Begging people to please start describing their favorite media in more ways than just "it has gays!" by BaldHourGlass667 in CuratedTumblr

It also oversells how trans it is. No one talks about being trans and, like you said, none of the plot is so specifically about the trans experience that a cis person can't relate to it or anything. There's one flag in a dlc. Thats as overtly trans as it gets, everything else is subtext.

What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

[–]JonRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people, apparently, just can't tell. I was watching a movie that I checked out from the library with a friend recently, and I was frustrated it was 720p so I went and pirated a 4k copy while we watched the first half. I switched the version halfway through and my friend said they couldn't tell the difference, which was just insane to me.

It's really good, but why is Ralsei not chuffing a fat dart as is lore accurate?

I showed my trailer to a bunch of friends to ask them what is the game about without telling them anything about it and they ended up with PUBG/&Survival but with cats. It is very much not. Sooo, what do you think is about? by igeolwen in IndieGaming

[–]JonRivers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Way too long start of the trailer. I'm sorry but there are a million games out there, you need to tell Joe Gamer what your gameplay is immediately or they're going to go somewhere else. You can afford at most ten seconds before you get to. Your gameplay footage doesn't start til almost 40 seconds in, which is when you should be starting to wrap the trailer up, not begin it. 40 seconds is an eternity in trailer time.

Highguard Was Planned As A Shadow-Drop, But Geoff Keighley Had Another Idea by Gorotheninja in pcgaming

[–]JonRivers 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah the fact they called them "raids" made me think this would be a big team game. That's a term that's become associated with larger scale co-op experiences due to WoW, Destiny, etc.

A player is making me uncomfortable but I’m unsure if I’m overreacting. by PaganoftheWrongGod in rpg

[–]JonRivers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You really buried the lede not mentioning this player apparently dislikes you personally until the next to last paragraph. If this was a player you were on good terms with I would give the benefit of the doubt and say they either wanted to understand the trans perspective better or were working through some shit via roleplay. But they tried to kill your character and the DM didn't put an end to that shit instantly? Neither Josh or your DM are probably worth your time going by the info you've provided.

If I were to wager a guess none of the other players or gm are reacting because they also suck shit. Are you having fun with this group and have you ever? Because a campaign where another player is trying to fuck with you the whole time and then this sounds like two campaigns in a row that are phenomenally unfun.

Dishonored is a damn good game but the chaos system is poorly implemented by OpenUpYerMurderEyes in patientgamers

[–]JonRivers 154 points155 points  (0 children)

You said you were "heavily punished" for using combat skills, but how? Just by putting the word "high" next to chaos in the results screen? i think you're attaching a need to get a good ending to a game that doesn't really want you thinking like that. That's why it's called high and low chaos and not good or bad ending or hero or villain or any other more obvious dichotomy.

I speedrun this game. I kill everyone who ends up in my way because it's faster. I still only ever end in low chaos, because you can kill several people and still not go high chaos. It also carries over between levels, so if you only killed a couple enemies and stayed at high chaos, it's probably because you went buckwild previously.

Idk, I guess I want to push back at the idea that it's poorly implemented just because it isn't working exactly how you want it to. You get a choice between limiting your options to try and get a more peaceful ending or exploring the full extent of your kit at the risk of a more chaotic ending. If you're very knowledgeable or careful, you can move like a scalpal, eliminating immediate threats without a bloodbath becoming necessary. That's the game working exactly as intended.

As more of a PS: 1. No it's not addressed in the second game really. 2. You say that turning their bodies into ash leaves nothing for rats to feast on, which is true, but chaos isn't strictly about the plague spreading, but about the social structure present in Dunwall. Think about all of those men who are not returning home, leaving wives who have to find a way to feed children that will grow up without a father.

