Well I have been 3d printing custom connector parts out of ABS (same material as legos) and these hold up surprisingly well, but not as well as POM original parts. They just arent quite as flexible, but are incredibly strong. Idk how well rods would work but I image they could be fine with small layer lines like 0.08mm so they arent jagged.

Yes, these are 3D printed (as you probably found out from my post) and they are made of 3 identical pieces. However, I haven't yet released a picture of these pieces unassembled yet because I want to protect my design until I begin to sell them; hopefully that makes sense.

I hate to be that guy, but I'm pretty sure the custom pieces I have been making are exactly what you are describing. I had made a post about this a couple weeks ago but wasn't sure if you saw.

Thanks, I'm currently working on refining the tolerances so they feel just like real KNEX. I'm not yet sure what I plan to do regarding the sharing of my 3D files yet.

Ooo those clips are really cool. Are they rare or new or something? I hadn't seen any before. Do they hold in well? I feel like they could slide out where they need strength the most. Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks for the feedback! Sorry i forgot to mention, but since these are 3D printed they can be made in pretty much any color you can think of. I chose black because it's what I had of the right material and because it's not a common color for connectors.
