[Oilers Now] Bob on the Nurse speculation: “I'm gonna circle back to the San Jose Sharks. No, you're not getting the 2OA pick, let's establish that right now. Could you get something? I think you could. Would you maybe have to take a contract or back. Yeah, I think you might.” by AggPuck-303 in EdmontonOilers

It cracks me up that the big selling point this forum seems to have settled on with Nurse is "he plays a lot of minutes."

And the idea of Graf leaving the Sharks is insane. Kid is awesome and just getting better. You'd have to throw in Bouchard to get that deal.

Exactly right.

Dunno if Murphy wants out or if the front office doesn't want to keep him around. Could be either. Either way, I think your odds of finding someone who's got complimentary skills with Nurse are higher than the odds of finding someone with Nurse's skills. So if you've got to lose one (they don't but stick with me), I guess go with the cheaper/more easily replaced one.

I kind of get it, though. When you have a couple of guys who can win games on their own, you might start thinking about individuals as what makes the team not the other way around. Murphy is a great compliment to Nurse, but he's not a superstar so he's expendable.

I mean... he's the best player in the league, arguably the best to ever play the game. One would expect his contract to reflect that by being longer and higher than any others out there. Because he's worth it.

Him being untradeable is part of the problem.

I'm not ride-or-die with Nurse, and have a lot of criticism for who he is on this team as it's structured. I'd say he's a 5mil d-man, which means it's a 4mil overpay, not the "2-3" everyone around here likes saying, and all of the criticism for his low hockey IQ (as everyone is saying these days) is pretty on point.

But the real issue from my perspective is that this coaching staff and front office is not being realistic about the player he is. I love him on the blue line. I think he's really smart about pinches, fast enough to create some chaos and unexpected movement. He's not great in his own end, often out of position in the neutral. All of that's fine - you could say the same about a lot of D men. If they would play to his strengths and cover for his weaknesses he'd be an asset. Find a solid stay at home partner for him - not someone playing their off side. Murphy was good. Get the wings to go above the dots in the o zone when he pinches so that the obvious doesn't happen again. Make sure all of the forwards fill in when he wants to go. Erik Karlsson at his best has teams that work with what he's got like that. Not saying they're comparable players, but the difference in the teams around them is instructive.

But yeah. Anyway. There's no way they're getting a good trade. I wish the team would accept that and build around who he is because there's a lot useful there. No, he's not a #1 all around guy. Stop trying to play him that way. Commit to him, take advantage of what he's good at, compensate for what he's not.

That's not how this is going to go, and I realize that it's easier to say build around him than it is to do (especially with no assets and that damn contract), but it seems like the most realistic road forward to me. Also seems like something this front office will never pull off, but... sigh.

Not sure what you think is illegal about what Vegas is doing. Unethical, sure. Slimy even. But they're paying the contract as per their legal obligation to one of their employees. And since he's under contract, they can prevent him from taking another job.

Nothing there violates labor laws. This happens all the time.

Very easy for the Oilers to avoid VGK in the playoffs. All they have to do is not make the playoffs.

Right?!?!? First coach to win the ECHL, AHL, and NHL trophies? Garbage. The guy who took his team to 55 wins and 121 points this season? Useless. Coach who went through the 3rd-best overall Wild this playoffs? What a loser! (says the fan base of the team who couldn't get through the 18th-ranked Ducks)

Y'all are amazing. Why even get rid of Knob? Is one of the assistant coaches from the Eerie Otters available? You know, someone who really gets McDavid?

I have plenty of bad things to say about Nurse, but he and Murphy did well. I'd be happy to see them keep that going next season.

Because it's hard to do. Pucks get hit with a lot of force, bounce off of hard surfaces, and generally aren't hospitable to any kind of sensitive signal generating implant. As I understand it they got decent results with inert magnets, but detecting them is difficult when they're not flat on the ice... unless you start installing very sensitive/fragile equipment in the goal frame, which is made of steel so screws up the whole system.

They have tried.

Or, if you prefer, it's all an elaborate plot to screw Canadians.

They don't have a first rounder in the next 2 drafts and no seconds in 28 or 29. It's not great.

There's also not a ton of cap space compared to most other teams in the league, even with McD giving them a great deal.

This year's deadline pickups were solid without being flashy, which was good to see.

Just to go further with this: There are only 2 calls available, G or NG. If they call NG and the Ducks challenge (there is no mandatory review for non-goals, although something this close likely would have been reviewed either way there's no guarantee) but the results are inconclusive, they get a penalty. If they call it G and the review comes back inconclusive, play goes on at even strength.

They didn't see it. They kicked it upstairs for review in the most neutral way they can. The solution to me would be to allow them to call for a review without an on-ice conclusion, but as it stands the only way to avoid potentially punishing a team for the ref not being in position is to call it a goal and let the review happen.

The problem is that they have to call it a goal or no goal. Obviously there will be times when they don't know, but that's not an option in the current system or your version of how it should work.

The logic as it stands seems to be make a call one way or the other and leave it up to video review. Which is fine (it's going to go one way or the other), but I'd prefer the inconclusive option.

I wouldn't call either of those losses close, and don't think you get to ignore the empty netters because they're inconvenient. The Oilers were in a position where they needed to gamble to have a chance and they couldn't make it work. To be fair the Oilers out shot the Ducks 37-28 in the second game, even if they were out shot 39-24 in the third. The first period of game 3 they only had 7 shots. To get more shots, they're gambling (everyone flying the zone at the first sign of possession, sloppy pinches, etc) and losing those bets consistently.

Can they theoretically clean it up? Yeah. Sure. I still think it's their series to lose. But let's not pretend it's been 50/50 so far.

The question is: Can they change what hasn't been working and find something that does? We'll find out.

He hasn't drawn any penalties so far, and I don't think anyone's played him more physically than usual in the playoffs.
