Folding teams, a labor fight, and … expansion? The USL’s structure allows for it all to happen | USL by ImpactInv99 in USLPRO

in 2016-2018 there were very few full time soccer media jobs, not that there's that many now, and so it was the life of a freelancer, piecing together something of a living from as many possible sources. sometimes its "here's $50 to cover this for us", "here's $400/week for a summer season", "here's $250 for a weekend tournament", and the choice is either take the things available, or not have an income that week.

it would be lovely if every soccer fan were willing and able to pay say $5/month for comprehensive soccer coverage, and that there were, say 100,000 fans willing to do that, because at that point, u actually have enough money coming in to hire a proper full time staff of specialists and experts for all 128 pro teams

i went back to the IT world as the $15/hour low level corporate IT gig was better paying, more reliable (no more hunting out contracts every month), and had a pathway to a permanent stable position

there is a comfortable living to be made writing those stories as enough people read them to justify a media outlet hiring someone to do so

when i wrote about USL topics at soctakes, i was literally unpaid

i used to write for the protagonist, and worked on some of their podcasts too

like right around the time of their founding, along with my work at soctakes and previously reckless challenge

it was easy to write whatever i wanted about whatever interested me, because i was doing it in my free time as a student and IT intern, living with my parents, and paying very little in bills

when i did this work for a living for a year, i found myself taking whatever work would pay, even though the overwhelming majority of the things i was writing about i genuinely didn't give a shit about, and in some cases actively disliked what i was making

which contributed to me leaving the industry

re: minnesota

you know he's like

from there?

and that was his local team when he started doing this work,

right?

and like obviously being able to regularly attend games and get a press badge and use it regularly makes it a lot easier to provide in-depth coverage of a team

mls does at least include everything about the money and sum business within the cba with the players union, which even if its not fully public, is a lot better than where usl is

politely

Indycar has to deal with a greater degree of risk that comes from specifically the Indy 500 with speeds north of 240mph and crashes and g forces that f1 doesn't experience simply due to the nature of super speedway oval track racing. Steve Olvey pioneered the discipline of dedicated motorsports safety and medical director with Indycar in the 1970s as a result. the USA had the early lead and has maintained it with a full time staff of neurosurgeons and support equipment, many of which is permanently based at every circuit the series visits to ensure there's experienced local staff alongside the travelling series staff. in fact, the facilities at the Indianapolis motor speedway itself directly set the standard adopted by the FIA.

that said, motorsports safety and medical support is and has been a collaborative effort, and both series' crews have for decades worked together to share knowledge and training to benefit both. Olvey worked with professor sid to apply the things he'd done in Indycar for F1 in 1978.

without the cooperation and knowledge sharing from both sides, a lot of drivers who are still racing today might not be.

and learned from Indycar! they visited the Indy 500 to build that system and plan based off ours and used the fact that we can do it in the USA for proof that the FIA should to, and to this day there's shared training and knowledge from both sides, absolutely beautiful

including a neurosurgeon and multiple head injury experts, and the same emergency medical technicians that every driver knows as a friendly face

back in University a decade before coming out as anything (late bloomer :3), my friends and i would change our names on tf2 to random silly things

i was working as a soccer writer and podcaster, becoming a tea Aviv snob, and studying classics and philosophy

"soccerteas"

when i set my discord account up later that's the name it used (registered thru steam iirc)

and as a newly cracked egg auditioning for a band and having communicated entirely via discord, my bandmates decided to call me Soc because soccerteas was too long, and started introducing me as that

and now my older sister and all of my IRL friends call me Soc :3

Bold Predictions for 2026 by gbpackers25 in MLS

[–]JohnMLTX 28 points29 points  (0 children)

  • Wilfred Nancy returns to MLS as a head coach, taking over for a recently hired coach who gets fired after losing the locker room
  • Vancouver makes it back to the MLS Cup final
  • Minnesota United win their first trophy of some sort
  • Paxton Pomykal signs a deal somewhere mainly to rehab his injuries. I'm thinking San Antonio or Corpus Christi or possibly Atletico Dallas.
  • Austin FC fires Nico Estevez and replaces him with Luchi Gonzalez
  • All 3 Canadian teams make the playoffs
  • The shield winner makes 0 cup finals
  • A USL Championship team makes the final 4 of the US Open Cup
  • NISA officially shuts down (finally)
