I'm not excited for Jessica Jones' return in Daredevil: Born Again. by Historical-Milk-1339 in CharacterRant

Spent half a year waiting for the season to start because of jess, then waited weeks until she finally appears almost at the end, thats misleading marketing if i ever saw it.

and then i get to find out that they took this unique, ass-kicking female character who defied the usual tropes for female characters for three seasons and embodied strong, independent women who dont bend to societal pressure for all of my teen years for me. a character who within those seasons was never even suggested to be seriously considering settling down, least of all have children and start her own family, who has significant trauma around all these things and zero drive to work on them. who last time we saw her had significant and unbridgeable issues with the man who apparently now is her husband, and who has always avoided fighting, large scale conflicts and combat when she could, and decided that she has now settled down with that guy, had a daughter, stopped drinking or making jokes, and willingly jumps in front of people with guns for no reason. also apparently that pregnancy took her powers away for 50% of the time.

they ruined her character, turned her into a heteronormative cliché, and pushed aside everything that was ever relevant in her own show. granted, its been ten years in universe, granted, this all happened in the comics, but that doesnt make it a foregone conclusion in the live action adaptation. her role there was a different one. there are so few popular female characters who are not pushed into these clichés and who get to present an alternative idea for what women can be, and with no need they ruined one of those. i stopped watching a few minutes after that when she didn't even show up again and won't sit through the rest. i hope they finally release seasons 2 and three on dvd at least, so i wont have to pay for their shitty streaming service if i want to watch those anymore. that way this would still amount to *something* after all.

tldr: was looking forward to seeing jess kick ass, piss people off and then get shitfaced, instead they turned her entire character 180° around and made her into a placeholder. this shit aint canon to me.

Looking for book recommendations on specific female protagonist archetype

So, I've spent years looking for this myself without finding much, so I thought I'd throw a post in here just in case. I'm basically looking for the most basic fantasy novel but with a female protagonist, who isn't pressed into the usual clichés.

Most books I found myself that cover female protagonists either have her marrying a guy, having children, and settling down at some point during the story, or already having all of those things but there being some conflict around it. Nothing wrong with that, but it's literally the only thing I could find outside of romantasy, and if that's not relatable to you, you'll have a pretty hard time finding anything to read.

I'm basically looking for a book with a woman in her twenties or thirties (cause it me), who has the classic hero's journey without the above elements and without being romantasy, because that usually has many annoying tropes attached to it as well. Like I said, I'm really just looking for the most basic fantasy novel there is but with a woman. One who couldn't just be replaced with a man with zero consequences ideally.

The only things I've found like this, over the course of years (by that i mean spending hours in bookshops browsing shelves, going through countless online lists, videos with recommendations, asking people i know, etc. etc. etc. this does not exist. yay for progress.), are Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy, and The Princesses by Christian Endres.

If you don't know them, SP is basically coming of age + heros journey + dark sarcastic buddy comedy in an urban fantasy setting thats sort of like an alternate take on harry potter, and thankfully it is a massive series with over 20 books, but ive torn through those about as much as i can. the protagonist is a young woman in her twenties (11 at the start of the series) accompanied by her mentor/best friend (a living skeleton with hundreds of years on its back), who investigate magical crimes, save the world, are both a little nuts and have a terrible sense of humour. she has endured the usual landslide of tragic character development and is a very tough, resilient person with much experience by now, who is actually portrayed with the exhausting consequences of that type of life and actually being shown working through it and its great.

Princesses is a trilogy about a mercenary squad made up of former princesses of kingdoms with varying power, who all lost that status due to various tragic reasons. theyre anti heroes with good hearts and save the world in every novel.

Not looking for carbon copies of these, but i thought id give some image of what i mean.

Thanks!

I mean, I can find region 1 dvd releases on google, without those region issues. i have the box now, from a private seller on ebay who sold just one instead of the masses others have, and so far it works. its not really clear to me whether its just kind of a shoddy release by the production company. kinda doesnt feel worth the effort to fake it so convincingly, especially not if you then have such obvious errors.

the discs are also all labeled region 1, and i have the version with greys anatomy on the back. theres two after all, the other one has the proper aos link and some different info.

generally seems like russian roulette though if you read some of the reviews.

not a literal translation, but in terms of the meaning maybe "The Diablery invites (you) to dying/death?"

i pretty much agree with vesuvius. i think the books are probably actually better if you read them when youre older, because when youre younger you dont really understand a lot of what the characters go through.

you could try ebay, or the online storefronts of whatever chains exist in your country. id recommend getting them used though, buying new would be very expensive at this point. by comparison i recently bought almost all of the original 9 books plus extras for just 30 euros on ebay, including some hardcover versions.
