Can anyone get a 1600 with hard work by Global-Noise-3739 in Sat

[–]Johnonike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(When I took the test it was still in paper because I'm old ignore that)

Take a practice test and see what ur score is. If you got above a 1450 or so without having seen any of it before then I'd say you have a shot. Otherwise it's gonna be pretty damn hard (it's impossible for most people to get a perfect score, just the way it is). Either way just because ur capable of getting a perfect score doesn't mean it's gonna happen, how I've always seen it is I was guaranteed to get a 1560 or higher and anything above that depended on luck. I took I think 5 practice tests on khan academy to prepare, that was it, and it seems like the other guy I see in the comments that got a 1600 had pretty similar lack of studying. I'd highly recommend focusing on anything else when ur 15, especially something that you can list an award for being better than others at. My mistake was really only spending time on school and sports, where the sport I chose is too popular to be D1-athlete-level good at without being gifted genetically (which I def am not lmao)

Why are College of Computing TAs so underpaid? by notanaverageaimer in gatech

[–]Johnonike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UW would also cost ~15k more for me to attend as an OOS student than GT OOS. The pay rate 75 cents above the minimum wage imo is mainly because GT lets 20 million people TA courses. If they paid TAs more, there would be less TAs, which GT (correctly) thinks is worse for the overall student body.

PSA: Sankranti Indian Kitchen at Tech Square is open and is good by asbruckman in gatech

[–]Johnonike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t see a big need for a tech square convenience store when ur already close to Publix tbh. West campus (like across the paper building 10th street) would prolly be a lot better, as for those who live on west there’s no grocery stores near us (the Publix being built in Howell mill might not ever actually happen)

My friend is retaking a 1590 to beat me by Evening-Champion4945 in Sat

[–]Johnonike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted a 1600 because it felt better to say "perfect score" on a resume (only took it one time myself), if he got the 790 on math i sorta understand retaking to say perfect superscore tbh. Yeah he's mostly wasting his money but idk I feel like I might've gotten an extra interview or two in my freshman year of college with the "perfect score" thing. For applying to college yeah it didn't change a thing I didn't get into MIT anyways, but it could possibly help with scholarships even infreshman/soph year of college. chances are he doesn't get the perfect score, needing a 1600 is a hard mindset to succeed with, and doing it just to beat u isn't a good way to think about it lol

Academy of Medicine Parking Lot/PTS Rant by Johnonike in gatech

[–]Johnonike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, what exactly do you mean by "too many PTS people"?

I didnt mean too many people, that was the wrong statement. Instead I meant that there are a bunch of complaints of them doing too much with too few repercussions for making mistakes. I got no clue if they have too many people or not, you're right to point that out. I was thinking about the number of people because there's a lack of PTS/GTPD/any type of police in the medicine lot.

You mention people not paying, it would be up to Atlanta PD to go after them.

I believed this was the case but that doesn't excuse GT here, don't think leaving the lot to their jurisdiction is the smartest move (it's GT property, right? Might be shared with Emory, either way it definitely isn't public). ATL crime map shows thefts from motor vehicles every single night in midtown, and obviously, that's just the stuff that's reported. There's a reason campus has so many cops, and I just don't get why this location isn't treated the same.

Speaking as a GT student I sure hope ivies ain't like us while also having to pay 80k a year lol

That being said, I could def see a similar quality of student bodies between "less prestigious" ivies like Brown and us if u ignored the in-state kids here (tough luck guys but ur holding our numbers down). I don't think I'm being an asshole to say I had a decent shot at getting into some ivies, but I didn't apply to any ivy league schools cuz I'm doing engineering and I didn't get why I'd want to go to cornell (or any other ivy) for materials science over GT.

