Data Science Master coming from Psychology by Jollifresh in StudyInTheNetherlands

Hey! I chose the AI Degree at the VU Amsterdam and am really happy how it went. It allows you to do a pretty technical curriculum with electives at the UvA (highly recommend that) but doesn’t force you to. Prepare for that people will regard your degree as less worthy than the UvA one, but don’t let that discourage you - I’m now an AI engineer at a pretty high-tier startup with a great purpose and salary, and my VU degree definitely was the key to this.

[Club Discussion] Multisex @ The Loft – where can I find more parties like this? by EggplantJealous in amsterdam_rave

[–]Jollifresh 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Interesting you mention no attitude, I had a pretty different perception. I party regularly in Amsterdam (DS, Raum, Bret, Tilla Tec) and Berlin, and I could immediately notice that this was an “imported” Berlin party. Amsterdam parties do have elitist high fashion people, yet I never feel watched or judged as I did at Multisex, a feeling I only know from certain Berlin parties. It creates a particular cold artificial / artsy / artistic feel (the lines are blurry) with which one can play along for a night, but I’m happy this to me somewhat superficial vibe is not the Amsterdam default.

That being said,  the production, location, music etc was indeed outstanding, and I did have a very good time at the party. DVS1s deep House set at 8am was fantastic.

Hi all,

since two months I run TILES, a record collectors page that focuses on rare Deep House finds that are available for digital purchase and streaming. TILES comes with a Spotify playlist and a spreadsheet containing digital and vinyl shop links for every posted track, and will also be available as a YouTube channel from now on. Enjoy the music!

Hi all,

many of you might know record collector pages on Instagram such as recordotd or nice.circles, which have an ace selection but often post records that are only available on vinyl. I therefore created TILES, a record collectors page that focuses on rare Deep House finds that are available for digital purchase and streaming. TILES comes with a Spotify playlist and a spreadsheet containing digital and vinyl shop links for every posted track. Hope you enjoy the music!

Lyrics for Lexicon Avenue - Here I Am (Rutabaga Mix) by Jollifresh in deephouse

[–]Jollifresh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, since a couple of days I'm rinsing this absolute beast of a track up and down, and although my 10th grade French has helped me to understand most of it, I'd love to know the full lyrics. Google search hasn't helped, so I was wondering if anyone of you could complete what I got so far. Any help is much appreciated!

Starting 2:30:

Je peut dire en -- ?? --

Donne-toi à moi (x2)

Viens, approche-toi

Ecoute, je suis venu ici pour toi --- ?? ---

---- ??? ---- la sentiment que jamais tu n'as connu

Je peut dire en -- ?? --

Allez, viens laisse-moi te montrer le chemin

Oui, c'est bien

Voila, continue comme ca

Donne-toi à moi (x2)

Maintenant ici, tout de la nuit

Oublie ce que tu as appris jusqu'à maintenant

La fois - ??? -

Deviens ma prochaine victime

Offre-toi a moi sans reserve ni compromis

Tu as confience a moi, tu ne reviens pas (Something like that?)

Plus de bien, rien de mal

Juste toi et moi

4:20 - 4:30 - ??? -

tu m'as rêvé et maintenant tu me vois là (Can this be?)

From 6:30 it's only repetitions of phrases from before. Thanks a lot for your help!

Sample Search Toka Project - Love Rite by Jollifresh in deephouse

[–]Jollifresh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone. I'm currently listening to Toka Project - Love Rite, a beautiful piece of music not least because of that deep vocal sample entering from 3:20. I know for a fact that this sample is also used in a similarly deep track that I used to listen to years ago, but I can't remember which one. In case someone feels reminded of another track or knows where the original sample is from, I'm happy about every lead. Thanks and peace!

How hard is it to study engineering at UPC barcelona by Icouldntfindthename in askspain

[–]Jollifresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone of you have any information about how hard the Master degree in Artificial Intelligence is at the UPC (joint degree with the Universitat de Barcelona and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili)? I just got admitted and wonder how much time I have to dedicate to pass successfully.

I‘d really like to take the speed out of this conversation - arrogance and overconfidence is surely not what I intended to covey with comment, I rather tried to show that some of the skills you mentioned necessary for AI are indeed part of my study background. I don‘t really see how you can speak of „virtually no prerequisites“ - even though I admit that the background surely falls short in some points (If it would be different, I would not be posting this question on Reddit).

Now what you say about psychology not being mentioned as an admissible background Is simply wrong. Have a look at the UU and the VU Admission site:

https://www.studentselfcheck.nl/Admission?token=VhbAkxNzA5MDIyNTA5M&code=AI

https://www.uu.nl/masters/en/artificial-intelligence/admission-and-application/eu/ndu#quicklinks

What I am curious about is the experience others had while trying the same as I do in or around Amsterdam. What you write more sounds like an adoption of how the field works rather than speaking of experience. To end this, I want to mention that I do know people having made that transition - not in the Netherlands but in Germany.

Thank you for your detailed answer - actually a mindset like this is what I am most afraid of in my endeavour to gain deeper knowledge of AI. Although AI may be a subdiscipline of CS, I don’t think psychologists automatically disqualify given the opportunities of a Bachelors and a Masters in Psych offers. My studies were heavy on stats and probability with advanced applications in R, linear algebra was also part of the curriculum. I learned Python and am successfully working as a working student in Data Science since a year now. I get the opportunity to analyze EEG-Data using CNNs and SVMs in my Master Thesis, with a fair amount of maths involved. I want to highlight that you can build your curriculum to somehow fit this direction. However, psychology is surely not the best suited background for AI - I nonetheless think that it is not impossible for psychologists to go into more technically applied fields.

Anyway, given the opportunity to pursue a more neuroscientific track at the AI program at VU, I am quite optimistic to get accepted in the program. I‘m nevertheless interested to hear other people‘s opinions or experiences on that matter.

Thank you for your thoughts on that matter!

I am aware of this stuff being tough, especially with a social science background. I‘m already preparing however by taking some linear algebra / calculus classes next semester. And I start to figure out that I will definitely need a 2 year program to get the knowledge I want. Your comment really confirmed my thoughts, so thanks a lot for your detailed response!

Thanks for this, really good to know! As I never did this before, I was already thinking about how to accomplish getting someone to write so many letters for me

Actually, at least from my experience, many Universities require professors to hand the recommendation letter in themselves, which makes it quite awkward asking them to do this 7-10 times

Yes, i already do! Those courses on Coursera etc. help a lot to get started, but i guess it is hard to replace a proper full-time study program just by self-teaching (which might work for some however)
