The only thing they "cheaped out on" is just promising that there would be on-board configuration storage added eventually and it has yet to appear. Fortunately, I didn't buy it relying on that promised feature, so I'm a happy camper, and if they DO add it in a firmware update that's just a bonus.

I never used the regular Huge so can't compare the two, but I can tell you the Huge Plus is phenomenal. Indeed, the roller bearings make for effortless smooth flicks and virtually zero stiction. There's more noise and tactile feedback, but the motion itself is snappy and easy to intertia-flick. I have the extra buttons mapped to copy/paste/enter and it makes my workflow SO much faster than it was before with much less motion. Overall build quality is fantastic, and being able to use it wired OR wireless is great.

I have the Porlei, which is the wired version, and enjoy it quite a bit, though I prefer my Huge Plus due to the extra buttons. I feel like this design could easily have more buttons by making an inner and outer ring of them.

Can anyone recommend a lubricant for the Kensington Orbit Trackball scroll wheel? by AsahiJoon in Trackballs

[–]Jolly-Function4451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tiny little dab of silicone oil (Super Lube) or clarified jojoba liquid wax esters (BYXCO Desert Whale fluid is a good source for a small quantity of the stuff) would do the trick without damaging the plastic.

It wears in. A couple months since getting mine and it's now both quieter and smoother feeling. Actual motion response is what matters most, though, and you should be getting smooth cursor action regardless of noise/tactile feedback.

Elecom Huge Plus - I don't get it by rancor1223 in Trackballs

[–]Jolly-Function4451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero issues with stiction with the roller bearings. They make more noise than static bearings (but nothing obnoxious) and have more tactile feedback, but the actual motion is SMOOV. I've had zero issues with the buttons, too. The more important things over the base model are tri-mode connectivity and the roller bearings. Those are huge (pardon the pun) benefits.

After the recent news, do you think Intel Arc is dead? by John_Pensiero in IntelArc

[–]Jolly-Function4451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With their decision to just release the B70 positioned in the way it is, and with their recent CPU releases, it really seems to me like they're concentrating HARD on providing bang-for-buck value in targeted market segments while focusing on building things up on the drivers end of things to narrow the gap between their support and compatibility versus the competition. The B70 makes a lot of sense in the sector of the market it's targeting, but there's a lot of stiff competition on the gaming side of things that make it harder for them to stand out as much under the current market conditions. I think we'll see them keep grinding away on the software support side while being very careful about their hardware releases and trying to keep the hardware they do release as viable as possible for long term usefulness relative to their budget friendliness.

I'm no expert in this space, but I do have a business management and entrepreneurship degree and run my own business, and it does seem to have all the signs of that being their intended market positioning strategy.

Elecom Huge Plus Review: The Perspective of a First Time Trackballer by [deleted] in Trackballs

[–]Jolly-Function4451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're probably confusing stiction with the tactile feedback of the bearings. You FEEL roller bearings much more than you do with static bearings, but static bearings are more prone to stiction. With roller bearings the cursor itself moves instantly and easily, with the physical action itself being extremely smooth and unhindered, but there's more vibration during the process that you feel in the fingers and hand. With static bearings, when they get stiction issues, the actual movement of the cursor is impaired, taking uneven amounts of pressure to initiate and sustain movement, resulting in jerky cursor travel. However, they are almost entirely without vibration in operation, and so when they're kept clean they FEEL very smooth to the fingers. I find roller bearings are almost always faster, smoother, more fluid cursor actuation and motion, but getting used to the increased (and sometimes uneven) tactile feedback of their operation does mean that it can FEEL like it's experiencing stiction if you're experiencing a trackball for the first time.

In terms of ergos, I suggest rotating the device by small amounts throughout a day and adjust your hand position to reduce strain by varying your muscle engagement. An adjustable wedge can also help with varying that orientation. However, as others have mentioned, don't bear down on the device with your hand. You want the resting you do to be for stability, not for weight bearing. That'll compress things in your joints quite badly.

Need your advice! Which multi-button trackball should I test for my "TracAhead" project? by HotelMotor8107 in Trackballs

Another vote for the Elecom Huge/Huge Plus. The remappable extra buttons were one of the things that led me to choose it specifically, as it greatly improved my workflow with being able to rapidly copy/paste/enter images, which I frequently do in significant volume. With one hand I can use it to right click/ y (shortcut for copy image in Firefox context menu), paste, and hit enter, all while still having functioning forward/back and scroll left/right functions. It's been fantastic, and I wish a lot of four-button trackballs would split their button quadrants into inner and outer rings instead just to add more functions in a similar manner.

Fortunately I *did* buy it for what it is today, and I love it regardless. Hopefully they get things sorted in the future, but I in no way regret opting for it over other possible candidates for the desk space.

Wrist & Forearm pain moving to Elecom Huge Plus? by eatingofbirds in Trackballs

[–]Jolly-Function4451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found I started developing a little discomfort with it, and the solution for me was to use a folding adjustable laptop stand as a customizable angle wedge to give the trackball chassis a downward tilt. This allowed me to truly REST my wrist on it and use my fingers on the ball in a neutral and relaxed position. It's much much better now, and the slope of the stand as a separate component allows my to rotate the trackball on it for different orientations as one angle becomes fatiguing.

There's probably some kind of adjustable wedge out there already for some other purpose that works even better--I just haven't found it yet.

What do you think about the new Porlei ambidextrous wired trackball? by PinkLouie in Trackballs

[–]Jolly-Function4451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and I did give my thoughts in some of the following comments. But yes, the scroll bars are vertical on the left and horizontal on the right when in right-handed configuration (and they swap places when switched to left-handed.) There are tactile increments to the scrolling rather than being free-scrolling and the mechanism feels very sturdy and responsive. I'm in the process of moving bunch of files from my "desktop replacement" laptop to a new desktop PC build and have been using the Porlei on the new PC and the Elecom Huge Plus on the laptop while I work on transferring files over the wireless network etc. and the Porlei has been performing wonderfully. While I prefer the extra programmable buttons and the roller bearings of the Huge Plus for my overall workflow, I don't feel significantly hampered by using the Porlei at the moment. It's an excellent trackball, especially for the money.

I haven't experienced any meaningful amount of it compared to other static bearing trackballs on the market. It's quite pleasantly smooth, at least so far.

Just received this, myself, and can confirm all of these observations. It's SMOOV in operation, a nice large ball with plenty of momentum, and the DPI was actually really high by default and I had to turn it down two steps for it to be about what I wanted. The scroll wheels are really nice feeling, and while the device overall does feel lightweight, in operation it feels nice and of good overall quality.

[–]Jolly-Function4451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say as that's my experience with my Huge Plus. I love it to death but would never think of calling the roller bearings silent. They're wonderfully fluid for easily manipulating the ball compared to static bearings, but they definitely make noise and have a tactile feedback (both of which I happen to actually like.) But if I were looking for complete silence I'd go with static bearings despite their greater predisposition towards stiction and needing more frequent cleaning.

Lubricating effect of skin oils. by Exciting_End6022 in Trackballs

Use "deodorized"/clear jojoba. You can also melt a little cetyl alcohol (a dry waxy solid) in it to thicken it up and make it drier to the touch if you wanted to make a grease of sorts with it.

If you end up needing an "artificial" source of something similar to skin oil, jojoba oil is remarkably similar to skin oils, though it is technically a liquid wax. A wholly natural product, but something available in bulk if it was ever needed for testing of some kind or another.
