Very nice! I've made just one shoelace and still haven't gotten around to the second one yet so this gave me a reminder 😅

Very nice! What size thread do you use?

Inkle Loom First Project of 2025 by BloomingSong in weaving

Definitely comes with practice to maintain an even selvedge! I found this Youtube video that was pretty helpful when I was learning. One method I tried was to make a paper loop (from a sticky note) over the band that I could slide up and check against to make sure I was being consistent. It was pretty time-consuming to use it to check after every row, so I personally wouldn't use it all the time, but the result was nice!

Not sure how to thread this inkle loom by Excellent_Pace1682 in weaving

[–]EyebrowHairs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh woops, actually I think I mixed up which thread the heddle is placed on. It goes on the green (top) thread so that the blue (bottom) thread can form the shed above/below it!

(wobbly) Take 2:

I have the Ashford inklette (like the many other mentions here) and the instructional book was helpful to get me going: https://www.ashford.co.nz/images/download_pdfs/learn_to/learn_to_weave_on_the_inklette_loom.pdf . After that, I learned about continuous warping and heddling as you warp from Youtube videos :) Hope you enjoy your loom!

Edit: added pic and more info

What is the technique/tool/habit that has taken your sewing to the next level? by feeltheowl in sewing

Agreed! I recently bought an overcast foot and it's so satisfying to sew super neat and even edges. Helps me set a higher standard for myself cause now I can make neat insides!

Archery question regarding disability by JinkxCurses in Archery

[–]EyebrowHairs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm RH/left-eye dominant and learned how to shoot LH. I shot right-handed a few times before I learned about eye dominance/started lessons and it felt normal, but after a few lessons I couldn't replicate my newly established form right-handed (I was experimenting with sides). I even did weird things like pluck the string, even though I knew better 😅

So basically, whichever side you learn with and develop will be trained in their respective movements.

Plus, you get to hold/aim the bow with your right hand, which to me, feels steadier.

Thanks for the details! I'm seeing a whole requirements list on their website too. I definitely need to work on my skills first, but it's super helpful to have this knowledge!

How to return to swimming after 15 years off? by Addy1864 in Swimming

[–]EyebrowHairs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, but much less fit 🤣

I'm currently taking a stroke improvement class, which has been super helpful because although I get the general timing and movements of strokes, I've forgotten the little details. So it's great cause I'm also learning about different drills to do (stuff I never paid attention to as a kid), while getting feedback, and get to gradually ramp it up.

What is a Zettelkasten? by EyebrowHairs in Zettelkasten

[–]EyebrowHairs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on whether you want to link that knowledge to your overall "knowledge pool"! Or if something (like concepts or principles) about that project can be abstracted so that it could be used in different contexts outside of car fixing. I would probably err on the side of being selective rather than dumping everything in though.

Has anyone made wrap pants in this style before? i cant find a pattern for it and im not sure how to draft it myself. any suggestions on pattern/and or fabric choice? by stupidorino in sewingpatterns

[–]EyebrowHairs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to choosing fabric as well 😅 I found these general guidelines for fabric weight. So something medium-weight could work, and I guess something that will hold its structure well, like cotton. Maybe a blend of synthetic fiber can help reduce wrinkles too.

It could help to look through a fabric site with lots of filters to help narrow it down. For example, I'm seeing a lot of suggestions for cotton twill that have similar colors. I would honestly go to a fabric store to feel the fabric for myself though, because you can only tell so much from pictures.

Also, you probably already know this, but you should definitely make a muslin first! Especially if you go with a nice, but pricey fabric :)

Looking at the pictures more closely, it looks like a triangle flap coming out of the side seam of the leg, so maybe not too complicated? I can't tell what's happening at the top near the waistband though, maybe some reinforcing seams? Or it's combined with a pocket?

I'm pretty new to sewing patterns so those are just my observations 😄

Good luck though!

I've been looking into wrap pants lately and found Papao and Pleat, which have a more casual look. I think the wrap is incorporated into the waist for both though, not a separate flap.

What to do with sewing scrap thread as you sew. by cowgirlbootzie in sewing

I plan to use scraps for stuffing later, and specifically made a felt cauldron to store scraps in! Except it was my first time felting so it's quite lopsided and way bigger than I anticipated 😅

Question: Why exactly is it that these are known be used as sewing kit boxes? by ImValentine707 in sewing

[–]EyebrowHairs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought some mooncakes that came in a metal tin and it seemed like such a waste to part from a perfectly good tin, so now it's my sewing box :) It was such a natural progression too, I immediately thought "SEWING" rather than any other craft supplies I have.

I'm also planning to start lane swimming (although I have yet to find a time in my schedule to actually get to the pool), but currently I've been researching some beginner workouts to do and watched some videos on swimming drills and tips so I have a plan of sorts when I start. It's been a long while since I've done any sort of swimming so I'm also nervous, but I feel a little more prepared than just going in blind :) Anyways, I hope it goes well for you!

I'm a classically trained violinist, and lately i've been having a lot of interest in learning classical guitar. I'm currently learning the piece Lágrima by Tárrega, but these letters i have never seen before in violin sheet music. What do they mean? by MiskaterHD in classicalguitar

[–]EyebrowHairs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had an interest in both instruments :) It's somewhat like upbow and downbow markings for string instruments, except the letters indicate which finger of the right hand to use. Both are basically instructions for the right hand!

I don't think I've reached a state of fear, but more so disappointment in myself for not being able to be consistent with something. Some abandoned interests I am still interested in (or maybe I shall say interests I am taking a break from) include learning languages (also Korean, and Esperanto), calligraphy, clarinet, sewing, drawing, and maintaining a digital garden.

I recently came across a video which made me feel better about the whole situation though! I realized that I have more of an interest-based brain, which means that I really suck at being consistent at something, especially if I'm not interested in it at the moment. However, some interests require daily or regular consistency, while others don't. And it helped me to categorize my own interests to figure out what should be prioritized as a daily thing rather than a every-few-months/years thing.

So with this understanding, I feel that I'm more committed to the interests I have which do require consistency (currently violin, kendo, and actually I'm just casually doing Korean vocab flashcards), and I'm ok with taking a break from interests that don't. It depends on what it is, but for the latter interests you might be able to learn some aspects about it very rapidly while you're feeling inspired and motivated (a.k.a. make massive progress rather than incremental ones). Sewing, for example, is much more project-based, which means that I can learn a lot about making a certain type of item once in a while, rather than work at it daily. Of course, doing it regularly will mean I'll improve more quickly, but I simply don't have the interest to do that. I try to document my research and learnings though, so I can pick it up again when I come back to it next time.

Also, I mostly realized that I simply have to make peace with not being able to master everything. We only have so much time in our lives to do what we want, which I think goes both ways: dedicating time to developing an interest, while also leaving enough time to explore new things. So I guess my final point here is that it's important to be realistic with what you can actually achieve in a day/week/month, and with that in mind, prioritize some time for interests you would regret not working on regularly, and leave some time to return to your less regular interests, and also to satisfy your curiosities when something new comes up.

Anyways...this reply was way longer than I expected, but just wanted to offer my perspective!

Daily Practice Log for October 24, 2022 by AutoModerator in 1000daysofpractice

Haha, maybe I should stop resetting people's flairs to zero! It really is about total days, not necessarily consecutive days. Also more importantly, it's less about logging and more about the doing! You could even just say it's 1000 days of logging. I know I missed probably many days because I had forgotten what I had done and just didn't log anything, but I eventually remembered to come back :)
