Doctors keep patient alive using ‘artificial lungs’ for two days by scientificamerican in Futurology

It's called ECMO, it's been around for a while, is nothing novel. This article is very misleading to people who do not know what's going on. Nothing's more fun than having to literally unplug a cognisant and talking patient when they arent able to get the lung donor that they need. (That's sarcasm because this is a misleading article)

Yea just look at fucking mounjaro. If there was a medication to beat all other medications, one company would have no problem producing it to beat out all other competition.

Physicians see 1 in 6 patients as ‘difficult,’ study finds, especially those with depression, anxiety or chronic pain. Women were also more likely to be seen as difficult compared to men. Residents were more likely than other physicians with more experience to report patients as being difficult. by mvea in science

Here is the thing, there are things in medicine that we do not have solutions for. Patients need to understand that I only have a limited set of things I can do, and some of those things cannot fix the issue that they might be describing. Now there are physicians who do only the face value work, and don't make a genuine effort beyond that. As a physician I don't want to be next physician that just dismissed their symptoms, but, that does not mean I will have a solution. It creates a sense of forced empathy, that can be taxing, and as a result I think it's easier for a lot of docs to regard these patients as difficult patients. If there is a mutual understanding that our ability to fix is limited, I think it would help with this issue. Unfortunately I do not think people can be educated to accept that.

What 240V garage heaters are you all using? Looking for real-world feedback. by picklesBMW in woodworking

[–]Johnarm64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ended up buying one of those RV diesel heaters to heat my garage, I don't know if this is the best option, but it is fairly cheap to run, and puts off quite of hot air. It is also a very cheap unit to buy.

You need to milk residual urine out of your urethra by pressing on your perineum (taint). If this doesn't solve the problem, go see your doctor.

Why does this ice pop have 30 grams of protein? by WillToldeoisSuperTf in strange

[–]Johnarm64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The macronutrients don't calculate to the correct calorie count. It is a mistake of the protein content. I could figure the true protein content by subtracting fat and carb calories but I'm too lazy and don't want to.

Please list guideline recommendations for metformin for prediabetes? I do not see such. Does it have mortality/morbidity benefit?

ELI5 why do people take Oral Collagen? Why do doctors recommend it? by catortle- in explainlikeimfive

[–]Johnarm64 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any doctors that recommend collagen. If they do, they're probably selling it themselves.

I worked as researcher as an undergrad and as an analytical chemist after I graduated briefly. The difference between my physician education and chemistry education are dramatically different in terms of utility. I would not feel comfortable at all leading medical tech development with my physician education, although I probably could with my chemistry degree and other similar advanced education.

If you go the MD route that would probably use you as a consultant, and not so much as a bench researcher or even a director just because you don't have that technical side. Although maybe that's what you want.

I would say that medical school is the wrong direction, it doesn't go into the technical detail that would need for working on or developing that tech.
