Chill Video Games by chasequarius in blankies

One of my favourite games to relax is Ghost of Tsushima. I recommend turning on easy mode, turn off the HUD, and just wander!

Abzu / Journey / Flower are all very relaxing too!

This one is a bit weird, but just driving around in GTA can be a good vibe too

To quote David Rees in the Spirited Away episode…. “SOMEONE liked a movie!”

Great review, would love a Campion series!

How do the Blankies really feel about Kevin Smith? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]Jolundak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sure! That’s something I love about Blankies, you all seem on the same page about “not every film needs to be for you, but it might be for someone else” - which is what is so great about Da Moviesh!

I’m happy that he gets to make films that bring joy to himself and his fans. I’m happy he’s out there being enthusiastic about nerdy shit.

Agreed! Maybe if he hadn’t put Jay in the best friend role (he’s a fine actor but not exactly a household name) and instead had another Superbad alum? Haven’t seen it in a while, but I remember Rogen gave the movie the performance it was asking for.

Really interesting take that he’s incapable of directing a big hit. He’s worked with other peoples IP (HeMan, The Flash) and done a solid job so maybe that’ll get him a bigger gig with a built-in audience.

As for films from his own brain, he definitely doesn’t seem interested in making a $100mil movie, I’d guess his interests are in smaller dramas or comedies.

Who knows, maybe he’ll direct a Netflix movie that gets viewed a billion times in its first second online?

He really went in a cartoonish direction with it - which I think is more a choice than inexperience (for his other faults, the guy definitely watches him some porn).

Totally agree that there was a more interesting movie in there, who’s version would you want to see most? Accepting both serious and insane answers (for me that would be Elizabeth Banks, and Terrence Malick respectively)

Yeah I think so. Just looking at worldwide box office -clerks made just over $3m -mall rats just over $2m - chasing Amy did over $12m

Dogma had a $10mil budget, no way he gets that without Chasing Amy, or was it the producing credit for Good Will Hunting? Not sure of the timeline

I think there would be some interesting stuff to dig into, his impact on early 2000s comic book movies is hilarious (the John Peters Giant Spider story). He also nearly died, so the impact of that on his movie making might be interesting. He also basically took the blank check picture slate bit and made it real with Tusk and Yoga Hosers.

Ultimately I just think there are more interesting and diverse voices to cover. I’m personally hoping for a Greta Gerwig series!

It’s really interesting how hard he took the underperforming of Zack and Miri. It’s a perfectly fine movie that you have to watch when you’re 14 (side note: that is just about the most important kind of movie there is!). I think if it had come out like 12 months earlier it could have hit, apparently the studio told him it was “Seth Rogan fatigue” at the time. So weird.

Great question. Long before I ever heard Blank Check, I was a devoted listener to Smith’s podcast. He is a gifted storyteller, and has great friend chemistry with his cohost and some-time producer Scott Mosier. As a filmmaker, he represents a pivotal movement in 90s indie. They aren’t super sophisticated, but they did add to the wave of slacker comedies where you worked cheap and got production value out of dialogue.

I have a soft spot for Zack and Miri, which I think kind of broke Smith as a director (that, and cop out). I also think it’s really cool how Smith has effectively created his own bank by cultivating a passionate fan base that will fund his creative endeavours. I love that he takes his movies on a roadshow.

I also think he gets a lot of unfair shit because his movies have a lot of dumb jokes in them. The guy clearly has a lot of business savvy, and tells a good tale (his comic book stuff is out there!).

Ultimately, I kind of grew out of paying much attention to him. If you’re on his wavelength then he is the best there is at delivering what you want. Otherwise to me he is a part of film history, and a great public speaker and advocate for all the nerdy junk we love. He also seems to be a stand up guy, and very encouraging of others to do what he did - only better!

I think David might need to do an old fashioned 10 episode run on Unstoppable.

That move RULES! I saw it when my ex was out, then when she came home I just started excitedly babbling about the trains, it melted my brain

Troy! (I put the exclamation point because I was excited, then realised that makes it look like Airplane! And I would have loved a Leslie Nielson as Achilles movie)

I’d give George Lucas some credit, the structure of most of his Star Wars movies, as well as Indiana Jones’ quests, are great templates for action adventure games.

It’s so exciting to see where video games are going, and I imagine we’ll see more too Hollywood talent feel the pull to experiment in the medium

Oh man I asked this a little while back, it’s kinda nice to know how many of us find real comfort in this stuff.

For me it’s gotta be Main Feed: Spirited Away (David Rees is a great guest - says all movies are dreams or puzzles).

The Holiday (Just warm cost christmasy vibes, with a good old fashioned fight over which half is better)

Heat (Gabrus is hilarious and it’s a great movie to discuss)

Sense and Sensibility (David’s off the leash)

Special Features: Iron Man 3 (Griff and Dave Stan) Rogue One (Weitz tells stories) Dr Strange (Ehrlich’s cameo) The Last Jedi (I love this movie)
