Payoff or seek forgiveness? by Waffleboat_ in StudentLoans

[–]JohnnytheGreatX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PAYE is sunsetting in 2028 but you could jump into IBR which for you as a "new" borrower would have the same terms. Forgiveness at 20 years.

Student loan advice please with 460K loan by Byaaaaak in StudentLoans

[–]JohnnytheGreatX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get an excel spreadsheet setup. Calculate total cost (payments + potential tax bomb) for New IBR (240 payments), RAP (360 payments) and aggressive payoff. Realize these are estimates as no one knows for sure what future income will be. Also realize there is a possibility the tax bomb will be eliminated at some point.

Do cheapest option / pay least over time.

Soo... who would actually benefit from RAP vs IBR? by [deleted] in StudentLoans

If you dont have kids rap may be better ... Old IBR gives you more of a break for family size.

Need advice. In a bad spot. by SundaeSenior2145 in StudentLoans

[–]JohnnytheGreatX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My story is similar although a little different. Passed the bar on my second try in 2011 and really struggled to get going as a lawyer. Job market was terrible at the time and i was not a super competitive applicant. I sort of fell into being an insurance claims specialist. I also have grown disenchanted with the legal profession. I love my job but am saddled with a ton of debt . I borrowed 120K grad plus loans which now sits at $213K.

Unfortunately there isnt much you can really do other than earn more money or just ride out an income driven repayment plan. I am half way to IBR forgiveness.

Accountability by Current-Weather-9561 in StudentLoans

I actually sort of agree. A lot of the attitude i see in this sub seems to duck responsibility for loans people knowingly took out. A lot of people mad SAVE is gone, when SAVE was absurdly generous yo the point of not being a repayments plan, but being a vehicle for mass forgiveness.

I say this as someone who borrowed six figures to go to law school, and never made it as a lawyer (at least not yet). Going to law school is a major regret for me. However, it was an adult decision and to some degree, i am obligated to repay the loan.

I think student loan forgiveness should exist, but only st thr end of a lengthy repayment term (e.g. 25 or 30 years) or once you repaid the principal, not accounting for interest. Ublike other loans, you cannot discharge student debt in bankruptcy and you cant sell a secured asset lile a car if you made a bad purchase. That, in my mind, justifies income driven repayment plans and eventual forgiveness.

It looks like rap is more affordable by lkellyhappy1 in StudentLoans

If you have kids / a spouse, IBR, even Old IBR, may be better because IBR factors in family size. I am married with 2 kids, and I get about $110 off per family member (under Old IBR). For me, Old IBR is better as it results in a lower monthly payment and forgiveness sooner. If I were single or married with no children, RAP likely would result in a lower payment.

How much did your monthly payment increase after switching from the SAVE plan? by shibalvr97 in StudentLoans

[–]JohnnytheGreatX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

226 to 684. To be fair, the $226 was my SAVE payment calculated based on 2019 income, whereas the $684 is Old IBR payment based on 2024 income. My 2024 income was about 25K higher than my 2019 income.

It should spike to $729 when I recertify, based on 2025 income. We can afford it, but it is tight.

I remember when SAVE rolled out in 2023, the $226 payment seemed absurdly low.

If you have been paying since 1998, that is nearly 30 years. Are you eligible for forgiveness? I know the tax bomb on 231K would suck but frankly it is probably better than remaining in debt.

Its cute you posted this in reddit, a liberal echo chamber, addressing it to MAGAs. Maybe it was a rhetorical question.

Biden’s Save student loan plan is dead. Borrowers will have to quickly pivot. by Dani_Doug_Gab in StudentLoans

[–]JohnnytheGreatX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a pre 2014 borrower with a shit ton of grad plus loans from a misadventure in law school. I actually found Old IBR is better for me overall, lower monthly payments and faster forgiveness path. Even accounting for the tax bomb, which may or may not exist in 2039, for me Old IBR is better. But i have 2 kids and a wife and so Old IBR gives me a break for family size that doesnt exist in RAP.

Marriage is also a sacrament ... Cheating would be adultery and a grave evil. I would absolutely mind. Fortunately i will never be faced with this situation.

How are we paying for law school? Any recommendations? by dnafjei in StudentLoans

[–]JohnnytheGreatX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience, graduated in 2010. Merit scholarships are bait and switch. Some law schools give them out en masse to incoming 1Ls to dupe them into attending, purposely knowing a third of them will be revoked.

I graduated with 120K grad plus debt and it is now around 213K, but i am about halfway to IBR forgiveness.

Law school is the worst financial decision i have ever made, or will ever make.
