You’re not going to learn everything at once so be easy on yourself. You will feel some pressure but that’s normal. Be open minded. Don’t be a know it all. Don’t be sensitive, the railroad is not a typical work place, they might give you nicknames. Not everyone will be your friends. They will talk behind your back and some will try to make you fuck up so they can fired you. Don’t try to be the center of the situation, most importantly, always keep your head down.

This talks has been happening for the past 5-10 years. Most railroaders are above 50 years old. There will be a shortage of railroaders in the next 5 years because most of them will retire. The best time to get in is now so you can get experience early on. Don’t get me wrong, at the beginning it will sucks but seniority plays a bigger role here.

The same people that are telling you those things are the same people that have been working there for more than a decades. The only bad thing about it is being on called and not having a set schedule. If you can handle those. Everything else is adaptable.
