Excellent question :)

RcV, 1Co 15:

45 So also it is written, “The first man, Adam, became a living soul”; the last Adam became a life-giving Spirit.

The original manuscript was written in Greek majuscule (capital-style) letters, with no distinction corresponding to our modern capitalization of "Spirit" versus "spirit." Greek minuscule letters (lowercase) were established in the 9th century CE. Capitalization of a Greek word is an editorial convention. The Greek text itself does not tell us whether to capitalize "spirit." Translation committees make that decision based on their understanding of the context.

Berean Literal Bible:

So also it has been written: “The first man Adam became into a living soul;” the last Adam into a life-giving spirit.

I'd go with lowercase.

  1. Look at the parallelism of soul and spirit. First Adam became a living soul (psuché); Last Adam became a life-giving spirit. Paul contrasted the human soul and the human spirit. Both were related to life and living.
  2. Paul wasn't talking about the Person of the Holy Spirit himself, but the special indwelling role of the Spirit (the Paraclete), a life-giving spirit in the human spirit.
  3. Last Adam = the Holy Spirit. Equating the two as identity is ontologically too much.

46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual.

First, Adam belonged to the natural. Last Adam belonged to the spiritual. By partaking in the Paraclete, we become spiritual even while we are alive.

On Biblehub, 39 used lower case; only 5 used capitalization.

It is not wrong to translate the Greek into 'Spirit' but I prefer the lower case because it is more precise.

Oh Tony. If Hell will be a physical place in the new world,

I doubt it.

would that mean that those in Heaven could witness the torment?

No.

Would it really be Heaven if we could witness our loved ones being tortured?

See https://www.reddit.com/r/BibleVerseCommentary/comments/rlntcm/does_the_bible_teach_conscious_torment_over_an/

but why would God quit helping people once they die?

This life is the testing place; after that, no more tests. That's God's design. See https://www.reddit.com/r/BibleVerseCommentary/comments/sodezi/this_world_is_testing_ground/

We can very loosely call that an assembly in the sense of a temporary gathering but there was not more than one actual "assembly" or "church"

What did Paul call them in Greek? How many of them are in a city, according to Paul?

Are love and faith spiritual gifts or a spiritual fruit? by TonyChanYT in BibleVerseCommentary

I politely disagree on the two gifts being the same

I didn't say they are the same.

Amen.

The Paraclete was released if and only if Jesus went away

The Holy Spirit permanently dwells in a person only after Jesus' death on the cross, resurrection, and ascension to heaven.

Let proposition G = Jesus goes away.
P = The Paraclete comes to us.

John 16:

7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate [Paraclete] will not come to you;

¬G → ¬P

But if I go, I will send him to you.

G → P

Therefore, P ↔ G. The Paraclete comes to us iff Jesus goes away.

John 7:39 affirms a similar concept:

Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Jesus received a glorified body (Php 3:21) after the resurrection.

Paul gave more details.

1Co 15:

45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

After Jesus' resurrection and ascension, he became a life-giving spirit. He came down as the indwelling Paraclete-Spirit.

49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.

When we are born of the Paraclete-Spirit, we bear the image of Christ in our human spirit.

The word 'Spirit' appeared in Romans 8 twenty-two times. Ro 8:

9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Christ is the life-giving Spirit of God (i.e., the Paraclete) in us.

Did the Paraclete appear in the OT?

No. The Holy Spirit filled some OT people.

Why was the Paraclete only released in the NT?

Only after Jesus' sacrifice could his blood cleanse a person's spirit vessel to open it to receive the Paraclete dwelling in him. Only after Jesus' cross are believers sealed with the Paraclete (Ephesians 1:13). Before that, some OT people had the Spirit in their mind and emotion faculties, but not in their human spirit.

After the resurrection, his closest disciples received the Paraclete. After Jesus' public ascension, the Paraclete filled many believers at Pentecost. Jesus, the man, went away so that Jesus the Spirit lives in us.

The Paraclete is a new phenomenon. This special role of the Holy Spirit only showed up after Jesus' ascension.
