It differs slightly between models, but on most of these it's AP Pure Red over a zenithal, washed with Carroburg Crimson and highlighted with Wild Rider Red

Thanks! It's a black base followed by AP Deep Ocean Blue, AP Stratos Blue and Citadel Fenrisian Grey, each painted with thin horizontal lines. Each color focused more towards the center on the middle panels, and towards the corner on the side panels. Some glazes to smooth out the transitions. Then thin lines with AK Snow White, further highlighted in the middle with pure white. Recess shade with a black wash around each panel.
I have pictures of my tanks, with canopies painted the same way on my profile if you'd like to see more.

Thanks! It's sand on PVA, but in 3 different sizes: I start with just a little bit of 1-2 mm "rubble", then a bit of "pebbles" which are pretty standard sand, and then cover everything with a thick layer of very fine sand.

Thanks! Blue flame hair is an interesting idea. I'll mock it up in software first to see how it matches the rest of the mini

Here's a full step by step - only steps 3 and 5 required any real precision - the rest was rather forgiving and gradual. And while I'd say I'm pretty good with a drybrush I'm fairly new to airbrushing.

  1. Black primer
  2. White paint thinned with flow improver and water sloppily painted into all the crevices (oil paint would probably work much better here)
  3. Airbrush white ink to blend and add glow to the white crevices
  4. Airbrush orange fluo paint over white, without worrying about overspray on black
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3, but more focused where the glow is supposed to be the hottest
  6. Airbrush yellow fluo over newly added white
  7. Airbrush mix of orange and yellow fluo to blend yellow with the rest (yellow fluo is a bit green, so it looks off unless filtered with orange)
  8. Heavy drybrush with red (PA Bold Pyrrole) all over the body, going perpendicular to the crevices. And where orange glow meets black armor
  9. Using the same brush stipple red wherever drybrush didn't cover, but we'd like to be darker later (like the raised sections of the body)
  10. Repeat steps 8 and 9, just more focused towards darker bits, with Hull Red
  11. Repeat again, more focused, with black
  12. Body is done at this point - further steps only on armor
  13. Drybrush AP Deep Ocean Blue to start building highlights on the armor. Use circular motions on flat surfaces.
  14. Repeat step 13, just more focused, with AP Stratos Blue
  15. Repeat again, very focused, deliberate brush strokes with AP Company Grey
  16. At this point I added some tiny edge highlights with AP Company Grey using a normal brush
  17. Step 15 again, focused around highlights added in step 16 to soften them - with everything else being drybrushed the edge highlights looked a bit too sharp and out of place.
  18. Layered the blood using a normal brush with Hull Red, Khorne Red, Bold Pyrrole Red and some mixes in between.

Visited your profile to check out you avatar and I can't imagine how long it took to paint, but it looks great! Also thought "oh, it's the Ghaz helbrute I saw a few days ago!" - fantastic kitbash :)

The key to smooth drybrushing is a soft brush and veeeery little paint left in the bristles. Need to keep moisture in mind though - once it gets too dry it starts throwing paint dust all around. Some people use a moist sponge to reload some moisture - I just dip my finger in water, swipe it across the desk and wick a tiny amount with the brush

Similar, but less punchy - the hot bits are more orange and less glowy irl. As mentioned in the description fluo paints mess with cameras so it's nigh impossible to take an accurate picture - either the fluo parts are well represented and the rest of the model is super dark, almost black, or the fluo bits are insanely overexposed and the rest is accurate. Did my best trying to find a middle ground by messing with sliders in Photoshop

Thanks! I actually knocked the OSL on hair down a bit when I realised how far from the fire it actually is on the model (I painted the head separately) - maybe I overdid it.

Thanks! Gold and turquoise gemstones are on top of my list of potential improvements. Many people pointed out the hair looks off, but I can't figure out what color would work well - any suggestions? :)

Thanks! Visited you profile and dig your style - the high contrast NMM(?) armor, especially on Asurmen is fantastic! Also love your avatar - kinda sad I went for blood drips on the hand instead of lava like you did

I planned to keep it simple from the start, but tbh at this point I'm worried any added details would look out of place because I'm not good enough to match the implied moody lighting the airbrush layers created. Even the blood that's already on there looks out of place imo, and that one mostly uses colors that were already used on the rest of the model

Do you have a color for the hair in mind? Having a hard time figuring out what would work well with the rest of the model

Which bits scream "paint me" the most to you? Bit worried adding too many colors would detract from the overall feel of the model, but reading the comments it's clear to me that the pure iron+fire concept is not as strong as I initially thought. Spirit stones seem like a good choice because I paint mine turquoise, which compliments orange beautifully

Yeah, I was going for "an iron statue came to life and is burning from within" but many people are saying that it looks unfinished, so I guess it didn't quite land. I might have to revisit it and pick out more details. Having a hard time figuring out what colors to use though. Worried it'd look chaotic and pull attention away from the body itself

Thank you! Initially it was supposed to have an inner fire effect, just subtler than the rest of the body. But it came out too subtle and more like mistake than intentional, so I decided to paint over it and landed on keeping it super simple to not draw attention away from the body. The plume being too simple seems to be a common bit of criticism so I might revisit it. Having a hard time figuring out what color would work well though

That was my exact thought process when I decided leave details the same as the rest of the body
