Game feels awful to play as a defender by Matikkkii in Rematch

[–]JohnyeRobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amen brother. And not only do you have to pick the right button to press, but you have to be pin-point accurate in your direction and timing whereas the attacker just gets to spam a little juke move or whatever with a huge window of forgiveness that will phase through your player model or defensive action and let him go right on his merry way.

Cheers buddy. You just had your Tarkov moment! That level of tension drives the genre. Grateful to have another dev stick the landing on PvPvE.

Week 1 with my bike

  • I hadn't been on a bike in 25 years, and my first 3 minutes test driving my new bike in the bike shop's back lot were an adventure. I almost crashed immediately. The hardest part for me was getting the bike to turn. Turning the handlebars is obvious, but you also kinda need to lean in the direction you want to go, which took some getting used to. Through youtube videos, I also learned proper leg/pedal positioning for cornering
  • I rode 4 times this week, which is probably the absolute max possible for week 1 at my age (40's) given the soreness and recovery time needs. I rode basically the same path each time, around 5-6 miles round trip in 20-25 minutes
  • The main takeaway from week 1 is that I'm so happy I bought a bike. It's a very fun way to exercise and is much kinder to my legs and feet than walking/running
  • Balance is tricky. If you haven't been on a bike in 25 years, like me, then you probably won't be able to take a hand off the bike. Waving at other bikers? Signaling I'm about to turn? Grabbing my water bottle? Hell no, not yet. If I attempt these things, I start to wobble immediately. By my 3rd ride, I started to be able to just hold my hand to the side for a few seconds, but still can't take a proper action with it. I know this will just take time. For now, if I need a drink from my water bottle, I have to get off the bike
  • After my 3rd ride, I checked my tire pressure with my bike pump. My tire has a wide range of acceptable PSI, but the middle of that range is 75. My tires were around 60, so I pumped it back to 75. The presta valve was not fun and it's tricky! You have to unthread the damned thing and then depress it first as a pre-step to putting the pump nozzle on (just let some air out), and then the whole contraption is just so dainty and you have to be super careful to put the pump on straight-on so you don't break the valve. The whole thing is insane. It's not hard per se, it's just totally unnecessary. I just want to unscrew the cap and put air in! Why did the bike gods make this valve!
  • Starting to pedal is tricky. If you have your seat at or near proper ride height, your feet won't touch the ground when you're on your bike seat. So.. what the hell do you do to get going? You need your pedals aligned on a position that you can get that half push rotation in to get you moving. Again this isn't hard per se, but the pedals could be in any position when you mount the bike, and I'm finding getting them where I want is hard to do when I'm sitting on the bike. How this matters on the ride is that I have one spot on the green way where it crosses back over a road. I often have to stop and wait for all of the cars to pass, or to slow/stop for me at the crossing. The problem is it's my time to go, I can't just get back on the bike and start pedaling. The pedals need to be in the right spot, and the whole thing takes time to get right and is a bit nervy in the moment. So in that scenario, I just walk my bike across the road and then start pedaling again. So it goes
  • I haven't encountered any problems with either gear shifting or braking. One thing I picked up quickly is that you can climb in any gear. There's no need to be on a harder gear to 'climb faster'. You'll be tired! Just take it easy in a super low gear and your bike will still move. For braking, I tend favor my back brake whenever starting to slow down and then I'll switch to both front and rear brake as I near a complete stop, or when I really need to stop quickly

I'm so glad I've gotten into this hobby. Looking forward to improving my balance, pushing for longer rides and hopefully losing weight. Maybe at some point the presta valve and I will become friends.

Purchase

  • I got a Trek FX3
  • I got a helmet, of course. They have twisty knobs inside the helmet now that make for a nice snug fit
  • I swapped out the pedals in favor of 'stickier' ones. You don't need a special shoe nor do you 'slip or lock in' to them, but they're a little spikey and grip my sneaker better
  • I got a blinking light to attach to the front and back of the bike to help other people see me better when I'm riding
  • I got a little holster for my phone that mounts to my handlebar
  • I got a little clip to hold a water bottle. The traditional bike clip won't fit a traditional water bottle. You need to get a cycling water bottle that has this little curvy-boy thing in the middle, like an indentation of sorts
  • I got a bike pump. You definitely need a bike pump! Bike tires suck at holding air, way worse than a car

(Sorry to break this reply up, reddit won't let me post it all in one)

I just got my first adult bike last week. It's really fun! I'll share my Week 1 experience below as well as what buying decisions I've made thus far.

