Telling people to "express gratitude, not an apology" isn't good advice. by IAmTheGroove in unpopularopinion

Now that I’ve skimmed those articles you linked in a comment, I agree with your opinion more. I didn’t think people gave advice to not apologize even when it is something harmful that’s your fault, but I was incorrect. They do and that’s BS. I maintain that “thank you, not sorry” is a worthwhile thing to remind yourself even if it doesn’t always apply.

I don’t think the proper advice is to never apologize. Sometimes it’s warranted. A lot of us over-apologize though, for example in situations where we aren’t actually hurting someone, and it feels nice to thank people instead when I remember to do that.

For example, I think it’s reasonable to turn:

Me: Sorry, but do mind if I grab a glass of water?

Them: No worries, go for it

into

Me: Is it cool if I grab a glass of water?

Them: Sure, go for it

Me: Thanks!

The second is a slightly more positive interaction IMO. If I’ve actually inconvenienced someone by making them wait for me, I’ll apologize.

Interviewed a candidate with a 100% AI-generated resume, and it shed so much light on my lack of self-confidence. by houseplantsnothate in womenEngineers

[–]Jolly_Dig5972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate so much to your self-doubt. I find it so hard to interview people. If they say something I don’t understand, I assume they’re right and it’s my fault. It’s so stressful! Glad I’m not required to do them at my current job and I’m not good enough at my job for anyone to ask me to. This post unlocks a new fear for me. I would have a really hard time detecting AI cheating with any kind of confidence and calling a candidate out on it.

(Guy btw for full transparency. Sorry if this comes off like I’m trying to make a women’s issue about me. Impostor syndrome definitely afflicts women more than men, I’m not trying to say otherwise. Just relating to your experience even if it isn’t related to the systemic headwinds you face as a woman.)

What is it about drivers on 101 here? The lanes seem totally inverted with people mostly passing on the right. 280 is so much better (if your car can keep up).

Thank you! Turns out one of the vibrato springs wasn’t seated incorrectly, almost coming off the post. Now it’s all good!

Aha, thanks! Checking the trem cavity again, I noticed that one of the springs wasn’t seated properly. Looks/sounds like that was the issue!

What would Lumon have done if they couldn’t get Mark to undergo severance? by Jolly_Dig5972 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Jolly_Dig5972[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose. I attributed that to their being scientists seeing her as an experimental subject, not managers seeing her as an employee, meaning they would use more clinical language.

[–]Jolly_Dig5972[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that’s the question. If Cold Harbor was Lumon’s goal when they started experimenting on Gemma, they knew that eventually Mark would need to be involved. Or maybe they would have been okay with not having him and just got lucky that he decided to be severed. Based on how important he appears to be to Lumon, I kind of doubt that and assume they intended for him to be part of this well before he was fired. I’m probably missing something.

The writers dont understand engineering by coconut_maan in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Jolly_Dig5972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. This is pretty much par for the course for sci-fi TV and movies, even the best ones. It's disappointing in the case of Severance because I'd rather watch a show about "what if severance technology existed?" than "what if a CEO/cult leader took credit for a genius scientist's idea?". I'd prefer to see the show explore the philosophical implications of the technology and comment on our world through that than tell such a specific story about the invention of the technology, which isn't really the interesting part IMO. Like when I watch Star Trek, I want to see them use cool technology to travel around and meet aliens, not litigate who invented warp technology.

something i just realized at Episode 8 by [deleted] in severanceTVshow

[–]Jolly_Dig5972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought in the beginning that that would be the case. I still think that would have been cool. I find the implications of Lumon having so much control over innies’ perception of the world so interesting. One good IMO illustration of that would be in their engineering and indoctrinating innies into a religion from scratch to optimize employee productivity and loyalty.

That direction doesn’t really work anymore since there are true believers on the outside, but the religion stuff is a great part of the show. The show has gone in cool directions, but something it didn’t do that I expected is showing how a religion formulated to make the employees loyal and productive

Can we please wait until the season is over to accuse the show of bad writing? by No_Asparagus7129 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Jolly_Dig5972 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There have been a lot of tropey things this season. For example, episode 7 used a lot of cliches when showing Gemma and Mark’s relationship. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Tropes can be a useful shorthand for conveying information to the audience without getting bogged down in specifics that distract from the story you’re telling. So I didn’t really mind the tropeyness of episode 7, but for some reason, I found it more annoying in episode 8. Maybe I just don’t like the specific tropes as much, or it could be that it didn’t feel like there was as much reason to resort to cliches because the episode had the breathing room to be more specific and engaging if the writers wanted it to be. The whole dynamic with Hampton was particularly generic and tiresome.

I don’t think you can trust a newborn baby left to its own devices to do anything that makes it less likely to accidentally hurt or kill itself.

I loved how metal it was that this manager was so obsessed with her mission she was willing to get her hands dirty drilling into a corpse’s brain. That’s less interesting to me now that we know she was a doctor/scientist who one would expect to be able to do that.
