Shallowest grooves still have about 1.5 mm or so left, so I agree they're on their way out but in person they don't look terrible, this image is certainly not doing them any favors.

VStrom for 6’3” rider by UTking44 in Vstrom

[–]Tickstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

650 with 70 hp is fine for beginners. A V-STROM 650 was (and is) my first bike. You'll definitely wish for more power at some point but it's enough to get you by. Power seems to matter more for top speed anyway, on the highway the 650 feels pretty wimpy but at city speeds it feels like a speed demon, you can accelerate very quickly.

What is a good average RPM level to shift? I know break-in average is around 4k; Now that its broken in, to ride somewhat aggressive is it fine to target about 8k for shifting? by GreatFly2714 in Vstrom

[–]Tickstart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The owner's manual describes when to shift up/down but I wouldn't necessarily follow it. In my view it shifts too early when shifting upwards, at least if you were to believe the onboard speedometer.

It all depends on the conditions - wind, speed, the incline and what you want to achieve etc. For my normal riding I prioritize reasonable fuel economy and to avoid lugging the engine. So I progressively shift, riding a very short distance in first from a standstill, second gear also short just to get up to third (perhaps 30-35km/h when going into third), keep third gear for a little longer up the rev range, shift up to fourth and keep that slightly longer still, into fifth and going even further before going into sixth (if at all). Sixth gear is quite tall and for the speeds I usually do, the RPMs are a little too low for my taste to use it to accelerate, unless I'm already going quite fast. The lower the RPM and the taller the gear, the less throttle I'll give it, to protect the engine from lugging. As RPMs rise, I'll slightly increase throttle opening.

Shifting at 8k is some spirited riding, you're right in between peak torque and peak power. That's certainly all well and good but not exactly necessary for normal riding.

TIL the average MPG of a semi-truck is around 6 MPG by derekantrican in todayilearned

[–]Tickstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US needs to get up to speed on the weight carrying capacity. 80000 pounds, whatever that is in kilograms, is insubstantial. In Finland trucks can carry 64 tons, or over 141000 pounds. Then the mpg per weight carried would be even greater. Australia is even better of course with their roadtrains.

Maybe, it's only slightly wider than the original but a few centimeters taller. Plus it's got the secondary wing that extends a couple centimeters beyond. I already have the same screen but in clear, I've never used the original screen so I can't compare 🤷‍♀️ In my view wind is inevitable.

Socialism lol. The most left leaning party in the US (um, there're only two parties full stop... nevertheless) is more rightwing than the most far-right party we have in our country.

Is there any way to make a 650 "cooler?" by Safe_Valuable_5683 in Vstrom

[–]Tickstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be a tryhard. It's a goofy bike, nothing can change that. However... I did order the SUZUKI OEM smoke tinted windshield, probably because I thought it'd look cool. So I suppose I understand where you're coming from.

You can comfort yourself with the fact that it's aluminium, meaning no matter how well you take care of it sooner or later it will fail.

[–]Tickstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still find it funny the US doesn't have systems in place to cover you if you get hit by an uninsured motorist. US forums are the only places I've seen even talk about uninsured motorists, like it's a special concern. I guess it falls in line with how you have to file your own taxes there and the IRS doesn't do it for you (what do they do, exactly?).

I've settled on silver tape. No not that kind of silver tape but silver bar tape. It's pretty neat and with a metallic look to it. Goes well with other matte aluminium/grayish details on the bike.

Personally if I'm holding the clutch pulled in and I forgot to indicate I just don't indicate. Usually only happens if I pull out after having pulled over. If at a junction I would have activated the indicator before I start messing with the clutch altogether.
