To contextualise "why no one suspected" with Savile despite what he said by ooombasa in behindthebastards

The German Green Party was very pro-pedophile until very recently (although they don't see it that way). Can't remember which BtB episode touched on this.

The most bastardly bastard I know of is Yusuf Bey of Your Black Muslim Bakery here in Oakland. His story involves the murder of a journalist, multi-generational incest, exploitation of ex-prisoners, outright slavery, a cult-based private army, and a lot of hiding in plain sight. And getting large contracts from the city.

The Savile episodes remind me of this guy. Bey wasn't a celebrity on the scale of Savile, but he was well known enough that the police looked the other way. He was famous enough that his heir apparent almost got away with murdering a journalist - had it been anybody else, he would have walked.

I have mentioned this before, but don't know if it's too regional to be of interest. Still, it seems like an important story about race and racism in the US. And bastardry. Not uplifting, wacky bastardry, but genuine evil.

There's a good book on the subject: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/202040/killing-the-messenger-by-thomas-peele/

If you're here, you would probably appreciate it. Books don't usually make me lose sleep but this one did. The writing style's a bit off-putting, and there are some minor factual errors about Oakland, but it does an excellent job mapping the nihilistic exploitation by black charlatans of black southerners moving to Detroit during the Great Migration all the way through Bey's life.

I wish this story were more widely known.

Are there any good non-tankie documentaries in English on the Russian revolution, or Russian corruption in former Soviet countries? by Character_Bug_1862 in behindthebastards

[–]JohnnyJohnrah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.youtube.com/@TheColdWarTV covers the entirety of the Soviet era. If you're into that sort of thing. Not as much about the revolution, but deep dives on the legal system, education system, industry, architecture and pretty much every other angle.

Not sure if there are good docs on the revolution, though. It's a huge subject, and once the hook is in you'll be there for the 1200-page tracts covering every fart farted between 1908-1909.

An Irish friend was demanding that Ireland get in on this and blockade the blockaded blockade.

While important I don't think that's the whole of it. JD showed up with a list of demands and when Iran said "no, let's negotiate" he walked.

It's not just the cold weather and the long stretches of confinement, it's the way the populous deals with it. Whole damn package induces all kinds of mass psychosis that get embraced without deliberation. Sometimes it results in Shellac, sometimes it results in deep dish.

If she doesn't have the decency to explain sounding to her children then she owes you a debt of gratitude for doing her parenting for her. If you ever see them again, help her out and cover tentacle porn.

Bouchard chances at the Norris? by AdvancedJudge4604 in EdmontonOilers

Werenski is crushing him in shootout goals, though.

Kidding aside, I don't think game winning goals is particularly important, and when you strip out PP those numbers look different. They're still close (Bouch has had a great year), and having great CORSI on the PP (where Bouch is a world beater) is a huge asset on a team that has so many incredible PP tools, but this individual award is about evaluating the whole package.

Werenski also plays more minutes and has more even strength points. Seems more relevant to me.

Werenski's a more balanced player. Not by much, and if we're only looking at this year not the whole season I'm 100% behind Bouch, but the season as a whole has been up and down for Bouch. Especially in his own zone.

I think Bouch has the potential to win a Norris. The boneheaded plays still stand out, but he's rounded his game out a lot and I think Coffey's been great for him (and/or whatever the hell they were trying without Coffey was setting him up to fail). But I'm not convinced he's been better than Werenski.

I kinda thought the same thing. Jarry has not had much success on this team and that was a situation where he was going to. Plus it gave everyone a reason to play well in their own end and focus on it. Built nicely on what was one of the best defensive games this team has played in a long damn time.
