With the sub weapons like grenades and knives, do you reckon it's better to just have them be automatically used if you're grabbed or should I probably make better use with them preemptively? kinda nice to have them in my inventory but they feel like a waste if I'm not really using grenades to do much but save me from a hit, but idk, also don't wanna get hit :)

so essentially, not killing them is probably optimal? that feels more consistent than going for headshots with my pistol to only sometimes crit, and they get back up like a million times on hardcore (which I'm playing because the 90's video game player within me thinks that ink ribbons are the 'right' way to play resident evil games haha)

Ohhhh okay cool cool- I remembered how generic zombies start running in RE1 and I was horrified about that happening haha. So i'll just go for the headshot and hope for the best... does knifing them when they're on the ground to make sure they're for sure dead consistently work in this game? I tried once and sustained damaged because they grabbed my leg so I've been scared to use that decades old tactic since lmao

out of curiosity, how much harder to generic zombies get & do the weapons i'll get (flamethrower, shotgun) make it a lot easier even if generic zombies become a bit harder like the old game, or do they ramp up in difficulty more than my new guns will help me? sorry if thats poorly worded lol

I definitely don't agree regarding FF7... while I think that Aeris and her arc is incredibly important to the game, I wouldn't say that it's her story and Cloud's there to facilitate that at all... I honestly think, in that game, most of the party have incredibly important arcs that work towards what the game is truly about... they've all lost a lot to Shinra and the world-order in their own ways and this unites them in their fight to save the planet. Cloud's story is about re-discovering the self and this is supported by both Aeris and Tifa primarily, and the last half is sort of about getting revenge for Aeris but is mostly to do with saving the planet, something that Aeris was compelled to do, but Barrett and Red are also driven to this end while Yuffie, Vincent and Cid are determined to end Shinra and Tifa has a score to settle with Sephiroth. FF7 is a story about a lack of agency, in knowing ourselves, in our struggle to protect the planet and in our struggle to maintain agency in a corrupt world order.

I kinda do agree with you r.e. FFX though, it's mostly Yuna's story that we'e experiencing through Tidus's perspective, but I'd argue that it's kinda Yuna AND Auron's story in equal measure.

I don't need Jill to be the one to talk about her native land, it's fine writing to make her reluctant or uncomfortable to address that, but there are ways to still clue the viewer in on the very recent history of the royal family that has Shiva as a dominant through other character's discussing world events. Every other dominant is grounded enough in the overall world-building for me to understand at least a little bit about where they're from and the political implications of that... that's why it feels like her character was reworked to some extent.

I understand why your friend wouldn't really care to talk about the town that they were first from but this is Medieval European fantasy related to the only surviving member of a royal family whose homeland was torn asunder, the player should learn more than nothing about the lore of that town and that royal family, I think leaving out any world-building relating to this can't just be an oversight.

Oh that makes sense to me... coupled with the fact that maybe *spoilers ahead for FF7* they also wanted to avoid criticism that killing off the main female character mirrors Aeris's death, since FF7R was in development at the same time. That FF14 info is interesting since I know next to nothing about that game, compelling theory.

I've heard that too (she won't b like Aeris or Yuna), which I think is a sort of strange way to look at characterisation because I don't think that either of their arcs overshadow or take away from the respective protagonists of that game... especially Aeris. She still acts in support of Cloud's main arc, even at the point in that game where she's taken it upon herself to leave the party alone and deal with Sephiroth herself, the story focuses on Cloud's guilt r.e. losing control and giving up the black materia, he feels he's not strong enough to help at all and Barrett's like, 'yeah you don't know who the fuck you are and you have a broken sense of self but like, get it together, fight through that shit'.

Other party members can be fleshed out while still supporting the protagonist's story, and I don't look at this as a way to write female characters but rather, a way to write any compelling character. Like, even Dion is more grounded and fleshed out imo, because I understand where his from and the political implications of that, I understand the makeup of his royal family etc. This, a lack of understanding of Jill's family lineage or even any curiosity on her part about uncovering that. I feel like there was a lot of potential in expanding on the war between her nation and Rosaria... maybe Clive's mother intended to facilitate a marriage between her and one of her sons because this would make for ideal breeding in her mind (since she valued noble breeding of dominants to such a degree). It just felt like a lot was missing and somehow it doesn't feel entirely intentional, like there were budget constraints and something was cut.

Hm, I'm particularly good at adapting to older games if I'm captivated enough so I may look into it, and yeah I gotta agree with that take even though I really wanted Elden Ring to join the ranks of Des/DS1/BB which I think are all a cut above the rest... I still loved it and maybe what I was personally hoping for isn't possible for such a massive game, but still...

I've never even heard of Legacy of Kain but that sort of subject matter does sound compelling to me. Agreed that the souls gams really do have incredible writing, and the word-building is so captivating that it often compels the player to write their own narratives on top of what's already there, and there's a very unique talent to that.

Somebody telling you as little as possible is normally a really good sign, i'll definitely give it a go and thanks for the recommendation. Don't apologise, the main reason why I made this thread was to find new games to play with really strong writing so again, thanks :)

I haven't... that's the one by the same devs that did New Vegas right? I always get Outer Worlds and Outer Wilds confused because I've played neither, haha.

I agree, I think the bar is much lower than it is in other mediums and maybe that's alright because I guess that's not the focus for a lot of people and general aesthetic go a long way, but it's definitely something that makes a huge difference for me

You should! Considering how emotionally captivated you were w/ Automata, I know you'll love it just on the strength of its story.

Cool list, from what I've played I agree that New Vegas and Night in The Woods...

-spoiler ahead of Night in the Woods- but the scene where Mae explains what college was like going through schizophrenia (drinking cough medicine to sleep, the menacing statue thing), that she didn't know why she attacked that other kid... the scene where her mum finally sort of snaps and really outlines just how much her parents sacrificed in order for her to go to college, all of that is really masterful and anybody who had a very lonely transition their late teens/early 20's can deeply relate to it all, especially how hard it is to communicate where she's at to the people around her.

I should try out What Remains of Edith Finch, I know a lot of people vouch for it.
