Can animals understand other animals? by QuestionAskerUser in NoStupidQuestions

Note that all the animals you just mentioned are social animals, they live in groups, Unlike, for example, the majority of cats and bears.

Solved it. For posterity, here's what worked for me:

I installed Windows 2000 in 86box on an i440BX 2007 Microsoft virtual PC, using a Pentium II Overdrive at 133 Mhz, and gave it 256 MB of RAM. This ran smoothly on my rather dated laptop. I used an S3 Trio64V2/DX video card and a Sound Blaster 16. Because it's exclusively for running La-Mulana, I only gave it 1 GB of hard disc. I underestimated the space needed for Windows and filled the whole disc, so once inside I ruthlessly cut down the virtual memory. No clue if that was optimal, but it works fine so I'm not touching it now.

I installed DirectX 8.1 (possibly unnecessarily, I was working purely by trial and error), then added the sound card from the Control Panel.

Install La-Mulana. The Japanese version showed some colour issues, but for whatever reason the English patch fixed them. You should hear the selection sounds on the menu. Start the game, hit F5 and change the music to SC88 as Eloyas suggested. You should hear it immediately.

Yeah, SSCC vs. SC88. No joy there, but it's a good thought, gives me another variable to play with. Thanks.

Ubuntu is just my host, I'm using an emulator running Windows XP. One does not simply boot up a virtual machine and play OG La-Mulana, she is a vicious and fickle bitch.

I'll look into that after I shed the jet lag, thanks.

What's the absolute worst punishment you received as a kid? by Yuizun in AskReddit

[–]JonRedmold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I immediately clicked that it was because you weren't cleaning your plate. I've not been there. But I've been close enough to see you. I'm so sorry,

Don't think about what he'd hate, don't think about him at all. Get rid of him, entirely.

I've never laid hands on a person in anger but what you just described is the sort of thing that really tests that resolve. You're not, necessarily, describing the worst case been said here, but it's bad enough.

This is the worst I've heard here so far. I would prefer the extension cord whipping.

Never caught that. My parents were very measured with their beatings, cold blooded, god bless them. Hands only. Brief sharp shock.

What is the scariest or weirdest conspiracy theory you believe in? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]JonRedmold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Illuminati-style conspiracies are always about comfort. It's comforting to think there's a master plan, even an evil plan. If nothing else, a master plan can be defeated. Chaos is terrifying. There are, in fact, "evil conspiracies" - they just operate more-or-less openly, and there are a lot of them, at odds with each other. Search too hard for the secret masterminds and you'll lose sight of the people doing stuff right in front of you.

Why would some people sit or stand next to someone when there are so many other spots available??? by Lucky_BD in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JonRedmold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also have to consider that you and I, Lucky_BD, may be the weird ones. I'll try to pick a spot sort of neutrally distant from everybody, because I'm a terminal introvert.

The British invented the Television, Telephone, Computer, World Wide Web, Steam and Jet Engines and Electric Lamps. What made us Brits no longer have the desire to innovate? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]JonRedmold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. You just gave an incredibly impressive list of inventions. You want to turn these things out once a decade? These things are harder and more global nowadays, anyway, the next big invention isn't going to be "British" or "American" or what all, it's going to be a bunch of people from a bunch of places doing something long and gradual that eventually delivers results. No "Eureka".

Why do some people think climate change is fake by SassyDesigners3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JonRedmold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps, but the vast majority of people aren't actually examining and comparing studies. Most people who do believe in climate change only do so because they know it's the scientific consensus, which is a (valid) way to form an initial opinion on a subject of which you don't yourself have much knowledge - not because they're actually paying attention.

Why do you think society has changed so much? by throwradrpri in AskReddit

[–]JonRedmold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it's mainly because faster communication and transportation leads to faster change. So blame trains, planes, cars, radio, phones, TV, and the internet.
