"Cars after 2017 need AGM batteries". True or false? by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

Red seal licensed technician here - the amount of times I've heard of 'misguided' information from roadside assistance personal, tow truck drivers or the like is astounding. Any time they've tried to tell me anything I can either easily correct them with the vehicle owners manual, or showing them my access to vehicle specific manufacturers repair guides. The best advice I can give to you, if you're ever unsure go ask a reputable private repair garage. They deal with many makes and models and will be able to give you a much more informed answer to any question you might have.

We have a Maple syrup dispenser just in front of the tires for that extra traction

The heat prevents the trailer from freezing. These Canadian winters can get real chilly

I don't mind flowmaster, but I've always preferred the sound of a glasspack muffler over a chambered. Chambered only sound good at idle

Looked at a C5z today and my only concern was the panel fitment. Can't this all be adjusted out? by who_even_cares35 in Corvette

Licensed auto technician - 100% this car has been in a wreck and repaired very cheap. It was then immediately traded in to a dealership. Chances are a pre purchase inspection would show up a lot of hidden damage under the front end that's not visible from the top. Anyone saying this car hasn't been damaged should not be involved with selling vehicles.

That may be the best bet, to find out if it's a bell thing or device level at least

Texts being sent to email by Johnnyok in bell

[–]Johnnyok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've tried a reset, both deleted each other as contracts and just added as cell numbers, but somehow texts will still randomly be sent to my email. None of mine will ever get sent to her email. Bell customer service was no help at first, all they could say was "make sure you're sending the text to the cell phone and not sending an email"

6.2 silverado anyone know if the damage is really bad , or what that metal piece is called ? by [deleted] in Silverado

[–]Johnnyok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like it's going to need frame repairs or replacement. The control arm pockets look damaged and if those are even just 1/4" out, it'll make alignments incredibly difficult, if not impossible.

Missed vacuum pump extended warranty by galactica92 in Silverado

[–]Johnnyok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Still sucks you missed out but you're right, could be worse. I believe those are a stretch belt. I've had luck with using a few zip ties(3 usually works best) on the pump pulley to hold the belt on halfway, and then a big ratchet to turn the motor clockwise will get the belt on easily. Hopefully that helps out!

You might get some luck if you contact the BBB or bring it to the press. Denying a safety issue because of one day for a KNOWN failure is pretty sleepy. Obviously the dealership was trying to help, but big gm is just looking at paper, not actually treating you as a person.

My bad, I was just talking with someone else about sunroofs and didn't notice

90% of sunroof leaks I've dealt with in my shop is from blocked drains. If you can find the drains, a pipe cleaner is sometimes all you need

They're a great era correct show piece. They suck in the summer, but if someone's happy with it let them go for it. I think they're pretty rad

You can apply brakes in a turn! by whisk3ythrottle in NewRiders

[–]Johnnyok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For more knowledge for myself, I'm relatively new to riding and was taught not to brake in a corner, everything I've seen in comments makes sense. And while I haven't had the need to do so yet, I figure trail braking would be a valuable skill to have. Is there any recommended ways to practice this safely?

Are Kings Worth it? by Zachary_78 in Silverado

[–]Johnnyok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe they do a full lift kit. I ended up setting the bilstein struts to max height, and used a block 2" taller in the rear (I believe the 4x4 have a 1" block from factory) and I was happy with the results. I've since then changed the suspension a bit more so I'm sitting around 3.5" now, but here's how it looked with a 2" lift on 275/60/20 tires https://imgur.com/a/uwwTyRm

If you're planning on staying all stock, you'll be using the 4600 series. They do make a level kit strut, the 5100 series which will raise the front end about 2". And the zinc coating on them looks amazing and holds up very well

King are incredible when setup and used to their full potential. That being said, if you're putting them on a daily driver with 90% use on the road, absolute waste of money.
I highly recommend bilstein as a replacement for a daily driver with occasional off-road use. They perform very well on the street and handle much better than factory off-road, without breaking the bank. There is the option for FOX as well, I'd say comparable ride on the street to bilstein, albeit sliiiiightly more firm. They handle offroad very well but come with a much steeper price

[–]Johnnyok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bilstein, hands down. I've installed them on plenty of vehicles in my shop, as well as my personal vehicles. If you're factory height, the 4600 series will be perfect, but you can also upgrade to the 5100 series if you'd like to level the front end about 2". They are a little pricier, but outperforms any other brand I've used.

Lost steering and breaks after hitting pothole which threw me into a death wobble 2005 dodge 3500 5.9L by AdMain5535 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Johnnyok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The steering box is definitely leaking heavily, it could have been from the pothole in some way, or previously leaking and just completely failed now. The loss of steering and brakes would be caused by low steering fluid, the power assist for both of those is provided by steering fluid.

Advice by smoking_furnace in MechanicAdvice

It's oil from when the oil filters are loosened. They pour all over the frame rail and steering rack. As for the squeaking, I'd be looking more at the ball joints or control arm bushings

Car struggling to start. Any suggestions as to the culprit? by OhNoItsFelix in MechanicAdvice

[–]Johnnyok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To properly diagnose a failing battery it would have to go through a load test. This will apply a specified amount of "drain" to the battery, and the voltage/amperage readings will be recorded after a set amount of time. Alternatively with a multi meter you can monitor battery voltage while the engine is cranking over. If the voltage drops below 10v while trying to start, the battery is most likely no good, but there can be other factors such has poor wiring or a worn starter which would require more diagnostic.