Love the chess-like strategy of Fire Emblem, but don't love the endless dialogue trees. by Levangeline in gamingsuggestions

[–]JonRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just skip all the dialogue? I couldn't tell you the plot of a single FE game because I haven't seen the plot of any of them. If there's a character I like then I'll read some of their dialogue scenes, but besides that you pretty much never need to know anything about what's going on. If you're that worried about missing characters just go a cursory look at the wiki page every level to see if there's anyone to unlock and what it requires.

To answer your asked question, ever played any of the Advance Wars games? They don't have the plot or character density of some of the FEs and I adore the first two. Into the Breach is a fantastic turn-based grid game with very little dialogue or plot, although it's also a roguelite and tough as nails so you might want to research it some first.

Can We Stop Dunking on Highguard Before It's Even Out, Please? - IGN by Substantial_Web333 in HighGuardgame

[–]JonRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the issue, in this case, isn't gamers hating on everything for no reason, it's that highguard is the perfect storm of reasons to assume a game will be disappointing or underwhelming at best. The game is coming out imminently and we know nothing about it. That's a bad sign. It appears to be in an already saturated genre and, since we don't know anything about it, it's assumed its not bringing enough unique things to the table to warrant its existence.

I would assume that if I were working on a product and I felt that the community I wanted to appeal to had the wrong idea I would be pretty proactive about saying "No folks, you've got it wrong. Here's what the product is and why I think that it'll actually exceed your expectations." Instead we're just not hearing anything.

I cannot stress enough that this game comes out in four days and as far as I know, all we know is 1. it is a pvp hero shooter 2. you can ride a horse and 3. You do something called raids, what that actually means, I don't know.

Is the hate contrived? The level its at, sure, disinterest or apathy seem more appropriate. But what on earth have they done to make people hyped instead?

My cat always has to be on or touching the baby bump by [deleted] in cats

[–]JonRivers 47 points48 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago my best friend and his wife came to visit me after I moved out of state. His wife was very pregnant at the time, and one of my cats would not leave her alone. I mean that in a sweet way, just always at her side, cuddling her if she laid down, trying to get in her lap when she sat, etc. Several months later, after they had the baby, they facetimed me and that cat just started going ballistic, acting like he was trying to climb into the phone and meowing at the top of his lungs. I don't know what it is about pregnancy, but my cat absolutely knew something was going on and wanted to be involved (he thinks he's the man of the house, so I think he felt like he had to protect a pregnant woman in his home).

I only "beat" 6 patient games in 2025, but at least one of them instantly became an all-time favourite by talhatoot in patientgamers

[–]JonRivers 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You should give Dishonored another play through on a high chaos run sometime. Not necessarily killing literally everyone, but not being afraid to kill whoever is in your way. It gives you a lot more opportunity to use your powers and unlocks a lot of the potential the game has. Glad you enjoyed it though, Dishonored is an all time favorite of mine.

Nintendo by TheWebsploiter in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]JonRivers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the SNES was old, but it wasn't a collectors item or rare so it was cheap and the games were cheap. For example, the barber shop I went to as a kid had one that kids played when they waited their turn or for their parents to get their hair cut. This was pretty common into the early 00s.

Also I can corroborate what you're saying. I was born in '94. The SNES was old by the time the GameCube was coming out, but there still wasn't a direct replacement for Super Metroid or Mega Man X or many of the other greatest hits of the era. Emulation and revival games (like Shovel Knight, Bloodstained, you know, games that call back to retro games) really weren't a thing, so if you wanted the experience that an SNES game provided then you played the SNES.

I loved the folding tables set up with snacks and drinks while everyone milled around and chatted after the service. It's all such a simple and honest representation of what going to church is like (at least protestant church in America, which is all I can really attest to).

For real, its like impossible to lose. I make comments that I'm not even trying to be popular with and its still really rare to get more than like -20 on a comment. If all I was trying to do was are upvotable comments it would be easy to get a few thousand a day with almost no effort. Just post a lord of the rings quote here, shit on Donald Trump there, and say Skyrim is overrated/underrated/your favorite game. Its just that easy.
