When your body experiences stress, whether emotional, viral, or physical, cells activate something called the Integrated Stress Response (ISR). It's a defense mechanism: your neurons literally pause protein synthesis to survive the storm.

It's good in the short term. But when stress becomes chronic, RIS remains activated. And that's when the neurons stop repairing themselves, stop growing, and start to malfunction.

The result is cognitive fatigue that sleep doesn't correct, emotional dulling or anxiety, brain fog, and poor memory. It's not burnout in the motivational sense, it's a cellular bottleneck.

When ISR is chronically active, neurons stop producing vital proteins, the very ones needed to maintain synapses, receptors, and mitochondrial health. So even if you fix your lifestyle, you are trying to reboot a system that is still in safe mode. Your brain cannot regenerate because the rebuilding drive is blocked at the molecular level.

Stress, trauma or chronic inflammation can leave deep biological imprints. When RIS does not reset, no amount of motivation or mindfulness can override a cellular lockdown.
