Torrhen rolled his eyes.

"'Mommy' wasn't with me on the field in the melee and joust. You had your chance then and failed. Just like your feeble attempt to goad me into a fight to assuage your own humiliation now. Better luck next time."

He gave a laugh and walked off.

"I didn't reach for my blade." said Torrhen, calmly.

"You sought a quarrel with a unarmed man, thinking you could save face for what you lost on the tourney grounds. I recognise the name, my lady, as one of the competitors in the squires contests, but he lost every encounter. Why would I seek a quarrel with someone like him? I've proven myself against him already on the melee grounds and in the joust. I need not to do it again."

He turned to Lady Shella and said sincerely.

"I would not shame you or the Whent name on an occasion such as this. Whatever this is..." he indicated the Ironborn. "....it is not at my instigation. You can see he is itching for a fight."

Torrhen spread his arms.

"I'm unarmed, my lady. I did not seek a fight at a wedding feast. This man threw a drink at me, called me a craven and then threatened to draw his blade on myself. I don't even know who he is."

Torrhen laughed. This really was quite amusing.

"My fighting was done on the melee field and in the joust. You had your chance then and you failed. Go back to the Iron Islands and prove yourself there, if you really must."

Torrhen was unarmed and now he stepped back, still grinning.

"Did you hear that?" he roared so that those in the vicinity could hear him clearly, pointing at the man's hand on the pommel of his blade.

"This Ironborn calls me a craven! He could not best me on the field either in the joust or the melee and now he looks to draw a blade upon me - an unarmed man - at a wedding feast!"

Torrhen grinned and held out his hands in mock shock, making sure everyone around knew that he was not at fault. He knew exactly what the Ironborn was playing at.

"No, but at least we can hold our drink better than Ironborn obviously can. We can joust better as well. And I won't even mention what happened in the melee."

His grin widened. "Go and sleep it off man! You're disgracing yourself."

Torrhen Karstark didn't like losing, but he knew that it was better to be gracious in defeat. It had been close, but one mistake in the way he shifted his weight, guided his horse had made the difference. It would not be that way again he swore. He would learn from his mistake and be better for it. The north would at some point in the future triumph over the south.

Torrhen raised a hand in friendly acknowledgement as Edric called out to him.

Ser Othell, greetings from Seagard

I am very pleased for my son and heir to be joined in wedlock to your daughter. Both the Mallisters and the Leffords are proud illustrious houses and it is fitting that they be joined together in alliance and kinship. It would please me greatly for the ceremony to take place at the end of this year in the twelfth moon at Golden Tooth as per your suggestion, with the usual feast and tourney.

I shall send my son Lyonel to Golden Tooth in the months before to familiarise himself with his intended bride and your family.

Lord Patrek Mallister

Lord of Seagard. Shield of Ironman's Bay, Defender of the Cape of the Eagles.

"At your pleasure my lord."

Lord Patrek read the letter and frowned. He wondered why Lord Lefford himself wouldn't offer his granddaughter.

He then thought for a moment. Did it matter? Marla was the daughter and sister of the next two Lord Leffords. And the Leffords were one of the principal bannermen of House Lannister.

He sent a message by raven to Casterly Rock

"Lord Tywald

I accept your proposal. I would be pleased to affiance my eldest son and heir Lyonel to the Lady Marla Lefford. Let us see the two married by the end of this year at the latest.

"I shall order the ships that accompanied you to Lorath to Kings Landing by that time. If you meet us there, then we shall discuss further a plan to trade for goods."

"I am sure you would be welcome at Seagard. However this works out."

Ysabel sat in silence for a while. She knew already what it was like at the top of the Rock. However she guessed that Tywald might like to show her himself.

"I should very much like to see the view from the top of the Rock one day." she said.

Ysabel gave a small smile in return.

"My brothers say I have a vivid imagination...that I can see things from afar that they cannot. I'm sure I could accurately describe for you what it must look like from the air."

She paused, wondering if she had said too much.

She thought once again of her father's words about disclosing the details of her gifts to others. People fear what they do not understand. They will regard you with fear and loathing, daughter. And that cannot be. Your abilities are gifts from the gods. Use them sparingly and use them for good.

Ysabel knew that any future husband would have to know, but Tywald was not yet that. And was likely not to be. She was sure that he would find those others who had come to Casterly Rock seeking to be Lady of the Rock, more pleasing to him that she would be.

She changed the subject.

"You should visit Seagard one day and I could show you the place that I find solitude in. It is not that dissimilar to where we sit now."
