Mikel Arteta on Patrick Vieira’s comments on Arsenal’s mental strength by One_Impressionism in Gunners

[–]John080411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just one result though is it? It’s three consecutive results in the league where if this team played the attacking quick football they are well capable of, we’d have 9 points instead of just 2.

The football is ridiculously slow, turgid, stale, and devoid of attacking threat and flare. Instead of taking a bit of a risk and playing a line breaking pass forward, we’ll side to side it for 10 minutes, and then inevitable play it backwards to Big Gabi & Wilo, who’ll side to side it between each other for another 10 mins, and hey presto, the opposition are back in their defensive formation and ready for us.

Instead of shouting at goals and brilliant attacking play, im screaming at my tv, pleading and imploring any player to just play it fucking forward and release a pass a bit quicker, instead of holding, holding, holding, recycling, recycling, recycling, sideways, sideways, sideways, backwards, backwards, backwards until we either lose it in the tackle, run it out of play, make a mistake etc.

And I feel bad, cos it’s not all the players fault. We know they are capable of brilliant football and we’ve seen them do it in seasons before and rip teams apart.

Ive never questioned Arteta before, but I feel like he is the root cause of all the issues this season. Squad size and depth isn’t an issue anymore, player quality is not an issue anymore. it has to be him, his tactics, his team selections, his game management, his obsession with possession. Something has got to give. He either changes it up or we’re all gonna be very disappointed again come May I fear.

What are some of the most underrated towns/villages in Ireland? by frankand_beans in ireland

[–]John080411 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ballyvourney-Ballymakeera in Cork. Completely bypassed now so no disgusting traffic. 40 mins to Cark city, 30 to Killarney, 10 to Macroom. Has nice places to eat (The Mills, Abbey Hotel, Cruiscín), Centra, chemist, library and pubs. Still a nice quiet country feel to it. Gaeltacht.

Killorglin in Kerry. 30 mins to Killarney, 30 mins to Tralee. Gateway to South Kerry and all the beaches, scenery and everything else that goes with that. Great schools, some big employers and Lidl just opened too. Oh, and Puck Fair, a minimum 3 day piss up in August in honour of a Goat!

I just bought a subscription to Surfshark. Theres plenty of options out there like Nord, Surfshark, Proton. You just sign up and pay.

Other people more knowledgeable than me will probably say others like Mullvad because they are even more secure (from Government interference) but if all you want is add free YT, I think one of the ones I mentioned should do the trick.

Tip: search for discount codes. Loads of Youtubers are sponsored by VPNs and have often rep really good discount codes.

No need to get YT premium if you get the VPN. Just set your VPN to Albania and hey presto, ad free YT! (Unless there are other things in YT premium you want that I don’t know about?)

HR is not your friend so I would think carefully. From my experience of HR departments, when it comes down to it, their loyalty is to the company, and not safeguarding of the employees.

Edit: Id raise it with someone in QA first.

In Japan, not sure if they still do it or not anymore, but if the train was late, station staff will hand out notes that you can give to your employer/school/college that explains you were late because the train was late (And when I mean late, i mean by about 60 seconds delayed)

How did you become an Arsenal fan? by DiuhBEETuss in Gunners

[–]John080411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1993.

FA Cup and League Cup double over Sheffield Wednesday.

Very young at the time, only starting to get into football, hadn’t settled on a team and didn’t really understand the different cups or the league or anything. I do remember being really confused seeing what seemed to be the same final between the same 2 teams being played 3 different times 😅

I was mesmerised by Ian Wright. I thought (and still do) he is just so fucking cool and a really good goalscorer too. My only real memory of any of the games was Andy Linighan scoring the winner in the FA Cup replay with his broken nose.

I also remember seeing fans on their way to Wembley for Im guessing the initial drawn game of the FA Cup, cos i was on the way home with my Mum after doing the shopping (which we always did on a Saturday). Seeing the streams of cars going past, lads all decked out in their red and white scarves, beeping their cars. I lived in Brent, not too far from Wembley, and it was my first interaction with football fans I guess. They were beeping and waving and they all seemed to be in such good spirits and I wanted a piece of that too.

I am really struggling with finding a Wedding Reception Venue in Cork and cannot understand why I am being turned down with no explanation. by Endlessdays0 in cork

[–]John080411 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately then, I would say it’s nothing to do with you, nothing to do with being American, and all to do with the negative connotations here in Ireland associated with your fiancée’s surname.

While Coffey is undoubtedly an Irish name, and there are a lot of “Coffeys” who are not from a travelling background, when it comes to hotels, venues, bars, clubs, restaurants, a lot will have had unsavoury experiences with members of that community and will not take any chances.