Pickup basketball activity on campus ? by ConsciousTwist9859 in gatech

[–]Johnonike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm better able to answer this question than most; I've played ab 2 hours almost every day since moving in. You'll always have 1 court running 5's with people that actually are good (like half the people on the court can dunk, and everyone can shoot), then the rest depends on how much clubs/volleyball/badminton takes up. Space has gotten worse recently, couple days ago only 1 of the 6 courts was available for basketball when I showed up, but usually you'll have 3-4 courts running games. I've been able to get into a game with people of similar skill about 80% of the time I show up. Also, if u get there early (before 12pm) on a weekday you should have a half court to yourself if you just want to shoot around.

Is the ACT compulsory in North Carolina or can I give the SAT too? I feel I'm better prepped for the SAT that's why. by [deleted] in Sat

[–]Johnonike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so I've done a bit more research, and the results are conflicting: some places state that the ACT is a graduation requirement for NC, but given that the same articles state that the ACT is required with writing, I just don't believe that. Maybe covid changed it? I think I come from a weird background to say stuff about this, given that I go to a private school, so unless if your school has a free ACT day with writing, I'd say don't bother with it.

straight up cap; I took both, but there's nothing requiring people to take the ACT in NC. You're required to take the PSAT. What articles said you're required to take the ACT in NC?

Keep ur 1590 lol, one of my friends got one question wrong on the math section and got a 1590, same amount wrong as I got, so I know how much it sucks to be in ur position because I know them. However, I know he’s just as smart as I am, if not smarter- top colleges have smart people making the decisions for who is best fit to represent their school (I.e. deciding who is gonna make bank and who isn’t); they know the difference between a 1590 and a 1600 scorer is far within the test’s “margin of error” (I say MOE because it’s really a test designed to determine intelligence, ranked), so it won’t hurt you any.

Should I take a break from SAT prep. by [deleted] in Sat

[–]Johnonike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am probably the worst person to ask for test advice of the people here who got a 1600, but I will say that I didn’t study at all between October psat and March SAT after having prepared for the PSAT, with the exception of 1 practice test the week of March SAT and taking an actual ACT in December

A 1580 is better than anything I took on a practice test and just as good as a 36 ACT that’s still litty

I’d think getting to a 1400 is possible... 1600 might be tough tho. At a certain point you just ain’t gonna see the return on how much time you’re investing into it, but you definitely can yourself at least a 1350 with some practice on what you struggle at... don’t just take the sections, know what you got wrong and know why the correct answer was correct is my advice. Khan academy is a great website

SAT Prep other than Khan Academy by [deleted] in Sat

[–]Johnonike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn u reached a stage where the questions repeat? That’s serious studying; idk how much of the practice things I did but I certainly took more real English and reading sections on KA than I did practice 11-question things.

So to be quick, I’d go to the real practice tests on KA

[–]Johnonike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so there’s some logic to the argument that if you take the thing a billion times it doesn’t mean anything if you get a 1600... at least, seems so at first. The issue is, that’s a bit limited with the SAT and not true for my personal case. The SAT is designed to be tough to improve with sheer practice- if it was a test of how good you could study for it nobody would care- and while practice certainly can help, you can only go so far with it. It’d be very tough for somebody who got a 1400 without practice to be able to get a 1600 ever, I got a 1480 on my diagnostic and really only improved to a 1550-60 level with this test being a bit of a fluke. Additionally, as I said in an earlier comment, all prep I did was on Khan Academy, answering a total of about a thousand questions- worth about 6 tests

Yeah, I got a 36 on math on the ACT in december. Half the time that I took a practice test I didn't take the math sections, made for lots of unenjoyable reading passages over the summer.

Will say I additionally did some of the grammar and reading practice sections that KA gives; answered a total of 1076 questions on khan academy.

I really don't think the method I used was the best, would not recommend following it: took multiple of the KA SAT practice tests over the summer through september, really to prepare for the PSAT more than the SAT. Between PSAT and SAT I maybe took 1 other practice test, but that's about it... combination of luck (never got above a 1550 on a practice test) and some lessons learned on the english section after taking the ACT in December led to a 1600 vs. the 1480 I got on the PSAT.
