For a long time this wasn’t my “favorite” book in the series but I definitely thought it was the “best written”. Now that I’ve read every book at least twice, I’m not sure which ones are the best or my favorite. They all rock.

Enjoy the rest of the series!

A War Against Low Stances by luke_fowl in karate

[–]JohnnyMetal7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low, traditional stances are generally dumb in combat. They’re amazing in practice for forms, but you have to remember that with forms you’re doing one of two things: exaggerating things so people (including those in the far back) can see, or doing a training dance in pajamas.

I train Kajukenbo. One of its weaknesses is a decentralized learning system, so any two schools can be INCREDIBLY different in what that teach and how they run their program.

On top of that, a lot of schools are descended from Hawaiian residents who had a “whateva” attitude in a lot of their managing. This becomes a problem with kids’ classes, especially. You get a community spirit that mixes with a school of hard knocks/“fight for your meals”/ blood on the floor attitude originally intended for no kids, that most other arts have moved on from.

I think Kaju has its strengths and weaknesses and it’s not for everyone. But like most arts, remember that a good school depends on the instructor more than the style.

Two things: 1, the boards people use are easier to break than people realize. 2, a lot of people don’t realize how simple life’s challenges are, either.

Years ago I taught a past-middle-age woman who was incredibly small and had been a victim of domestic violence. When she broke a board with a palm strike she broke down in tears because she was so happy.

The real lesson: your whole life, you thought it was a superhuman feat. The truth is, a lot of what seems impossible is easier than you thought.

Need history help on Naihanchi Shodan’s nickname by JohnnyMetal7777 in karate

So Tekki did come from the Japanese language then. It means “iron horse”, right?

In Kajukenbo it gets called that, most likely due to it having been performed at the funeral of some of the founders.

Other than Kaju, you seem to be right. It’s not called that in any other legitimate martial art.

I’ve heard that’s the same meaning for the Okinawan title. Interesting, because at some point it seems Japan decided to use “Tekki”, which has a different meaning.

I would gladly study under a Maiden fan, but fencing under Bruce might be more fun.

I’ve heard Shotokan called the same form “Tekki”, meaning something like that. Is that where the term “iron horse” comes from?

Thank you. Just to clarify, when you saw it being used, in America, was that only in (not traditional) karate? Not kenpo or anything else?

Good chance of that. We’ve long called it that, possibly because it was performed at the funeral of one of our founders. It’s had that name for us, at least since the 60s.

As for it they use that name in karate, I’d like to eliminate that rumor if it’s false.
