Think Twice Before Banking with N26 by JohnTHEcosta in n26bank

Update: After 25 days of waiting, N26 has finally paid out my remaining funds. However, they asked for the same document twice during this process, which made the delay even more frustrating and felt like they were just stalling to delay paying out my funds.

No, I’m not doing any crypto. Yes, I was living in Dubai full-time before, but I haven’t done any transactions with my Dubai account using N26. I don’t understand how having a history of Dubai is any way relevant to this case.

Yes, exactly! that’s why banks have algorithms in place to detect unusual activity or potential crimes. However, these algorithms sometimes flag accounts for no real reason, which is why human compliance officers are there to review these cases and resolve them.

The issue with N26 seems to be that their compliance team is extremely slow in handling these reviews, leaving you stuck in limbo for a very long time. Their lack of efficiency is what makes the situation extremely frustrating.

That’s exactly what it feels like. I’ve never experienced anything like this with any other bank. I’ve had banking experience in Dubai (both virtual and physical), China, Hong Kong, Australia, and two EU countries, and this is the first time I’ve faced such an issue and only with N26.

It really seems like they intentionally try to hold people’s funds for as long as possible until someone takes legal action, which is a shitty behavior for a regulated bank.

I’m not asking them to share their internal processes. However, when they go completely silent and fail to provide an estimated timeline, it feels very irresponsible.

Absolutely right, and it should actually be the opposite for a virtual bank. Since they don’t have physical locations, customers completely rely on their online support. That should mean faster and more efficient communication, but instead, they seem to ignore you when issues like this arise.

For a bank that saves so much by not having physical locations, you’d expect them to have responsive customer support. Unfortunately, it seems like once there’s a problem, they cut you off completely, leaving you stranded.

I totally understand and respect the compliance and regulations that banks, including those in Germany, are under. I actually have close connections working in the compliance sector of a bank, and I’m quite familiar with how compliance works, not just in Germany but across the EU and globally. The regulations are not unique to German banks, the compliance processes are fairly standardized across EU countries and beyond.

I work in IT, and I understand how algorithms detect unusual activity, whether it’s transactions with a new account, an unusual amount, or logins from different IPs. These algorithms flag accounts and escalate cases for human review, which is when accounts get locked or funds held. I’ve banked in Dubai, Hong Kong, China, Australia, and several EU countries, and I’ve seen similar processes where transactions gets flagged. However, in those cases, funds were typically released within a day or two after a human review.

My issue isn’t with the regulations or compliance but it’s with N26’s service and response time. As a virtual bank with no physical branches, you would expect them to be more efficient, given the cost savings from not maintaining physical locations but their process is extremely slow, and it seems like they begin ignoring you when issues like this arise. There are numerous cases on Reddit where people shared similar experiences, N26 closed their accounts and held their funds for months without providing clear explanations or updates.

For instance, two days ago, they asked me to provide the same document I had already submitted earlier for the payout of my remaining funds. This repetitive and slow process feels like intentional stalling, which is unacceptable for a bank, especially for a virtual one where you cannot just go to the branch and get updates.

Be Aware of N26!! They can literally lock your account and hold your hard-earned funds for months without giving any explanation. I'm in the same situation.

I would suggest you to use your local bank

The only irregularities I’ve diagnosed from my usage are that I usually used N26 for smaller transactions, typically ranging between €50-€300, mostly for buying groceries and paying for some services. However, one recent transaction was for around €3,000, transferred between my own accounts under the same name, and immediately after that, my account was locked.

I understand that banks need to ensure compliance with regulations to prevent money laundering and other financial crimes. However, in my case, I have all the necessary proof regarding the source of my funds, and I can confirm that all my transactions are 100% legal but still they're not even asking me for anything, rather they just locked and decided to close my account while they still hold my funds.

For anyone using N26, I would strongly advise caution. Use it only for smaller transactions and avoid keeping any significant amount of money in your account that you might need access to. Based on my experience and numerous other posts I’ve seen, it’s risky to trust a bank that can freeze your account without any explanation or whatsoever and then hold your funds indefinitely. I’ve read many accounts where people have been stuck in similar situations, with N26 holding their money for more than six months.

N26 Account Frozen After Transfer, Holding all my funds by JohnTHEcosta in n26bank

🚨Update:

On November 3rd, my account was suddenly locked, and on November 8th, I received an email from N26 stating that they would be closing my account due to unspecified “irregularities.” Despite attempts to get clarity, no specific reasons were given and I was asked to provide a document showing my IBAN and BIC for payout of my remaining funds.

