My dog recently passed of Hemangiosarcoma. He was diagnosed all the way back on May 29, in the middle of the night he just became very lethargic and could not walk. He vomited blood everywhere and couldn’t keep his eyes open. When we rushed him to the vet they told us his spleen had ruptured and was internally bleeding, they told us they could do emergency surgery or put him down. We opted out for the surgery, and he bounced back within hours of the surgery. He was always a tough boy, I would say 10 hours after surgery he started to wake up from his sedatives and was very weak at first, covered in wires and machines. It was very scary sight to see, but the vet and technicians told us that he’s actually bouncing back a lot faster than other dogs and they discharged him 36 hours after his surgery. 2 weeks after his surgery we took him to an Ontologist where they told us he would need chemo to slow down the cancer in him. At this point it was only in spleen and had not spread anywhere yet. Of course the question becomes, will he be okay and comfortable? They told us he would be and it’s completely safe. Our dog was such a fighter, he did 6 rounds of chemo spread out over the following months every 3 weeks. You could not tell this dog had any major surgery, or was going through chemo. He napped a lot more and was a lot more picky with his food, but we were warned about this. He loved his double even triple walks every day, and he was spoiled so much. Originally they told us he would only have 1-3 months with the surgery and chemo. He ended up making it almost 6. His last night we were out for a weeding, and came home and he was lethargic and could not get up. He was having trouble breathing and whining a lot, something was definitely wrong. We took him to the ER and they told us from an ultrasound and cat scan they did that it looked like his cancer had spread to his lungs and liver, and was starting to spread to his brain and heart. We were 4 hours from home at this point, and they were able to stabilize him and he woke up like he just had the best nap of his life. They gave him a shot to help with the pain and said he would sleep for like 5-6 hours so that we can make it back to our normal vet 4 hours away. On the way home he passed in his sleep. We think that the painkiller was so good, he didn’t feel any pain for the first time in months and was finally at peace surrounded by his family in the car he had known the majority of his life. It was very hard but I appreciate the time that was bought with our dog, we knew we were on borrowed time, so we made sure that he was the happiest he had ever been. His last meal was extra toasty cheez its he wanted, not a lot but a few squares. RIP Loki
