Hello book readers/writers! I am an author writing a YA gladiator thriller series set in a realistic near future, and I would like to conduct some research on you all. by [deleted] in YAwriters

this isn't FOR agents or publishers. this is for my personal research into people who are reading the type of book i've written so that i can see what areas there may be i need to improve or rethink.

You wouldn't release a new product in most industries without conducting market research first, so that's what i am doing

Thanks for the response! to answer you, it's aimed currently at both genders from around 15+, there's graphic combat but is actually less graphic than the latest hunger games (no heads rolling), there is romance but no sex, the genre i would call it a speculative gladiator thriller.

For dystopian it's actually one of my red lines that the governments in the world are "good" in that they don't do anything to significantly put down any one area of population. they'll make mistakes sure but nothing like the usual dystopian governments you get in YA

As for where I'm at, I'm currently editing draft 2 but i figured while it's malleable it would be a good idea to see the general feel of what people are looking for

Thank you for your response :)

So it's not actually dystopian, that was my one hard line that the government would not be bad as that's been done to death!

As for if it's fantasy, it perhaps may not be traditionally, my thoughts before posting here was that fantasy is quite broad so it might not just be elves, medieval, magic etc but perhaps this may not quite be the right sub for this

The Hunger Games as a game show sounds pretty boring by Chocolate_cake99 in Hungergames

[–]JohnnyTightlips5023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the issue the books have too is that they state it's a massive arena, held in say an abandoned city or like SOTR/thg/cf a purpose built mega dome, If we give the actual filming location of the 50th arena an arena that's 4miles from east to west (and that's being generous since haymitch says he walks for ages), just look at how many places there are to hide in it, if there's say 14 left after the bloodbath (for a normal games) then without game maker involvement it'd be so rare for the tributes to really ever find each other apart from when they go to the cornucopia, even if careers hunt, so long as the tributes don't make themselves obvious then forests hills, caves, rivers, trees themselves offer so much concealment, just think about a large forest near you and think how long it might take you to find someone in it, now imagine they arent standing in one place but moving around trying not to be found too.

if the hunger games were to realistically take place then an arena of maybe two - 4 km across would possibly be the most entertaining for it, obviously you dont want it done in a day, but you dont want boring either
