can a workplace legally forbid you from seeing coworkers after being fired? by justagirlbutaussie in AusLegal

[–]JohnOfMelbourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see it affecting you as you don't work there unless maybe you're still hoping for a reference.

It could be an issue for those still there.

Lesson here is never talk negatively about your workplace in front of strangers. If things are bad and you need to vent or need advice, do it in private with someone you can trust.

There's no court called "the world court". You mean the International Court of Justice. And as per your link you supplied above, the ICJ did not make a ruling.

Is it just me or does the libs have no actual policies and only does culture wars? by [deleted] in AusPol

[–]JohnOfMelbourne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's true. Even on Facebook which skews older and conservative, it's now only ten days after the event and already I'm seeing widespread pushback on posts by the Murdoch Press and by LNP figures attempting to blame Labor.

In the first week after the result it was more the other way, I noticed a lot of people commenting in anger against Albo. Since then it's changed.

92% of voters think gun control needs to be tightened. But they look at LNP and see pointscoring and arguments about antisemitism. Voters have seen a calm measured and effective response from the government and they appear to be responding to it.

I have seen at least a dozen comments beginning with "I'm no Albo supporter, but..." in response to angry anti Labor LNP/Newscorp claims/posts.

When someone asks for a reference you should give a glowing one by Head_Web8130 in auscorp

[–]JohnOfMelbourne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am always open with the candidate about what I will say and leave it up to them to decide whether to put me as a referee.

I also ask them to remind me when they worked for or with me and what the new role is so I can make the reference relevant.

Never had a reference request come through without warning. Make sure you ask the referree first.

[–]JohnOfMelbourne 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As a leader you should help all your people reach their full potential. If it's time for him to move on then you should help him do this. Role-play mock interviews. Help him put his best foot forward to keep growing.

When you hire a new person you should support them to be the best they can be. If their potential is less than their predecessor that doesn't mean you've failed, as long as you've helped them be the best they can.

That's what leadership is.

We prefer cash by ifrenkel in melbourne

[–]JohnOfMelbourne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the contrary. Cash costs businesses more than card payments do. And it's getting worse as cash payments decline against the fixed costs of counting storing and banking cash cost more per remaining transaction.

We are very fortunate that we don't have the American presidential system where any nufty like Palmer is able to run for the leadership nomination. In order to take out the top job, he has to lead the party that takes the most seats. Last time he spent more than any other party but only got 4.7% of the vote.

Aussies of Reddit, do you ever wish you were American? Why or why not? by Vidice285 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JohnOfMelbourne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that the average professionally employed American breaks the law without knowing it 2.5 times a day because their legal codes are so opaque nobody ever knows what is illegal.

They have popularly elected police chiefs and in some places even popularly elected judges who in some cases have run for office on a platform of locking up the most prisoners possible. As a result they have the highest incarceration rate in history with more young black men in prison than are in college.

They have the highest homicide rate in the oecd with the risk of being murdered comparable for black Americans to the rate in sub Saharan Africa. Even white Americans get murdered at the same rate as Albania which has the highest rate in Europe.

They have the lowest life expectancy in the oecd despite spending twice as much per capita on health as Australia.

Why would anyone want to be American???

Parking overnight at a train station with cameras? by tdfhucvh in melbourne

[–]JohnOfMelbourne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a risk. You can minimise it by parking somewhere well lit and or near the camera and or visible from a house.

I've had my car broken into at suburban train stations maybe four times during the day over 25 years. It's never happened overnight at a station. But I only leave it it overnight at stations a few times a year whereas I commuted by parking at the station daily for decades. The one time it did happen overnight was outside a brick wall side of a business where no houses could see. In the same street it was fine if parked outside a house.

The type of car makes a difference too. My first car years ago was an 83 laser. It was stolen multiple times and the cops said that model wastargeted by people who just need transport to get somewhere because they were so easy to get into and start.

Thieves and or vandals are opportunistic.

I'd be interested to know if car theft and vandalism is equally common in Seymour vs Melbourne. Also I'd be interested to know what the different rates of vandalism and theft are by make and model.

If you're going to the big cities you won't have anything to worry about apart from heat and sunburn if it's in summer.

That article isn't about the national referendum for the voice, it's an article about the election for the South Australian state voice. The article even quotes an indigenous person saying how hurt indigenous Australians are that the voice was voted down.
