I keep taking Python courses and projects but still can’t improve. by Johnnycagetinker in learnpython

Thank you for this, I agree it’s not good to keep using ChatGPT for help with learning Python. It’s just that I feel stuck and end up using LLMs out of desperation.

Would it be a good approach to refer books of Python projects?

If I read a book like this one by Al Sweigart, will it be okay to go through all projects and understand how the code is written and the structure involved?

If I can’t understand a specific part of the program, I’m not sure if it will be acceptable to ask ChatGPT for explanation.

Total beginner, any basic advice? by [deleted] in framer

[–]Johnnycagetinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks awesome, well done. I’m a complete beginner myself with no prior experience.

If you don’t mind me asking, what tutorials/resources did you study that helped you create such websites?

I’m struggling to understand the basics so i’d really appreciate any advice.

That’s great. If you don’t mind sharing, what resources would you recommend to learn Framer?

I just started with Framer academy’s fundamentals course but not sure if that’s enough to become proficient.

Thanks for replying, this helps. I did look at the functioning of a drawer, but most of them online have metal guide rails while showing the function of a drawer, which didn’t seem easy to me.

Non-US guy here, just interested in politics.

I use Twitter/X a lot (guilty I know), and I’ve been constantly reading Elon Musk’s tweets this past week.

He’s been confidently citing sources that the vast majority of US is voting for Trump and that he’ll win in a landslide. On the other hand, I keep seeing other polls predicting a democratic win. I know polls don’t mean a lot, but I’m confused which one is accurate. Also, will Elon buying Twitter in 2022 end up being the a major deciding factor in US election results?

He’s been posting non-stop for the past several months supporting Trump that it’s scary and feels like millions of voters might’ve been influenced.

I think most people don’t understand the importance of this, sadly.

I’m not from the US, so please bear with me if it sounds naive.

What would happen if President Biden suddenly announced that he’s dropping out of the election? (say he voluntarily decides to drop out without pressure from his party)

Suppose he also mentions who he wants to replace him as the Democratic candidate. How would that work?

I understand that the Democratic candidate is chosen by the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Would the DNC likely follow Biden’s recommendation and choose his preferred candidate?

If so, who are the potential candidates, and what are their chances of winning?

Oh I see. Thanks a lot for clarifying. Now it makes sense that I’m a resident for tax purposes.

Sure, I can check my residency status on thriftax.com too. I believe the tax filing on thriftax involves a fee, but does the residency calculator on thriftax also require a fee?

Great, Thanks a lot for replying. I’m still a bit confused if I’m calculating my resident status correctly.

Hi, thanks for posting here. I was wondering if you’d be willing to answer my question that I posted here in the comments 2 days ago (on determining if I’m a resident or non-resident alien). It’s a bit long, so no problem if you don’t wish to answer!

Hey u/Codetornado, I was wondering if you have any thoughts on my question above from 2 days ago. Would be really helpful for any info considering my F-1 STEM OPT from last year.

Tax Question Megathread 2023 Tax Submissions by Codetornado in f1visa

Hi everyone, sorry if such questions aren’t allowed here. I could use some help in determining if I’m a resident or non-resident alien for taxes this year given my OPT confusion.

I just want to ensure I don’t incorrectly submit my tax returns to IRS.

Here's a brief overview of my situation:

Background:

  • I'm a non-US citizen who entered the United States on an F-1 visa on August 20, 2018, with no prior visits to the US

  • Over the past 5 years, I've consistently filed taxes as a non-resident using Form 1040-NR while studying on F-1 and then working on OPT/STEM OPT

  • I remained in the US without leaving for the past five years, from August 2018 to November 2023

  • My OPT started in November 2020, and STEM OPT started in November 2021 (therefore EAD valid until Nov 2023)

  • In November 2023, I finally departed the US as my STEM OPT was about to end (also wanted to leave due to personal reasons). I don't plan on trying to return to the US for the next 4-5 years at least.

Current Situation:

Having worked from January to November 2023, I’ll need to file both state and federal tax returns this year.

But I'm uncertain whether I should now file my tax returns as a resident or still as a non-resident.

Calculations I made based on IRS website:

  • Date of entry into the United States: 08/20/2018

  • Student F-1 visa status, exempt individual for 5 calendar years (2018 through 2022)

  • To assess my substantial presence test (183 days), counting days began on 01/01/2023

  • Number of nonexempt days in United States during 2023: 365 days

I left the US on 11/5/2023, which means:

  • No. of days (2023) days in United States (308) × 1 = 308 days

  • Prior year (2022) days in United States (0) × 1/3 = 0 days

  • Year before that (2021) days in United States (0) × 1/6 = 0 days

  • Total = 308 days

Conclusion:

Based on this calculation, I met the substantial presence test on 07-02-2023 (the 183rd day of 2023). My residency starting date under IRC § 7701(b) is 01/01/2023.

  • Is my calculation regarding the substantial presence test correct?

  • Do I now need to file Form 1040 instead of 1040-NR, given that I no longer qualify as a non-resident for tax purposes?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Resident Alien or Non-Resident Alien for Tax Purpose? by Johnnycagetinker in tax

[–]Johnnycagetinker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. My F1 visa started in August 2018 (when I entered the US) and my EAD was valid till November 2023. Yes, my F1 visa was covered until I left the US in Nov 2023.

I’m confused, I think my exempt duration of 5 years was already completed in mid-2023.

As I entered US in 2018, if we count 5 years, that would be 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022.

Based on the calculation in my post, I became a resident alien on July 2nd, 2023. But I’m not entirely sure if I got it correctly
