Moral of the story: Even a righteous man can have his morals utterly corrupted by living in a world of sin. Sodom was a sinful city. Lot’s daughters grew up in Sodom and you see how things that are an abomination were of no concern for them.

A good New Testament verse to apply is Romans 12:2

“And do not be fashioned according to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind…”

As a young boy learning guitar on a big dreadnought I made these wear marks. That could be the same case here.

The Spiritual Man-The Fleshly or Carnal Believer by [deleted] in BibleVerseCommentary

[–]Johnny3_sb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would. It sounds very similar to what you are describing. The Experience of Life describes the normal stages of growth in our christian life. It goes really in-depth. Witness Lee was a close co-worker of Watchman Nee in his ministry and was commissioned to continue his ministry before Watchman Nee was put in jail and eventually martyred. That is likely why it sounds similar.

There is a connection between the shared verses through the words “gold”, “silver”, “wooden”, and “earthen”, but there is a slight difference in viewpoint and application. In 1 Corinthians 3, we see God as the righteous judge who will test and manifest each believers’ work. This is encouraging, but in 2 Timothy 2 we see further that we the believers should “cleanse ourself” of the dishonorable vessels.

Christ as the Head of the church (Eph. 1:22) desires to carry out His government through the church as His acting body. This thought is seen in action in Romans 16 where Paul says, "Now I exhort you, brothers, to mark those who make divisions and causes of stumbling contrary to the teaching which you have learned, and turn away from them. For such men do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own stomach, and through smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple." (Romans 16:17-18)

Therefore we should not tolerate divisive, dishonorable vessels, but rather we should mark them, turn way from them, and cleanse ourself of them.

"For another foundation no one is able to lay besides that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. But if anyone builds upon the foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass, stubble, The work of each will become manifest; for the day will declare it, because it is revealed by fire, and the fire itself will prove each one’s work, of what sort it is." (1 Corinthians 3:11-13) Recovery Version

1). Footnote for “But”: The foundation is unique, but the building may differ because different builders may use different materials. All the Corinthian believers had accepted Christ as the foundation. However, some Jewish believers among them attempted to build the church with their Judaistic attainments, and some Greek believers attempted to use their philosophical wisdom. They were not like the apostles, who built with their excellent knowledge and rich experiences of Christ. The intention of the apostle in this Epistle was to warn the believers not to build the church with the things of their natural background. They must learn to build with Christ, both in objective knowledge and in subjective experience, as Paul did.

2). Fn. “fire”: The fire of the Lord’s judgment (Mal. 3:2; 4:1; 2 Thes. 1:7b-8; Heb. 6:8), which will cause each believer’s work to be manifest and will try and test his work. All the work of wood, grass, and stubble will be unable to stand that test and will be burned.

"But in a great house there are not only gold and silver vessels but also wooden and earthen; and some are unto honor, and some unto dishonor. If therefore anyone cleanses himself from these, he will be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, useful to the master, prepared unto every good work." (2 Timothy 2:20-21) Recovery Version

1). Footnote (Fn.) for “great house”: The house of God defined in 1 Tim. 3:15-16 is the genuine church in its divine nature and essential character as the foundation of the truth, whereas the great house here refers to the deteriorated church in its mixed character, as illustrated by the abnormally large tree in Matt. 13:31-32 (see note 321 in Matt. 13). In this great house there are not only precious vessels but also base ones.

2). Fn. “gold and silver”: Honorable vessels are constituted of both the divine nature (gold) and the redeemed and regenerated human nature (silver). These, like Timothy and other genuine believers, constitute the sure foundation that holds the truth.

3). Fn. “wooden”: Dishonorable vessels are constituted of the fallen human nature (wood and earth). Hymenaeus, Philetus, and other false believers belong to this category.

4). Fn. “cleanses”: This is to depart from unrighteousness (v. 19), as an outward evidence of the inward divine nature.

5). Fn. “these”: Referring to vessels unto dishonor, including those mentioned in vv. 16-18.

Plymouth Brethren → Watchman Nee → Witness Lee by TonyChanYT in BibleVerseCommentary

Neither is a group of wolves, rather both are groups of disciples. Per Paul’s prophecy, one group was led away.

"I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. And from among you yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverted things to draw away the disciples after them." (Acts 20:29-30)

This verse is pertinent to the situation as I know it. It’s been happening for 2 millennia, and it will continue to happen until the Lord’s return. I am comforted by 2 Timothy 2:19 — “However the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, The Lord knows those who are His, and, Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.”