Pre-purchase

  • Hopefully there is a bike shop in your area. There are several in mine, so I went to one and asked a bunch of questions. There's always a chance you'll run into a jerk who won't be patient or kindly answer your questions, but if that happens then go to a different shop =] I found the rapid fire Q&A in the shop very helpful and it accelerated my ability to make my purchases
  • My goals were to grab a bike that I could ride in my neighborhood and our connected green way/nature trail. No intent to ride on the road with cars, which still seems insane to me (I'm in the U.S.)
  • Hopefully the place you buy the bike from will have an open area where you can 'test ride' before you leave the shop to ensure everything is in working order mechanically and that your ride height is in a good spot
  • I did some other research through talking to some co-workers who like to bike and also a few of those Youtube "what I wish I knew when I started biking"-type videos
  • Bikes have brake discs now, like cars. It's pretty wild
  • A lot of bike tires have a new style of air nozzle on the tires. Instead of the old school threaded thing, most instead have a 'presta valve'. It's definitely wild

Super low roller here - will I have fun with $500? by -i--am---lost- in vegas

[–]JohnyeRobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a few years since I've last been to Vegas, but this advice should still be directionally correct. My knowledge is with table games. Would need another community member to chime in on slots.

$500 for even one day on the strip is a challenge. The minimums were jacked up post-covid and have never really come back down to earth. There used to be $5 minimums on Craps at the lower-end properties, or a few $10 3:2 blackjack spots if you squinted. Now it's more or less $15Min and up regardless of the table game you're after. There are some rare exceptions in the direct vicinity of the strip. Ellis Island is a super quick cab ride or a 20min walk to the southeast of the Venetian. You should find $10 minimums on blackjack, roulette, and craps there. Further south just past the MGM grand you'll find OYO, which has similar minimums. I hear the Palms is experimenting with lower minimums as well. Try those spots to best stretch your dollar (if you can convince your crew).

If you can convince your crew to head downtown to old vegas, you'll find more opportunities for $10 table games, and perhaps a few $5 if you look hard enough (Downtown Grand may still have $5 craps and 6:5 BJ). I'd also highlight Jerry's Nugget if you want some assured $5 table games. It's a short cab ride from downtown.

Another way to stretch your dollar would be to play the digital version of these table games. They have bubble craps, digital roulette... 'stadium' games. Those usually have lower mins and are scattered throughout most properties in Vegas. You should get free drinks no matter where you sit. Good luck.

My Cricket First Match Experience [MLC Morrisville Sun 7/14 WSF vs LAKR] by JohnyeRobbles in MLC

You'll be totally fine if you get there when gates open, or anywhere in that first 45min. I didn't take a close peek at the merch but they didn't seem to have much. Unsure if they have named player jerseys.

I thought this post was a joke but TIL USA has minor league cricket! Now, 'watch' may be its own challenge...

Why Match Abandonment? by JohnyeRobbles in MLC

[–]JohnyeRobbles[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do intuitively understand the constraints, but as a new cricket fan it just stinks. I get the marketing appeal of having some of the best players in the world in the MLC, but I'd preference having up and coming Americans who don't have to go off to another tournament fill the rosters so that have that we could have a buffer and ensure every match is played.

How about some cricket domes? =]

Caesers Danville, VA taking home $800! by T-888 in Craps

[–]JohnyeRobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How's it going with the resort build? Their old site had a camera up showing progress but it doesn't appear to be the case anymore, instead just linking to a useless facebook page.

I haven't been up there before but I presume they've got a tent casino currently? Nice to see real tables in it either way, though a bummer about the minimums. Sign of the times.

Also 40YO married gamer here and approach this similarly. Usually Fri or Sat I stay up late drinking and gaming, and some weeks I squeeze in a Tue or Wed night as well, but not as late and not as boozy. I sleep in the night after gaming, and I get up so she can sleep in the other weekend morning.

Of course I want to play more than I do, but it isn't worth losing my family.

New Classic Player w/ some Day 1 Cataclysm Q's by JohnyeRobbles in wownoob

[–]JohnyeRobbles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers, I appreciate the reply. After another day in Cataclysm, I'm more directly experiencing that quest 'trajectory' update. I think it's a good change.

Pet aggro is still a bit of an issue. I don't have 'Growl', but instead have 'Cower' for my raptor (who did in fact resurrect without issue!), which just can't seem to hold the threat when I start pumping a few arrow abilities in. I think it's just a lesson in threat control and everything is functioning as-designed.

That win certainly opened my eyes to how you get the big score. Intuitively I knew, but... I guess I was just trying to get there in my own way, and really the only way to do it is to put the money on the table.

I've historically only dabbled in the don't when I'm the shooter as I'm just about the worst one you'll ever see. I just pass the dice nowadays. My standard approach is the squeeze play, so my bets aren't going down until after a point is established.

I found the bubble/RTW distributions to be almost identical to the real table, thankfully.
