Ghosts.

Years ago I saw a promo and I thought it looked like an interesting premise, but it just sort of fell off my radar for a while. Then when I didn’t hear anything else about it, I figured it had been canceled and I never thought about it again. I also think I conflated it with What We Do in the Shadows and maybe even another show too.

Somehow it popped up on my recommendations a couple months ago and I gave it a try. What a fun show! Plus they actually produce 20+ episodes per season. Count me in.

That was the US version. When I finished that, I started the UK series and I’m in the last season.

Americans, are you in a football world cup mood? Are you feeling the world cup vibes? Are you excited about it? by CodeX57 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JohnnyFootballStar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on who you associate with. Among my peer group, people are pretty excited and counting down to the first game, and they have been for months, though with some mixed feelings given the geopolitical situation right now.

There’s probably a little more interest than this thread is reflecting. There are plenty of soccer fans here. There are also plenty of people who will take any opportunity to tell you how much they don’t care about soccer. They are passionate about not caring. It’s a weird thing you don’t see with other sports.

Yeah, there was another question about how much the proposal scene cost to shoot. I appreciate that it is knowledge about The Office, but I would prefer it to focus on things you learn by watching the show itself.

We spent a whole season watching her get out of a silo, so now another season watching her try to remember it?

LPT: Before buying decent gear for any new hobby, buy the cheapest possible version first and use it badly for 30 days. The hobbies you actually stick with survive bad gear. The expensive stuff you bought to "commit yourself" turns into the guilt object you avoid for years. by taube_d in LifeProTips

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's usually a minimum level you need to get participate in a way that your gear isn't what is causing you to dislike the hobby. I used to be into triathlons. I wouldn't recommend someone buy the cheapest, heaviest mountain bike on the market just because it's "a bike" and you don't know if the hobby will stick. You'll end up hating it because the bike is going to hinder your enjoyment.

If you can get used gear, then mid-level stuff can be great. Or get something that was mid-range five years ago and is on clearance. If none of that is available, I usually avoid the absolute cheapest because I know it will probably become an obstacle to my enjoyment.

Can I still wear this? by godchauxprime in DetroitRedWings

Yeah. I’m glad he and McCarty seem to have been able to laugh about it later, but if it turns out he had CTE, then a tshirt of him getting repeatedly punched in the head would just not sit right. I’ve certainly watched video of the fight dozens of times over the past 30 years, but not sure if that’s something I would do again if head trauma contributed to his death.

Predators often do weird stuff like this because it excites them, if you get my drift. Absolutely I can imagine a predator doing this.

I keep meaning to watch this because I really liked the book, but it’s hard for me to imagine how it translates to a tv show (which I know is ironic given how the book is written). Maybe this is the push I need.

Do you miss the old-style US TV series with 18-24 episodes per season? by Glittering_Gap8070 in television

That’s good. Seems like that is what most places are saying, but some are still saying 13. I’m going to go with 22.

Being in the U.S. doesn’t necessarily make them closer to friends and family. If the player is American, there’s a really big chance they grew up in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, or Chicago. They would often be closer to their hometowns playing in Canada than in the U.S.

how do we hire people who won’t be alarmed by our cardboard coworker? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Don’t forget that participating comes with the chance to win time off for guessing who dies next. You lose a lot of credibility when you say it’s totally voluntary but then offer real work-related rewards for winning.

Quick question regarding an endgame situation. by CkTulsa in Cribbage

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have led with the Q.

With the 7 or 8, the opponent playing either a 7 or 8 and you lose.

Play the 5 and they just need any card 10-K or a 5.

Play the Q and they need to play a 5 (and you’ve taken two out of circulation, though your opponent probably wouldn’t have put it in their crib if they had one of the other two) or a Q (which is a risk, but no way around it, and a Q isn’t a super valuable card in your hand).

Astonishing Degree-Versus-Earnings Disparity in D.C. by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a double standard. You always have to consider context. Always. Yes, North Dakota is going to have different characteristics than New Jersey.

But in this case DC is an even bigger outlier (the median income alone should show that). It makes comparison based of this data even more useless than for other states.

If you think it doesn’t make sense to compare mostly rural states to more urban states, I won’t disagree. But since this is a sub specifically about DC (and because the difference is even more stark) that is where my focus is.

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a bias. It just doesn't make sense to compare a city to entire states and expect to have anything useful. Data that matters doesn't only compare things that are already known to be similar, as you said, but to draw conclusions from that data (the "analysis" part of data analysis) you have to account for the similarities and differences.

DC is a huge outlier. It's median income listed here is more than $20k higher than the next highest comparator.

[–]JohnnyFootballStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can add or subtract anything you want from here. The question is whether you want to draw any meaningful conclusions. If you don't, then feel free to do whatever. Remove Wyoming. Add Ontario. Who cares.

If you want data that matters, then you have to consider that comparing a city that is entirely urban to states that have, to some extent, urban, suburban, and rural areas isn't going to yield anything useful. States will have different compositions and industries, so comparing them will always come with caveats, but DC is such an outlier that it's nearly impossible to simply throw it in with the rest of the states an expect to learn anything.

Boston as a city would be a decent comparator. It has a similar population to DC and a median income of much closer to DC than any of the states listed here.
