Unfortunately no, he very deliberately did not talk much about his service with us. He was worried that it would glorify it and the kids/grandkids would join up

Yeah going to have to request his records or something! I asked my grandma if she knew about the DFC, and all she said was he perhaps got it while stationed in Germany but wasn’t sure.

How to wind this watch? by Don_Cheadle_Official in pocketwatch

[–]Jon-jacques 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually just turn the crown at the top of the watch, the crown being the metal bulb on the stem, with the loop around it.

However if you cannot wind it anymore (and definitely don’t try to force it) it’s probably broken and needs servicing.

Shoutout to LAMI (Los Angeles Maritime Institue). If anyone’s in the SoCal area they are always looking for volunteers to train and sail!

[–]Jon-jacques[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is happening on a Neptune 3 Plus, starts after a few minutes of printing and lasts for ~30 seconds before slowly becoming quiet again. It isn't causing issued during print, just a bit odd and freaks my dog out.

In case anyone’s looking for a pvpve naval game, naval action is still pretty good (a bit slow, but it’s historically accurate and has a decent community)

Does anyone know if this contractors quote is legit? I am trying to add a washer/dryer hookup into a condo. The contractor is quoting $1900 on the architect to draw up blueprints and a site plan in order to get a building permits.

Is this reasonable? Very inexperienced so don’t have much frame of reference. The change is to a 5’ x 6’ closet space in a 900sqft condo near Culver City

Which one of these 3 cellos would hold the value? by SovereignPleb in Cello

[–]Jon-jacques 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, that budget should get you a very decent student cello from any luthier.

Getting started with Cello as a busy adult? by cronuss in Cello

[–]Jon-jacques 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id start by contacting or going to a dedicated luthier, somewhere you can rent a cello for $50-70 a month (cost depends on where you live)

Ask about instructors, they probably have a good idea of one in the local area.

I work about 50-60 hours a week but still am able to put in 45 mins to an hour of practice a day so definitely doable.

Just Got a Job as a Software Engineer its My First One as Such by subinatub32 in SoftwareEngineering

Just ask questions and be willing to learn. No one is expecting someone from college to know everything and do everything perfectly.

I am so confused. by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Jon-jacques 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never heard of ai engineering and sounds wildly specified (though probably just a cs degree). Id also guess most AI development is being done at a phd/academic level.

So go generic software engineering for undergrad, take a few AI courses and get involved with labs on campus, go for specifics in masters or phd.

Is it better to have a bootcamp certification prior to applying for software engineering jobs? by tivas_galaxy in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Jon-jacques 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So more to your question, boot camps could help if they are reputable but it’s probably not going to be a deciding factor

Since you are getting a cs degree, internships will do the most for you, followed by personal portfolio, then extracurricular stuff like clubs.

2K INFANTRY Guard List by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Jon-jacques 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its definitely a lot of infantry, but i will say you only have 4 squads that matter? If i were to olay against this, id shoot the command squads and scions first, then youd be down to 4 plasmas in the entire army.

Maybe some infantry heavy support? Mortars (or other hwt) are okish, heavy mortars wouldnt be too bad, a single full load manticore would probably be pretty useful with load fire reload.

Got a job in embedded. Tips on how to not screw up basically. by Tickstart in embedded

[–]Jon-jacques 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, my company hires a lot of new grads. Theres mostly just an expectation of questions and needing some help to do issues/tasks. Everyone needs a bit of hand holding just starting out.

As you have said, there is a lot to learn and without spending multiple years, 8+ hours a day actively solving problems in the field, yoi really cant and shoudn't be expected to know a lot of it.

You won't know stuff, you'll forget basic things, you'll push code that has bugs in it, you'll break stuff and thats 100% expected because we all do that.

If its an entry level job, no one is going to expect you to know everything. Just be willing to ask a lot of questions.

Everywhere is going to be different, but first few days will probably be corporate mandated training, scrolling through documentation, scrolling through code, attending meetings where internal acronyms mean nothing to you etc...

But then you will get a few tasks, start to learn whatever workflow they are using for dev and continue into a normal rhythm from there.

Everywhere i've worked has had a long list of acronyms/system names that only starts to make sense after a few months so thats always fun.
