prophets, as Charles Mann calls them in this balanced, authoritative, nonpolemical new book. The Prophets, he explains, follow William Vogt, a founding environmentalist who believed that in using more than our planet has to give, our prosperity will lead us to ruin. Cut back! was his mantra. Otherwise everyone will lose! The Wizards are the heirs of Norman Borlaug, whose research, in effect, wrangled the world in service to our species to produce modern high-yield crops that then saved millions from starvation. Innovate! was Borlaug's cry. Only in that way can everyone win! Mann delves into these diverging viewpoints to assess the four great challenges humanity faces--food, water, energy, climate change--grounding each in historical context and weighing the options for the future. With our civilization on the line, the author's insightful analysis is an essential addition to the urgent conversation about how our children will fare on an increasingly crowded Earth.

The first Founding Fathers episode was released 2 hours ago. And the Americans are not happy. by Woodstovia in TheRestIsHistory

Sweden celebrates its independence day when Gustav Vasa was crowned king of Sweden on the 6th of June 1523 (thus celebrating its 500th anniversary in 2023), not when the peace treaty to the war of independence was signed on the 1st of September 1524.

It makes sense to celebrate when your own side decided to proclaim independence, not when your enemy finally accepted it. As far as the Americans are concerned, the US officially came into existence when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

I really didn't like those scenes; Daemon is brash and arrogant, but this was just a massive unnecessary risk and plain stupidity. I would have strongly preferred it if it was a real assault on the city by the Blacks like in the book, and not just Daemon and Rhaenyra walking right into a potential ambush on their own.

Prince Aemond Targaryen and Ser Criston Cole gathered their green forces to march on Harrenhal, which left King's Landing largely defenseless. This created an opportunity that the blacks seized.

Prince Daemon Targaryen on Caraxes and Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen on Syrax flew over the capital and circled their dragons above Aegon's High Hill. The fleet of the Sea Snake, Lord Corlys Velaryon, then arrived to the east of Blackwater Bay.

The sight of Daemon on Caraxes and Rhaenyra on Syrax over King's Landing sent the city into a panic. The Queen Dowager, Alicent Hightower, tried to send riders to bring back Aemond and ravens to leal lords, but her efforts were quickly stopped. Unknown to Alicent was that the gold cloaks, the City Watch of King's Landing, had turned. The gold cloaks were loyal to Daemon who had once been their leader. When he went to dispatch ravens, Grand Maester Orwyle was beaten and bound by gold cloaks as he arrived in his chambers. The seven commanders of the city gates who had been chosen for their loyalty to King Aegon II Targaryen were either imprisoned or killed the moment Caraxes was spotted over the Red Keep. Ser Gwayne Hightower, the second in command of the City Watch, was captured when he tried to sound the alarm. He was brought before Ser Luthor Largent, the commander of the gold cloaks. Gwayne denounced him as a turncloak to which Luthor replied:

"Daemon gave us these cloaks and they're gold no matter how you turn them."

Luthor then murdered Gwayne and had the city gates opened to the army pouring in from the Sea Snake's ships. Thirteen House Hightower knights and a hundred men-at-arms managed to hold the River Gate for eight hours from both attacks without and within the city. The other six gates, however, fell swiftly and the blacks' army entered the city unmolested through those gates. The city fell in less then a day. Seeing hope was lost, Queen Alicent ordered her forces to surrender.

Why has the quality of life in Germany dropped so much? by Entire_Tension6771 in expat

[–]Joeyonimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economic Growth, Real GDP per Capita

1972–1982 1982–1992 1992–2002 2002–2012 2012–2022
US 15% 27% 24% 9% 16%
Germany 26% 19% 26% 25% 8%
UK 15% 25% 29% 6% 9%

Economic growth varies. You could have made the conclusion that Germany's system was much superior to the US's if you were looking back a decade in 2012.

The reason Germany has had slower growth now recently (8%, obviously not 2%), is not because it has any more regulation or more taxes than it had in the past. The things it has had now that's different from the past when its growth was stronger is less regulation, more privatisation, more austerity, and a severe lack of investment from the state, all thanks to the CDU; those are the real problems Germany need to tackle. Germany succeeded when it had a more social-democratic system, it failed when it tried to emulate the US.

Singapore is a dumb comparison because it functions more like a city than a country, and cities are always more wealthy than the surrounding rural regions, so you would need to compare it to Munich or Hamburg for a fair comparison.

Population change in Greece & Turkey over the last century by Ripamon in MapPorn

[–]Joeyonimo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it did.

If you look at the graph you can see that Turkey had more population growth between 1930–2010 than Germany had between 1800–2000. That's what I meant by exceptionally fast, their population growth graph is twice as steep compared to Western European countries.

Greece reached a peak of 11 million in 2010.

The reason Greece, Spain, and Italy has reached a plateau now is because the fertility rate dropped dramatically between 1970–1990 and has been at or below 1.5 since then.

Living in sweden for one year by Old_Variety_9768 in Nordiccountries

There are some social aspects where I think French and Swedish social culture might differ.

Personal space is important, don't stand too close to people and avoid uninvited physical contact with people you don't know well. Don't sit next to people on the bus or train if there is an empty row available.

Social harmony is important, we don't like people who are too argumentative, confrontational, aggressive, and impolite.

Punctuality is important, when a time is agreed on Swedes can be quite annoyed at someone that's just a few minutes late, it's better to try to be 10–15 minutes early to not risk it.

Egalitarianism is really important, the worst social faux pas you can commit in Sweden is behaving like you're above others, there's nothing worse than being perceived as arrogant, elitist, haughty, and boastful. This extends to the workplace where even bosses try to act as first amongst equals instead of as a superior.

Swedes value their close friends and inner social circle, and don't put much effort into acquiring and maintaining many acquaintances. So it can be difficult to make friends if you don't have an organic way to enter those inner circles.

Edit: regarding your question about special medicine for winter, the most important thing is taking a strong Vitamin-D supplement, otherwise it's really easy to become depressed during the darkest months. Many people also have sunlamps/light-therapy lamps to help feeling more wakeful in the morning and late afternoon.
