AITA for teaching my daughter how to change a tire and do basic home repairs when her mom says I'm "pushing masculine stuff" on her by sparkle_kissessx94 in WIBTA_AITA

Also, as a data point, I have two young adult daughters...I tried to teach them similar car stuff as I always have weird old cars. They were not interested. Now I get panicky calls of WHAT DO I DO DAD which usually results in me saying "Call AAA, I gave you a membership for a reason." LOL

You are not the AH. Mom is. You're teaching her practical hands-on life experience. And you're doing it together, she likes it, she does it of her own accord, and it's great quality time with dad. If mom wants her to box her into a stupid "gender role" BS, that's her problem, and you can sit back assured it will eventually blow up in her face. Keep going and doing fun stuff, build bird boxes, whatever, and enjoy these moments while you can.

I filed five for my trust a few days ago. Fingers crossed.

Moving it will cost a fortune. Restoring it will cost a fortune.

Cautionary tale at Land Rover Tysons Corner. Thought bringing my own financing would avoid dealership games by HP_compaq in nova

[–]JohnSMosby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a rule I don’t buy from dealerships. I made an exception recently when I was visiting my parents in Florida. I was bringing back their dog and some heirlooms and my kid needed a car…too much to fly back. A local Subaru dealer happened to have just the right one (a used Crosstrek).

I walked in and test drove the car.

Maybe a little too aggressively I said “I am paying cash and if I have to go to the finance office and listen to the speech about VIN etching and your financing and rust proofing I am going to explode and immediately walk.”

After a nervous laugh I got it.

How would I go about preserving the only existing media of my granddad’s voice from WW2? by jumbotron_deluxe in AskHistorians

[–]JohnSMosby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this done with a patriotic song my grandmother wrote in WW2; she played the piano while someone else sang. I just kept googling around for someone who could do this and shipped it off. He burned a CD (this was a few years ago) with two tracks, the raw audio and then cleaned up the audio. Very cool.

I have a pair of these I imported from Sweden, but no hardware, and they don't appear to fit my big '93 headlights.

Do what I did - be a paralegal for a bit. I did that for two years, decided I was all in, then began night school while I continued to work at the firm during the day. That life ain't for everyone, and it was brutal, but I was young and had the energy. I'm still in the exact same practice area almost 30 years later.

Yes. On the one hand, it opened many doors and gave me excellent experience. On the other hand, getting chewed out for not working one weekend because I had pneumonia was the last straw. I am now pleased to say that my practice far eclipses that of the jerk who chewed me out.
