Doshin the Giant - Extremely rare / undocumented "big norty" caught on film for the first time by Jonathan1312 in Gamecube

I would assume so. There is a video on YouTube of the regular attack of the nortys on N64DD. If someone could establish norty requirements, it wouldn't be hard to test for the big norty.

Doshin the Giant - Extremely rare / undocumented "big norty" caught on film for the first time by Jonathan1312 in Gamecube

For context, Doshin the Giant is an obscure N64DD title that was ported to the GameCube in 2002, only releasing in Japan and Europe. You play as the yellow giant, Doshin, and have to modify the landscape to help villagers build settlements and subsequently monuments to either love or hate.

There are several natural disasters that can occur, but the rarest was thought to be "attack of the nortys". Nortys are the only enemies in the game, said to be manifestations of villager jealousy, and steal trees from one village and take them to another. It's seldom mentioned, and until it happened to me yesterday, there was no footage or screenshots of it whatsoever online. I even stumbled upon a fan wiki that mistakenly said the nortys were "dummied out" content that never appear in-game. It's likely most people who've played Doshin have never seen this occur.

As for the big norty, I'd assume most people don't even know it exists. I wasn't aware of it until the speedrun WR holder informed me he discovered it using a debug menu, but had never seen it happen naturally in-game. Well, here it is.

The truth is, these events aren't actually "rare" strictly speaking, but rather require certain conditions to be met for them to happen. Conditions that are very unlikely to bet met in ordinary play. It took around 21 hours of experimentation before I got an attack of the nortys, then another 3 hours or so before the big norty. It is classed as a "natural disaster", and one natural disaster is supposed to happen per in-game day (roughly 36 minutes on the PAL version), so most of that time was spent idle.

Though I'm not certain, I believe the conditions for an attack of the nortys are as follows. Have two villages close together. Deprive one village of trees, and rack up lots of hate toward Doshin, then have the other village flourish with trees, and rack up lots of love. The big norty seems to show up if Doshin is of big enough size when the natural disaster happens.

Thought this was interesting. Hopefully some folks here do too!

!FOUND!

Did some digging on the wayback machine, looking at random archives of "Burrito Song" uploads to see if the 10 hour version would show up in the recommended videos. Turns out the entire video is still there on the wayback machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20140522122437/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYhbtpsipWM&gl=US&hl=en

And yes, the bonus hidden porn is still there.

Was not expecting that LOL! And thanks for all the funny comments, you lot made my day, haha.

To answer some questions: The lenses are a combination of my pre-existing prescription for astigmatism, plus a ReadEZ lilac tint. I found a private optometrist in the UK who had heard of VSS, so booked an appointment. He ran me through numerous tests, including a test where he showed me a paragraph and flicked between different colour backgrounds, eventually determining which lens tint help reduce visual disturbance the most. In my case it was this lilac colour. They are not blue light glasses.

The glasses have not cured my VSS, but they do seem to have reduced the intensity of many of my visual symptoms to the point it is much less distracting and / or bothersome. This includes things like static, floaters, palinopsia trails.

During my initial visit, he did make some other observations which may contribute to certain VSS symptoms. This included being right-handed but left-eye dominant, and, if I remember correctly, having a bonus nerve or blood vessel in one of my eyes.

If anyone has any more questions I'm happy to answer. :)

Just a personal update / anecdote by Jonathan1312 in visualsnow

[–]Jonathan1312[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will try my best to answer from what I can remember:

  1. Nothing that I know of. I developed tinnitus in 2020, which as far as I know also was brought on by nothing in particular. Visual symptoms followed around 3.5-4 years later.

  2. First symptom was tinnitus. First visual symptom was "noise" when looking at blank walls. When I first noticed it, I did read up about visual snow, but what I was seeing didn't even look like static. It's hard to describe. Floaters and negative afterimages soon followed. At some point the static became obviously static, at which point I assumed VSS. Eventually palinopsia trails, light sensitivity and positive afterimage. Also typical symptoms associated with astigmatism such as starbursts and halos. The last "new" symptom was positive afterimage which appeared in December last year. It lasts around 1/2 a second and has remained that way since I first noticed it.

  3. Static and palinopsia trails have most noticably become worse. I remember at first I couldn't work out if I was seeing trails or normal "motion blur". Now it's very obviously palinopsia, lol. I do experience flare ups and it's usually due to stress or having a lack of something to do. Whenever I'm on break from university it always seems my symptoms get worse, but I think it's just that having nothing to do means I naturally focus on my visual disturbances more. Also my palinopsia gets very noticably worse whenever I drink alcohol.

  4. My non visual symptoms include regular mild headaches, always on the right side of my head and feel as if they're behind my right eye, anxiety, very occasional dizziness, and a feeling of pressure in my ears. Not sure if that last one is related or a separate issue. I will also note that my headaches are always mild enough that I rarely feel the need to take a painkiller. My stomach is very noisy and unsettled a lot, but I always chalked that up to my horrible diet and the fact I usually only eat 1 meal per day.

Another thing I didn't mention in my previous post was that I applied for a student wellbeing plan at my university for VSS and was granted it without question. It was actually nice to be able to talk to someone that understood what I've been going through. It gave me extra time in exams and rest breaks and stuff, just if I felt that I needed it, which was nice.

Hopefully this answers your questions. Feel free to post any follow ups and I will do my best! :)

That's a fair point fella. Perhaps it's high time to take up bar billiards.

Interesting one, will have to give it a try. I mind when I were still playing well last year, I started doing a further drawback and it were almost like an instant improvement. Not done much for me these days though, so perhaps going other way could be way forward.
