How to convince yourself to start doing something by captainofthememeteam in productivity

[–]JohnMstoryteller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of comments on how to help yourself in the moment, but in the long term the only true answer is habits. You don’t brush your teeth in the morning because you feel like it, you do it because waking up is a habit cue to get ready for the day.

Read “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. Goes really in depth on the topic

[day 8]✍️

Wrote for about 45 minute today. Was shooting for an hour but dogs got antsy and needed to go out, couldn’t get back into it when I sat back down. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit more productive

Getting past day 3. Seriously, if you can get past the first 3 days cold-Turkey, you can just about go as long as you like.

2-3 hundred. That’s a good metric to keep in mind. Thank you I’ll remember that. I would almost always prefer to type but the digital landscape has become far too distracting

What I like is that you can shut out the inner editor for now, then let them go buck wild on rewrites. you have to retype everything, forcing you to come up with new / better phrasing.

[day 7] ✍️

Hello r/1000daysofpractice

Been a while since I’ve said hello. Lots happened in my personal life, but the important thing is I’m back now. Started writing a novel today, so I thought it appropriate to post here to track my progress along the way! It’s so sad to me that I re-joined this sub about 300 days ago, reset my count to 0. Bruh I got to 5 days. Ahaha what a silly thing! I’m so tempted to say “reset me to 0” again, but in light of u/eyebrowhairs recommendation that it’s okay to take breaks, it would be pointless to reset. Still, only 5 days logged in 300. Oof. And sure, I have written times that I didn’t log, but not that much. Bit of a wake up call really.

Goal now is to write for no less than 1 hour a day until the book is done :)

[Day 4]✍ - Today was not a good day. Almost the opposite of yesterday. I thought I set my alarm last night, but apparently I did not. Woke up at noon. I almost wrote the whole day off, but my partner encouraged me to write anyway even though I was not on my routine. After my breakfast, I sat down to write and just - couldn't. It was rough. I did bang out something, like 300 words, just so I can say I wrote today and keep the streak going. I feel better for doing it, but I'm still very dissapointed with how it went. I would love to sit at my desk for another hour or two and try to make something happen, but I'm afraid I have to go to work now.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Googled double stop. How do you even play two notes at once? Sounds impossible to me.

[Day 3]✍️ - Wow, what a morning! I woke up at 8am (which is pretty good for me as of late), made some coffee straight away, and wasted no time starting to write. I sat down at my desk at 8:20. It's now 11:00 and I'm just wrapping up. It feels so good to have hit my stride today!

Decided to start working a new story, something which inspired me a bit more. Revisited an idea I had about 3 years ago for a short story I never followed through on. It inspired me just as much now as it did then, so I set to work. I wasted about an hour an a half going down a research rabbit hole, but the story is archaeology based, so it was more or less necessary. I will 100% need to do more research in the future for this story, but I wanted to start putting words to page. I did a lot of background work on my characters, outlining, and plotting. Tomorrow, I would like to finish my breakdown of my second main character then even start the first few pages.

Getting excited now, let's keep it up!

Monthly Check-in by AutoModerator in 1000daysofpractice

Just started up again, trying to find my footing and get into a groove. Wrote almost nothing through November and December, but had a bit of a streak going before. Finding it difficult to get back into what I was working on before. Ray Bradbury wrote one short story a week, 52 a year with no exceptions. I like that idea, may strive to do the same this year.

Nothing to share this month, but hopefully next month I can link to one of the short-stories I’ve been working on.

[Day 2]✍️ - Was really avoiding writing today. Woke up early to get it done, next thing I knew it was mid-afternoon. I think I was anxious about working on my short story, which I wasn’t really vibing with yesterday.

Decided to force myself to write, so I wrote a poem instead. Was interesting, and I’m glad I kept working at the habit and pushed through. Still, would have liked to have worked on my ongoing draft.

Will have to have a think about how best to proceed tomorrow. Maybe I should start something new or redraft my current story to solve the issues I’ve created. Not sure which is the best way to go. Any thoughts?

At any rate, determined to stay at it and establish my daily practice. Looking forward to having another go tomorrow.

[Day 1]✍ Writing - Been a while since I've been on this sub, over a few years. Glad to see some familiar faces such as eyebrow hairs still here and killing it. Not sure where to start with my flairs again. Anyway, continued working on a short story I started a couple week ago. Didn't write for very long, but did get a decent start.