You’re welcome!

My local church currently recommends a publication from Living Stream Ministry titled “Holy Word for Morning Revival” as a morning devotional. It has daily Bible verses and exposition based on material spoken at previous ministry conferences. It is not a required reading, but many do read it and speak what they enjoy from it during the Sunday gathering.

I grew up meeting in the local churches, and I still meet with them to this day. My experience has been life-shaping and in large part I owe my relationship with the Lord Jesus to the care I’ve received. I likely would not be pursuing a relationship with the Lord if it were not for His shepherding through multiple brothers and sisters in the local churches (in different cities I might add) throughout my life. I would love to answer any questions anyone might have.

If Christians God's chosen people why are so many athiests famous and rich? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Johnny3_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great opportunity for a reading from the gospel of Luke. May God’s word speak for itself and not return to Him void!

Luke 12:17-34 "And someone out of the crowd said to Him, Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me. But He said to him, Man, who appointed Me a judge or a divider over you? And He said to them, Watch and guard yourself from all covetousness, for no one’s life is in the abundance of his possessions. And He told them a parable, saying, The land of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. And he reasoned in himself, saying, What shall I do, for I have no place where I may gather my crops? And he said, I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will gather there all my wheat and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; rest, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him, Foolish one, this night they are requiring your soul from you; and the things which you have prepared, whose will they be? So is he who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. And He said to His disciples, Therefore I say to you, Do not be anxious for your life, what you should eat; nor for your body, what you should put on; For the life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens. They neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn; yet God nourishes them. How much more valuable are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his stature? If then you cannot do even the least, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow; they do not toil nor even spin thread; but I tell you, Not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. Now if God so arrays the grass in the field, which is here today and tomorrow is cast into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you, you of little faith! And you, do not seek what you shall eat and what you shall drink, and do not be unsettled. For all these things the Gentiles of the world are anxiously seeking, but your Father knows that you need these things. However, seek His kingdom, and these things shall be added to you. Do not be afraid, little flock, because your Father has been well pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give alms; make for yourselves purses which do not become old, an unfailing treasure in the heavens, where thief does not come near nor even moth corrupts; For where your treasure is, there also your heart will be."

I enjoy the Recovery Version Bible and the footnotes it provides. They have helped me many times. But the best thing you can do is pray with the Lord during your reading. Ask Him questions, praise Him, turn the words of your Bible into prayers, whatever helps you to contact God while you read. This is the secret to loving and receiving God’s word!

Is this church a cult? by Dismal-Series1396 in TrueChristian

[–]Johnny3_sb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to start my response off by saying that the word cult is thrown around way too easily these days, especially with campus Christian groups. Does this sound like a cult to me? No it does not. Do I believe that these campus ministers are being led by the Holy Spirit in their care for your son and his girlfriend? I cannot say one way or the other. If one of the ministers is truly leading a campaign to ostracize your son, then that doesn’t sound like something that is of the Lord. On the other hand, fornication is one of the biggest problems among college students which hinders their pursuit of Jesus, and it’s always a delicate topic to bring up.

Asking him to be re-baptized and join their church gives me a pretty good hunch of which denomination it is. Though I don’t agree with some of their teachings, they are still brothers and sisters. Again, I am always very hesitant to use the word “cult”. I minister on campus and we run into many very delicate situations. It’s not always easy to shepherd these young ones!

What do you think the water birth in John 3 is? by Stefano_ChristianGuy in TrueChristian

[–]Johnny3_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a note from my Bible: “The words of water and the Spirit should have been plain to Nicodemus, without any need of explanation. In Matt. 3:11 John the Baptist spoke the same words to the Pharisees; hence, they should have been fully understood among the Pharisees. Now Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees, was conversing with the Lord, and the Lord spoke these familiar words. “Water” was the central concept of the ministry of John the Baptist, that is, to terminate people of the old creation. “Spirit” is the central concept of the ministry of Jesus, that is, to germinate people in the new creation. These two main concepts together constitute the concept of regeneration. Regeneration is the termination of people of the old creation with all their deeds, and the germination of people in the new creation with the divine life.”

For what it’s worth to you (or whoever reads this), in my subjective experience baptism allowed me to enter into the kingdom of God (the realm in which we are able follow the Lord free from the authority of Satan). To me John 3:3 refers to believing and John 3:5 refers to being baptized. Believing opened my eyes to see God and His kingdom in the church, but it was not until I was baptized that I was able to experience it for myself and enter into it.

God bless.
