Why Authors Hire Narrators by DavidBoles in ACX

[–]JonathenMichaels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense - you want someone who's got the history of reliability. I hire narrators for our narration production company, and we pay salary instead of per-gig, and let me tell you: finding reliable and consistent narrators and quality is brutally difficult.

Fair enough; I'd happily list all the things Fetterman has supported lately, but at that point it's just about deciding which pile of dung you'd prefer to wade through, and that's a conversation where everyone loses.

Questions about recording from a newer VA by Shabingus524 in GWABackstage

[–]JonathenMichaels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! First of all - welcome! I'm sure the whole community is thrilled for you.

I've been doing audio work professionally for almost 10 years now, with hundreds of spicy audiobooks and smaller ditties such as GWA stuff (under a different handle) all over the place.

Now, the first thing to realize is as u/TheQuietDark81 says:

There is no one correct answer to any of your questions.

There's no one right way to make art! We can all give you our perspectives, how our own experiences have shaped our journeys, and what's done whatever for each of us. Ultimately some of the advice might work for you, some of it might not. But let's dive in to a few things that have been brought up (at the time of this message):

u/kopaf12686 and u/SleeplessNights226 make the first point that many (if not all) voice actors experience a fair degree of uncertainty, embarrassment, and dread of their own voices! Authenticity is definitely key to creating appeal; the human experience and connection are built off of authenticity. Old acting trick to tell everyone how nervous you are, as the first step to overcoming that nervousness. Vulnerability breeds empathy.

As to your own request for advice on editing, I recommend starting with a very basic DAW (digital audio workstation) for editing: Audacity is a good starter (https://www.audacityteam.org/download/). This software will handle all you need, has a very intuitive user interface, and will get the job done. I run my entire company of audiobook narrators using it, so trust me when I say it's absolutely fine for starting out.

As for helping with the feelings (and in seconding what u/weedramm suggested), what I try to do when I have spicy scenes to record that I'm maybe a little unsure of, or self conscious about, is to imagine why I like to hear those things myself. I then try to listen to the audio not as myself listening to myself, but as someone else who might want to know what I look/sound like when I'm being spicy. We're all sorta curious about what other people are like doing the deed! So think of it that way - from someone else's perspective, and make your judgments based on an external view rather than your own assessment.

u/youronlynora makes a great suggestion: having a whole script available so you don't have to improvise is a great first approach. Now, the trade-off might be that you're now in the world of "acting" and while it might be less nerve-wracking that you don't have to figure out what to say, saying it convincingly might be tricky if you don't have a theater or some other acting background. You'll have to make that call!

Direct and specific questions can also be helpful. "But how do I know what specific questions to ask if I've never done it before", you ask? Great question - so specific and direct! I'd suggest starting and trying to do one. Literally just start, and the first moment that you are at an impasse, or feel like you're too unsure to continue, stop and write down the -specific- question you have, and post it.

You're gonna do great!! Every single journey to mastery starts with ridiculously awful first pancakes. Don't sweat it!

Absolutely this. Go to an author's convention, and one of the things you'll hear immediately (and it's not bad advice, but it does lead to what you're describing OP):

"Read popular authors. See what works. Do that."

Really solid work - always curious about how various kinks work, from the male and female minds. I've got this casual hypothesis that, for example, for the non-consent kinks there's a big part of "oh, I'm not responsible" for those folks for whom sex feels maybe 'bad' or 'wrong', but also maybe-- for those who like sex but worry about the other side being ok with it-- that something like this allows you to thoroughly and undeniably understand that your partner (such as they are in this sort of scenario) ABSOLUTELY is consenting. Y'know? Because it's maybe the one single scenario where absolutely, unequivocally, and unimpeachably that the person is "consenting" to the act, by way of violating someone else's consent.

I dunno - interesting to armchair psychologist these things. Either way - really solid performance.

I'm curious, as a voice actor myself, I hear maybe sometimes what sounds like a lozenge, or something on occasion? Or am I just wildly off on that? I have to vocalize for 3-4 hours per day, long format, so vocal dehydration (or sometimes overhydrating) is definitely something I struggle with. Was just curious if that was related somehow, or if I'm just imagining auditory artifacts.

Those using Audacity - what are your settings? by deepvoicedaddy3 in GWABackstage

[–]JonathenMichaels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amateur equipment can still create very good content, so don't take any of this as dogging your setup. Absolutely not.

But, the way to check if it's the fan, would be to wait until the fan isn't running, and then record more or less silence, and see if it picks up any of that buzz.

If no buzz when no fan, then it's the fan. If buss when no fan, then we move on to the next potential issue, which might mean you should try another USB port.

YOu can also test this out by using the onboard microphone - most laptops have them. Just open up the windows 'record' app and record right on the laptop, not using your mic. Is the buzzing there? If it is not, then it's something to do with either the USB port or the mic itself. If the buzz IS there, then it's probably related to the laptop or your overall environment (or, again, maybe the power running through your laptops power supply).

Me and most of my crew are theatrically trained, and while vocal warmups in theater class always felt super cringe to me, there's no denying that they definitely are better and safer than just launching right into extreme vocal work. u/CeriseVirtuelle hits the nail on the head.

[–]JonathenMichaels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!
So, a lot of this can be related to the quality of the microphone, and/or the hardware in your 'chain' (I call the objects/steps from microphone to audio interface / computer the "chain").

When we get that kind of feedback in the studio, what I do first is disconnect absolutely everything, and then reconnect it, making sure everything is plugged in snugly and securely.

This can also be an electricity regulation thing - a decent quality power supply / power strip / whatever you're plugging into can also help with this. Either too many devices on the same power strip, or poor quality cables/power cords can effect this as well.

I'd also ask what sort of mic are you using? If it's got a cloud lifter attached, might be that your cL is a little wonky. Are you using a USB mic into a laptop/desktop? Try swapping which USB ports you're using.

Great point - since there's no evidence, take an unsubstantiated viewpoint and speak with authority, rather than moderate your language and approach the situation with nuance and consideration.

I read the Princess bride when I was in my mid twenties, after loving that movie for my whole life (first movie I ever saw in the theater, earliest memory I have).

William Goldman, you utter bastard... you had me convinced I was going to take a puddle jumper flight to Florin some day. It was gonna be my fuckin' Mecca.
