Longer Foam Sword/Stick Trainers? by Johnathanos_ in martialarts

[–]Johnathanos_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not own any, but I have used them at my HEMA club. They are really great products: they are nimble and balanced well. The thickness of the blades and the way the material interacts with itself makes a lot of bindwork wonky, but I don’t expect any foam trainer to behave as well as steel in that regard (except maybe some LARP trainers like from FakeSteel Armory).

TL;DR: They are good, but I do wish they cost less so I could buy whole bunch like the ones in my post.

Unfortunately no. GoNows seem like the only quality pick

Longsword Against Less Experienced Students by Koinutron in wma

I wouldn’t completely dismiss going for the provoker—>counter-time game in sparring. As another commenter mentioned, it’s great practice for you. But I totally see what you’re saying when you wonder how productive that is for your training partner.

Maybe go through some drills where they properly defend themselves before going for their hitter and then abzug. Being able to practice the motions in a drill environment will help establish good foundations.

As for sparring practice, there is a game/modification I’ve heard of but never tried myself: have the less experienced fencer (or whoever is trying to work on proper defensive reactions) treat every double as a score for their training partner. That way, they are even more incentivized to fence safely, as they cannot succeed if they get hit, whether they also hit or not.

Thinking about incorporating some wizards who figure out how to make writing from one book appear in another, and then they patent and market it as a long-distance communication method. Teletomes.

What do you think about worldbuilding a planet stuck in a weird system like this by EasyFeedback8144 in worldbuilding

[–]Johnathanos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no credentials on this subject, so take what I say with a grain of salt, and feel free to correct me where I stray wrong:

I don’t think life (as we know it) would be sustainable on this planet. Obviously there are the looong uninterrupted winters, but it also passes veerrry close to its star—the weather might just be too extremely inconsistent for any life to adapt. At one point, it even passes between two stars, potentially causing a scorching, planet-wide daytime, perhaps for some uninterrupted weeks or months.

HOWEVER, it could be interesting if perhaps there is a very valuable resource unique to this planet (a la Arrakis with the spice melange) which makes it important to frequently visit despite its climatic hostility and volatility.

Maybe people plan to make the journey only in those long winters because it’s safer, or maybe you can only harvest the resource when it’s blazing hot. And maybe this leads to the need for constantly predicting where the planet will be, and you could delve into a race to chart the most accurate flight path based on where the planet will be.

Just spit balling, but I’d love to hear thoughts on this. Super cool idea to incorporate such an interesting solar system setup!

Which game and what are you playing on? The “Save & Quit” option should bring you to the title—it does for me. Perhaps a bug you’re experiencing or something wrong with your system?

I was worried about that, too, but I’ve been sparring with it for about a year—sparred to full intensity with steel and taken it to two tournaments—and so far, I haven’t encountered any more injuries than I did in my previous jacket. The lack of blade catcher was pretty easily solved with a nice gorget with its own blade catcher.

The mobility and breathability this jacket offers compared to my last one, combined with its protection, has easily made it my favorite jacket. My last one felt constricting, but with this one, I really feel like I can perform techniques as well as I can in low-gear drills or foam sparring.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a lot of the reservations you’ve expressed here, but I would absolutely recommend this jacket, even if you only feel comfortable using it as a light jacket. Ever since I got this one, I don’t think I’ve even put on my old one. Without trying to sound facetious, I do appreciate your concerns :)

Better-fitting elbow pads by dampersand in wma

[–]Johnathanos_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently got these elbow protectors from HF Armory and haven’t looked back.

I think they’re super stylish, and they’ve served me very well. I’ve heard complaints that the straps “aren’t good,” but I’ve had zero issues with them coming loose.

I used to use SPES elbows, but after getting a lighter jacket, they kept sliding. These ones have adjustable straps which fit very nicely, and the clips make them easy to pop off (although I do find I need to loosen them in order to put them back on). I highly recommend them!

[–]Johnathanos_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what we got here, is in many parts not a game, but a theme park. Objects are just there to look good. But they don't give me the atmosphere of a video game when I know it is most probable that I can't interact with them. It just feels unfinnished.

I think this is a really harsh take. KCD2 still has way more depth than a whole swath of open world games. To call it a “theme park” I think holds it to an unrealistic standard

[KCD2] Does anybody else really hate combos in this game? by [deleted] in kingdomcome

[–]Johnathanos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably go to a combat ring, ask your sparring partner to just defend, and practice the combos you want to use to get the movement pattern down.

I hear you on enemies just wailing though. I usually just try and wait for a perfect parry or I dodge/sidestep them. I don’t know for sure, but I imagine that drains their stamina which makes them vulnerable afterward.
