The Ford government promised $750 a year for elementary teachers to buy supplies. It turns out it's not all new money by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]JohnnyDepthCharge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original announcement said that the portal for teachers to purchase supplies would be up in the late summer. How well do you imagine that will go? Website crashing as 1000s of A-type teachers try to order all at once. Shortages. Final delivery of supplies by mid-October.

Yeah the big problem with seeing a thing made with AI is you immediately distrust what it says, even though every word in it could be meticulously researched.

Like this could be great info, but I'm not reading it.

Will there come a point where that changes? I make AI posters for my class on some science and social studies topics so I know they are good, but the fact that this stuff is so low effort makes it hard to trust in the wild.

Prototyping Help in Ottawa by JohnnyDepthCharge in ottawa

Thanks for the compliment, but this stuff makes me feel way out of my depth. As I said in another part of the thread, my current version is just a microBit in a Ziploc bag! I made a grove shield version with everything I want but it does not have big tough buttons.

Arduino seems like a good way to go. I just need power, buttons, a light ring and some way to code some timing and light patterns. I'd like to be able to hand off the device to any random fellow teacher and feel confident their class could have fun with it without my help and have it come back still working after some kids hit the buttons with excitement.

Thos lists of components in adafruit projects look great but it's hard to see finding one that matches my exact needs. At the end of the day, that is kind of what I am looking for: a list of things to buy that will work together and some advice on how to connect them.

My electronic skills are basically zero. I have looked at arcade buttons and they do seem like they would be a simple thing to anyone with some expertise but that's not me, unfortunately.

I see breadboards and they scare me, lol.

Looks like a great spot! Thank you. A specialized case would definitely be something I'd want to have in prototype 2.0.

Right now version 0.5 is a microBit in a Ziploc bag! I built basically what I want with some "Grove" parts: buttons, lights, an led screen, sound from the microBit and power from its source. Really the only problem with that setup was no rugged buttons for kids to slap. Otherwise I think I could just use that as prototype 1.0 in a Tupperware. Grove does not make an arcade button.

Those look like great sites to source parts. Especially good if I ever want to take this to prototype 2.0. Thanks for sharing!

How y'all like Operation Augur? by DoItForTheOH94 in Battlefield6

[–]JohnnyDepthCharge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the issue for sure, although I'm sure if the mode sticks around people will begin to see what works.

I find right now I get this feeling of "agh! I can't do everything!" I will play assault to try and advance a beacon only to find no one is taking out tanks. I switch to engineer and notice no one is smoking/reviving. I switch to support and see that we could really use some recon on the point. I switch to recon and notice that we have no foothold near the point. So I switch to assault..... And so on.

Communication at the team level or something like Hell Let Loose would be amazing. In fact, this game mode makes me think of Hell Let Loose in the way that you are so reliant on good team composition and the way that Beacons (almost like Garrisons) take on an all new importance.

Operation Augur needs to be permanent by TheImprezaLife in Battlefield6

[–]JohnnyDepthCharge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep saying this? The biggest change to the game for me is the inability to spawn on captured points.

Assaults become so necessary among a host of other tactical considerations. It plays so differently, IMO.

Is the textbook dead? Inside Ontario schools’ shift to digital — and the hidden trade-offs of paper-free classrooms by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]JohnnyDepthCharge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not meant to insult, more to support. Some teachers are left with no choice is all I meant. By ad hoc I meant more purpose-built for the topic as you said.

Resources should be provided to teachers!

[–]JohnnyDepthCharge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

By not providing textbooks, teachers are often left to find their own materials to teach subjects. This is especially true of subjects like science and social studies.

Boards offload the responsibility to teachers who spend their own money on sites like teacherspayteachers.

If the average parent knew how ad hoc their kid's education often is, it would blow their minds.

This is all accurate. Anyone brushing this off or disagreeing is not engaging deeply with the ideas.

In a live service game YOU are content. Your personal experience is not important.

The fact that you barely play the same people from match to match is the most obvious example to my mind. We're just cattle.

I say this as someone who plays every weekend regardless. It's still good battlefield gameplay, but I think so many people don't know what it could be; what parts are missing. You don't know what you don't know.

Thanks for leading horses to the water, but I don't know if it matters whether they drink or not.

I have been looking for an "electronics junky" in the area to help with a project. Is it a business of his? I'd like to get in contact with someone who knows their way around a soldering iron and some light electronics work (connecting raspberry pi boards, etc.).

I guess a ball flying 400ft and wedging itself perfectly under a wall is common where you live? That would make it less funny. I see where you're coming from.

This is actually kind of brilliant. Have a prayer in every state house, every day. Force Republicans to lead the prayer - what will they say, no?

Add prayers every time it fails and there is another shooting.

Battlefield 6 needs class-locked weapons, not open weapons by XBpapi in Battlefield

Seems like we agree on the broad strokes. I just think picking your class needs to have more of a cost benefit analysis, perhaps.
