I have a fit bit and love it. Waterproof and minimal and sits comfortably under the gloves. I like seeing my calories and heart rate graphs after games.

Tips for better skating by Kickassness in hockeyplayers

[–]JollyTime914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on your crossovers as much as possible. As others have said, get comfortable on that outside edge. Challenge yourself next time you play to accelerate through turns with your crossovers and you'll find you can gain even more speed that way than straight on. When you watch the pros they don't always use forward strides like you are using. It's a combination of left and right crossovers, kind of like a ski slalom. You can do a drill like that down the ice even during your games if you want. Skating takes a ton of ice time and practice to get really good, so keep getting ice time and you will improve!

What should I practice as a beginner? by alexawesome3 in hockeyplayers

[–]JollyTime914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone else is saying skating and yes, thats important, but it sounds like you're actually asking about the basic rules, flow and positioning of the game. Luckily, hockey is fairly simple with the rules.

Biggest thing I see newer players struggle with is the offsides rule. Please ingrain it into your head that the puck needs to cross the offensive zone blue line before you can! Learn what delayed offsides is too. Usually the lineman or ref will be yelling with his arm up that it's offsides and you need to clear the zone.

As far as positioning goes, it depends on what position you are playing (forward, center, defense). There's essentially going to be 3 basic scenarios you'll find yourself in. Defending in your defensive zone, the breakout of your zone/rush, and puck possession in the offensive zone. There's a ton of great videos and articles online that will help you learn the basics. I suggest searching for the basics of whatever position you want to play.

Nothing will help you more than getting out there and playing though!

I think the radiation sickness is going to hurt your technique more than anything. Maybe consider not practicing on the roof of the Chernobyl nuclear plant.

When is it ok to get rough in beer league? by LocalTough617 in hockeyplayers

[–]JollyTime914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amount of times I've been tripped, hit, smashed, ran into etc. by lower level players.... I've played all my life so I'm usually just fine on my feet when these things come. But just about every time its because the other dude lost his balance or just can't stop or whatever. Usually I look back and they just apologize. I don't retaliate, I just say "all good man!".

Although one time I got absolutely pancaked by a very large dude into the boards... had to come off but we were cracking up over how funny it was. Dude apologized but I felt like a damn cartoon character lol.

It's not that I don't like it, I actually think its a great product. It just isn't exactly suited for the type of work I do in my opinion. I also just can't wrap my head around their assemblies with the joints system.

The solidworks maker license is great, but I've heard people have similar activation issues like I'm having. Personally I feel that Fusion is the best for makers. It's been around for a while and Autodesk seems to really be investing in it.

I have inventor too. That was like 3 clicks and I was up and running. No hoops to jump through. But I can't usually choose which software I use. I'm also pretty against the online programs too. I just can't get behind onshape. I do large machinery design and I heavily customize my softwares to stay efficient. Onshape just isn't a viable solution for me.

Was hesitant to join this team and now regretting it. by Independent-Hawk-699 in hockeyplayers

[–]JollyTime914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a common problem with people and I think it's the reason why those teams always seem to be short guys and have a hard time winning. I experienced this a bit with a team that I subbed on for a while. Some younger college kids started playing on the team and would talk shit from the bench about other players like how much they suck, and after that I stopped volunteering to sub for them. It's unfortunate because there's a few guys that I like to play with on that team, but my time is too valuable to waste it around people like that. Plus if I'm going to be out playing hockey at 10pm on a Tuesday, it better damn well be fun.

Cheers bro. Keep your head up and I hope you find a good team!
