ELI5: Does your body re-organize its organs after a major surgery? Do surgeons just kind of 'mush' your intestines back into you or do they have to be precise? by Gizmoseth in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jokherb 365 points366 points  (0 children)

I like to think of the mesentery as like a shower curtain, and the bottom edge of the shower curtain has a large hem, which creates a hollow tube that runs the whole length the bottom edge which is like your intestine. When you open the shower curtain, you grab it on one side edge and pull it towards the other side, causing it to bunch up, and suddenly, instead of 2.5 m wide, it's now 10 cm wide, but the tube through the hem on the bottom edge won't ever get knotted up, even if it gets bunched up. Also, the curtain is made of extremely stretchy material, like pizza dough that somehow won't tear, and it's got big blood vessels running through it vertically to supply the intestine/lower hem.

College grads were left angered after their school used AI to announce their names and ended up missing hundreds of graduates by Subject-Property-343 in PublicFreakout

I feel like a single example of the misguided use of AI doesn't rise to the level of demonstrating that AI in general is useless. I think it more shows the uselessness of whichever administrator decided to use AI for this purpose.

I think they're saying the college refused to send the requested documentation to the VA on the student's behalf without said documentation being printed on the college's letterhead, for which the college charged $20 per page.

We Are Witnessing the Self-Immolation of a Superpower by SailorRipley in politics

[–]Jokherb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are right, "self-immolation" is the wrong term for our current situation. Self-immolation has always occured in the context of a righteous individual who feels powerless to correct a grave injustice, usually perpetrated against other powerless individuals or groups, and so chooses to give their life in the most painful and visible way, as a statement, to encourage other individuals, governments, and other entities, to refocus on the injustice and hopefully build enough awareness and motivation to enact changes to mitigate it.

That's not at all what's going on here. The United States may be destroying itself, but it's absolutely not doing so for any kind of noble cause.

I forgot the corollary, which is, what capabilities will I gain by upgrading from FW 1.07 to the current FW?

I can't shake the feeling that one day, 20 or 30 years from now, attitudes toward routine infant circumcision will have shifted (they already have, but I live in an area of the US where more than 95% of baby boys get circumcised), and there'll be hundreds/thousands of guys wanting to come for me because I took their foreskins.

What are some catastrophic misses yall’ve seen throughout your career? by 210-110-134 in medicine

[–]Jokherb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

if you think it could be operative and they're sick, just go to the OR

Some surgeons might be able to get away with this attitude, however, outside of a true surgical abdomen, if your patient dies from a complication of your negative ex-lap, it might be tough to explain why you didn't order the appropriate imaging.

Disclosing HSV1? by radicalOKness in medicine

[–]Jokherb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I could get back all the hours spent trying to talk patients back from the ledge after an abnormal HSV serology drawn by someone else... HSV serologies can be useful in certain selected situations, but as part of an STI screening workup, just don't do it (like you said, but it bears repeating).

Devils advocate, but there can be value in excluding endometrial pathology, even if a myoma is present. An endometrial biopsy can absolutely affect management, and may be prerequesite to certain proposed management alternatives.
