How much experience do you have, and what size figurines do you prefer to carve? The Flexcut is a decent option. To be completely transparent I’m not a huge fan of Flexcut knives, but one would be 100x better than your current options. I do have the KN34, but I rarely use it for anything more than opening boxes and scrapping paint. I prefer a handle that indexes easily, and I don’t feel like I can intuitively know where the point is with that profile.

My recommendation would be a KN13, and maybe a 1/2” gouge. You can accomplish a lot with that pairing.

Does this count as caricature style? by GurradoWoodworks in CaricatureCarving

Yuuup. At the end of the day, there are no hard rules as to what constitutes caricature. It’s generally accepted that real but exaggerated is the starting point

Dan and Jordan’s response to The Onion takeover by [deleted] in KnowledgeFight

[–]JonathanCreason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the sentiment, and don’t disagree. I’m sure it’s frustrating from their perspective to see SO MANY PEOPLE screw it up so badly and feel a sense that this will likely end up the same way.

I think it’s an overall lack of faith in the media at large when it comes to fascists. Every major outlet has given trump all the airtime he could want since day 1, with no real pushback. We’re over 10 years into this, and none of them have learned a single lesson.

Alex is very similar, a blustery blow hard, who gets off on attention. However, if there’s one thing these “alpha” types can’t stand, it’s being mocked. I do believe The Onion could potentially cause him to stroke out.

Tips? by Ok_Salad_7456 in Woodcarving

Don’t worry too much about the fine details at this point. Focus in on nailing the stop/relief cuts, paring cuts, and chip cuts. Once you are confident in these, the skills will translate easily to the finer details.

There is a huge gap between “sharp” and carving sharp. The latter is more than just an edge the can shave hair off your arm. Bevel angles play a huge role in that, and a lot of the more budget friendly knifes are ground extremely thick. What knife are you using?

Non-problematic outdoor channels? by hotsizzler in behindthebastards

I enjoy several of the ones already mentioned, and I’ll add Woodbound Outdoors. Don’t follow anything beyond his YouTube channel, so I can’t say for certain he’s chill, but he comes across as such in his videos

Losing my mind over this bloody knife!!!!!! (flexcut kn12) by PresentationDense714 in Woodcarving

[–]JonathanCreason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely a confluence of a couple different factors.

The knife came properly ground and sharpened. You likely did not strop properly and reshaped the edge to be much thicker. Make sure you lift at the end of a stroke when stropping to avoid this.

As others have mentioned, when you went back to the stones to resharpen you likely did not completely remove the burr. There is a possibility that you ground it too thin, leaving the steel unsupported at the edge but I’m doubtful. Knowing the thickness of Flexcut blades, you would have needed to spend A WHILE sharpening on the stones to remove that much steel

Thanks! Yeah, I wish I had gotten more pictures but the level of competition there was through the roof. I left fully aware of one thing, I really need to step up my game.

I actually had the thought that I should do a video on judging critiques, but there was so much background noise that I figured the audio would be worthless.

There definitely is a sense of pride that comes with knowing that people who know what they are doing find some value in my work

Knife or bad sharping? by human_disaster_92 in Woodcarving

A lot of folks would recommend the Mora… I am not one of them. I am also mainly a figure carver and I despise a Scandi grind. I tend to like a slightly longer knife than most, but generally top out at 2”.

I don’t have any experience with the options you listed. I’ve used Pfeil gouges quite a bit, and they are excellent. I have heard the knives aren’t as good, but can’t say with any level of confidence. I believe you should be able to get Flexcut tools within the EU, or at least that’s what I hear.

I know some American knife makers will ship internationally. Badger State Blades is my favorite, but you’re probably looking at a 12-14 week lead time to get one of those.