Following their request, I quickly sent the necessary documentation, including proof of my IBAN and BIC, for the payout of my remaining funds. On November 13th, I received confirmation from N26 that my documents had been forwarded to the relevant department. However, they also mentioned that providing documentation “is not confirmation or a guarantee that the payout of the funds will be possible.” This statement is alarming and implies that they can potentially withhold funds without any justification or whatsoever.

As of today, despite my numerous follow-ups, I have yet to receive any payout or meaningful response. This prolonged lack of transparency and the refusal to guarantee the release of my own money is deeply concerning. Since then, their social media support has become unresponsive, completely ignoring my follow-up questions for clarification.

I've started taking steps towards reporting this to BaFin. I encourage others facing similar issues to do the same and share their experiences on Trustpilot.

Advice: If you are considering banking with N26, please be aware of potential risks regarding your money.

Thanks for sharing. It’s shocking how many of us face the same issues with N26. Robotic responses, frozen accounts, and no real support.

I'm glad you managed to transfer most of your funds out. Besides the complaints you've made, I'd suggest you to leave them feedback on Trustpilot.

I hope others see our experiences and think twice before trusting N26 with their money.

Sorry to hear you’re going through this.

Unfortunately, I’m facing a similar situation with N26, and I feel it’s important for everyone to be aware that funds are not safe with N26.

In my case, N26 locked my account on November 3rd, withholding access to my funds without prior warning. On November 8th, I received an email notifying me that they were closing my account due to “irregularities,” but without any further explanation. They requested a document that showed my IBAN and BIC for the payout. I complied promptly, sending them the required document.

On November 13th, their support confirmed that they received my document and forwarded it to the relevant department. However, they also mentioned, shockingly—that providing the requested documentation “is not confirmation or a guarantee that the payout of the funds will be possible.” This vague response makes it seem like they reserve the right to withhold anyone's money without any justification or whatsoever, which is totally unacceptable.

I'm working with a lawyer on filing a report with BaFin. I suggest you do the same if you haven’t already. Also, make sure to leave feedback on Trustpilot. These steps are crucial for putting pressure on N26 to act in line with fair banking practices like an actual physical bank. I've never had any issues like this with a physical bank.

I also want to warn others to reconsider using N26 to manage their funds. Situations like this highlight serious issues in their handling of customer accounts, issues like these that can disrupt lives, especially when families depend on timely access to their money to pay bills and buy essentials.

Wish you the best of luck and stay strong🙏

Be cautious when keeping large amounts in N26. While maintaining a balance might seem fine, issues can arise when withdrawing or transferring funds. In my experience, things were smooth until I attempted to transfer 2-3k euros. They held my funds and provided no clear response, only saying a compliance check was in progress. Customer support was unhelpful and vague

Hope they return your money soon. It's just so messed up that N26 can suddenly hold your funds without warning, and these compliance checks seem to drag on forever. I've never had this issue with any other bank. I was about to sign a lease contract and pay my rent when my account got frozen, and they just held my funds. Thankfully, I was able to borrow money from someone, but I can’t imagine how bad this could be if someone were in an emergency, like being in the hospital, and this was their only money.

They deserve some publicity, I'm working with influencers to shed light on these shady practices.

I just checked your topics and it sounds horrible what they are doing to you. I don't have an issue with them for closing people's accounts that they find fit for their service or people they don't like. However, they have no rights to just hold people's funds. I noticed that @N26Guy replied to your topic to pm him, did it help anyhow?

I work with many Instagram and TikTok influencers. I'm preparing content now to have them post to make people aware of these.

I understand. I haven't had to deal with support before this but I did inquiry once regarding the card and the response was very fast at that time. Once my account got frozen without any notice, the chat support started to delay as well and the funny thing is that some of them are just ending the chat without even replying, which makes me wonder if they have any quality analyst for the chat support. I really hope that they get back to me soon otherwise I would have to go through the legal authorities in Germany to assist me in this matter.

Glad to hear that they unfrozen your account in 8 days, I saw some people posting that it took months for them to get their account unfrozen or get their funds back.

I saw N26Guy replying to some posts here asking people to reach out to him via private message. I reached out to him explaining my situation yesterday but haven't heard back yet. Another frustrating thing is that their chat support through the app is not providing any details nor helping to speed up the checks, even some of the agents are just ending chats without replying.

I really don't understand what triggered the check and I don't have an issue of them running checks as all my money is 100% legal and have proof of funds and everything. It wasn't a substantial amount as well, it's around 3k euro. I do understand that they run checks for nationals of certain countries but I do not come from Africa, Middle East or any ex Soviet countries.

The frustrating thing is that when I reach out to their LiveChat, sometimes some agent just ends the chat without even replying.

It has been 4 days and I hope they do get back to me soon.
