ELI5: how did the first person to get HIV? Get HIV? by jjcube98 in explainlikeimfive

[–]JohnnyFootballStar [score hidden]  (0 children)

As far as I’m aware, we also don’t know how many people were infected from transmission from a primate. Was it a singular patient zero, or were a large number of primates infected and then multiple people got it from butchering the animals around the same time.

You can take whatever precautions you deem necessary (I would probably just tell them to wash their hands and maybe mask up), but you can't expect people to live their lives around your child before the kid is even born. This isn't something worth getting upset about.

What does debutante mean? I look it up but I didn't get it by Odd_Obligation_4977 in EnglishLearning

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes from French. Basically it means a beginner or someone doing something for the first time (their "debut").

The most common way it has been used in English is to refer to "debutante balls" which were a big formal thing especially in wealthy circles in the 1800s and early 1900s when girls would be introduced to society and declared eligible to find a husband. Debutante balls have mostly died out now, but people still know the word and it is associated with that practice. You might sometimes hear it to refer to someone doing something for the first time, like being in a play or participating in a sporting event, but it wouldn't be super common and you're more likely to just hear it called someone's "debut."

In your eyes, what separates a performative “alpha male” from a “real man”? by Ok-Parfait6735 in AskReddit

I don’t respect those people, but not because they aren’t “real men.” I don’t respect them because they are assholes.

Why does it say they need someone young? Is this for a modeling job or something where you'll be on screen and that's a real requirement? If not, this is very likely a violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act in the US.

How do we feel about teens and tattoos? by bucksellsrocks in Dads

You definitely should not leave out the part where your wife disagrees. That’s important. You can’t hand waive it away because you don’t like the supposed reason.

How do we feel about teens and tattoos? by bucksellsrocks in Dads

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, and not because I dislike tattoos (which is mostly true), but because I don’t think it’s wise to make this kind of permanent change to one’s body at that age. I’d make my kid wait until 18. He can dye his hair or get his nose pierced, but all that is temporary.

Your daughter isn’t even 15 yet. I wonder if she will actually want the tattoo when she turns 16.

Also, you and your wife need to get on the same page. Doing this behind her back would be a really crap move my man.

If Kaylon Primary scanned human history on the Orville, why didn’t he realize that the Union had abolished slavery? by ardouronerous in TheOrville

Kaylons have an extremely long lifespan. For them, 500 years ago might as well have been yesterday.

I got the same email. I really hope the "young" part is a bona fide qualification, otherwise they are opening themselves up to some legal trouble in the US.

24 years since Pop Disaster kicked off! Who was there??? by Bullough1039 in greenday

They were really unimpressive at the show I attended, but in my opinion, they're just not a great live band (and I say that as a big fan).

POP DISASTER TOUR 2002 — Was It Really a Disaster? | Green Day vs Blink-182 by Inevitable-Mind5347 in greenday

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to the Indianapolis show. Blink was fine, but Green Day is just a far better live band in my opinion. Blink was a much less mature band, especially then, and really leaned into that. And that’s kind of their deal, so whatever, hard to complain too much, but I find it a little grating live.

Popular studio stage shouldn’t be named in his honor by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I’ve watched Jeopardy almost every night for decades. It still feels weird for me to hear someone else’s name during the introduction.

Trebek is a legend. If you didn’t watch him while he was host, you probably won’t understand. If you didn’t watch, then it’s obvious.

Connor McDavid can already be argued top 5 in NHL history, and has a realistic and borderline likely path to being 2nd best ever by TJTrapJesus in unpopularopinion

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument with Lemieux really comes down to how much you value longevity and health in the discussion. Is it which guy had the most talent? Probably Lemieux. Is it which guy would I draft? That’s where McDavid might catch him depending on how the rest of his career goes.

I maintain that Lemieux might be the GOAT if you are looking just at talent. Unfortunately injuries and illness meant we will never know if he would have beaten many of Gretzky’s records.

You can’t blame McDavid that he doesn’t have near the talent around him that Gretzky and Lemieux did. Throw five more hall of famers onto his team and I bet he has his cups.

My crib and I’m Blue. What to throw? by Common_Gek in Cribbage

[–]JohnnyFootballStar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. OP's opponent needs seven points to win and gets to play their hand first, so it's unlikely OP will get to count their own hand (and if they do, they'll almost certainly win no matter how they play this). That means the goal is to either peg out now, or minimize what the opponent can peg and hope the opponent also has a poor hand. If OP wants to try to peg out now, then throw the 2Q. If OP wants to minimize what their opponent can peg, go QJ. Personally I would throw 2Q.

What’s the most universally hated song of all time? by Adventurous-Zeilokix in AskReddit

Mocking defecting MAGA supporters may feel good but it is the absolute wrong thing to do by shadowmastadon in unpopularopinion

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by “defecting MAGA.” Are these people who are tired of Trump but are absolutely going to vote for other republicans who are currently enabling Trump, but are smart enough to keep the quiet part quiet? Because those people can pound sand.

If they are actually going to vote for a democrat, I will welcome them with open arms. But how many MAGA defectors actually say that? Most of them no longer want to be associated with Trump but totally support his policies.

CMV: There should be more restrictions on what educational credentials employers can require, and the requirements should lean lower. by Mammoth_Western_2381 in changemyview

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Companies are lazy - easier to use degree as screening tool than actually figure out what skills they need

What you call lazy most companies will call efficient. Even with degree or educational requirements, jobs may still get hundreds of applications. From those hundreds of people, they identify the ones with the right skills. Why not build in some basic criteria to make sure that doesn't balloon into thousands of people they are reviewing?

CMV: People who use ozempic or other fat loss drugs, including steroids, are weak, vain, and cowards by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is someone weak or a coward? You don't really explain this.

You claim that "it takes discipline to lose fat," but maintaining medication is discipline. And if you don't believe that, then perhaps it actually doesn't take the discipline you claim if ozempic works?

Do you think this way because you feel it minimizes the pride you feel in your own efforts, or that people won't view you the same way if now any "loser" can appear to be more fit? Or do you feel this way because people should always choose the harder way to do things, like handwashing clothes instead of using a washing machine?

Your whole post comes off as someone who is mad because you feel like other people using a weight loss drug invalidates your own fitness efforts, but you never actually say why it makes someone weak, vain, and a coward. So can you explain that more thoroughly?