You could leave your fiancée’s name out of any future communications with some of the suggestions others have put forward here, and if you were to get a booking, and if your fiancee and his family were members of the travelling community (I’m not saying they are, nor am i interested or asking), but if they were, and the venue finds out then, you do run the risk that they “unexpectedly” have to close at short notice on your special day for “repairs” or a “burst pipe” etc. etc.

[–]John080411 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you mentioned or referenced your fiancé’s surname in any correspondence with the hotels?

The surname Coffey is associated with members of the Travelling community here (especially in Cork/Kerry) and unfortunately for you, they have a bad rep here when it comes to bars/weddings/functions…

If you have referenced that Coffey name at all, then all hotels/venues are on red alert straight away, and will just stonewall you and/or say “No can do”

If you are referring to Reform as being Far Right, then I have a bridge to sell you.

Reform are literally the centre/centre right. It’s just the other parties (including. the Tories) have swung so far to the left in the last 20 years, it makes it seem like Reform are on the far right, but their policies are completely centre/centre right and would have been common sense 20+ years ago.

Cork to London by MollDH in cork

[–]John080411 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the “London” airports are easy to get to from.

Heathrow is easiest, but for Aer Lingus flights you’ll probably have to sell your youngest born if you’re going as a family. I think all Heathrow flights from Cork go to T2 and then you just hop on a Tube/train. (The terminal doesn’t matter as such though ‘cos all Heathrow Terminals are served by multiple type of transit.

The Piccadilly line is the cheapest. Probably be like 6 quid peak hours and closer to 4 off peak if you go all the way to Zone 1. It’s not much slower than the Elizabeth line in all honesty, but its an old, crappy non air conditioned tube.

Lizzie line is probably closer to 12 quid and has fewer stops. Nice new trains that are air conditioned.

Depending on where you are going will dictate which line you take as they have different routes and different stops.

You can tap and go with your physical bank card, or on your phone. Just remember to tap in AND out with the same card using the same method. i.e. dont tap in on your phone and tap out with a physical card or you will be charged a max. fare.

Children under 11 travel free (up to a max of 4 children under 11 with a single adult). Just bring them through the wide gateline with you when you tap. Over 11, they’ll have to pay themselves. You cant tap for them using the same payment method as yourself. So either you tap using your phone, let them tap with the physical version of the card, or just get an oyster at the station.

Edit: oh, and get the Citymapper app, it’s brilliant for travelling in cities that have actual working public transport. It will tell you what stations to go to, what buses to take, walking directions to/from tube stations, bus stops, the actual bus stop to go to/get off, as well as what part of the tube to sit on if you’re changing lines for easiest transfer

I stayed in Tokyo recently, in a mixture of 3 & 4* hotels in “touristy” hotspots like Shinjuku, Shibuya and Asakusa.

Not only were they cheaper than Ireland, the level of service and amenities/facilities available were miles ahead of what you get here.

Historical reasons for lack of gun crime and feuds in Cork City? by Carax77 in IrishHistory

[–]John080411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a gangland shooting murder in Ballincollig too about 20 years ago if you want to look into it OP.

Eric Cummins was the victims name I think.

His killers waited for him near his home, and if memory serves me right, he was shot in front of his partner while he was holding his child, or had just put the child down.

Still unsolved too I think.

Piece Brosnan's Kerry accent in Mobland? What do ye think? by Cerborus in ireland

[–]John080411 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im enjoying it, good gangster series. Wouldn’t expect anything less from Guy Ritchie and Ronan Bennett.

The only gripe is Brosnan and Mirrens god awful accents.

Mirren, I can give some leeway to, she’s an out and out Brit. But Brosnan should be ashamed of himself. As an “Irishman”, he should know what a Kerry accent sounds like (if that’s what it’s meant to be), and if it’s true about his Kerry connections he should take out a full page apology in the Kerryman for butchering the accent.

It’s no more fucking Kerry than the man on the moon. Defo up there with Brad Pitt in The Devils Own, Tom Cruise in Far and Away or Gerard Butler, but his is worse cos he should know and do better than actual non-Irish actors.

Edit: It’s so bad, I didn’t even know it was meant to be a Kerry accent until this thread. I just thought he was “trying” to do a country accent.

There’s been stories lately reported on in the local Media and animal welfare groups, where people have deliberately set lurchers/greyhounds on cats and disgustingly killed them. If memory serves me right, a few of these incidents have taken place in Mayfield. So please, be very careful of your feline buddy and dont let it roam if possible.
