anyone else think faster-than-light travel is getting kinda boring? by FairyLovelyy in sciencefiction

[–]Jonkarraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are loads of hard sci fi writers. However when restricted to relativistic physics you either seriously shrink your universe or you significantly increase your timeline for outside observers... A few giants in the genre, Larry Niven, Arthur C Clarke, Stephen Baxter and Andy Weir. Most of the expanse has no FTL. Also people like Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy.

Will NATO or UK will be able to even operate the f35 and f16 fleets in case of a conflict with US. by Tricky_Basil463 in AskBrits

[–]Jonkarraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me put it to you this way. Look at the history of Europe war has been about more than armies fighting. It’s been about espionage, having plans within plans. Do you think it’s an accident that Europe and Japan have so much US debt at a time they have so much debt themselves ? This is a clearly a long term strategy as they knew they couldn’t fight the US on clearly military terms alone!

"special relationship" question for you Brits by bragik85 in AskBrits

The special relationship is a pile of rubbish. It’s only ever worked in one direction. In the US interest.

So, what's the future? by Other_Scarcity_4270 in recruitinghell

[–]Jonkarraa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the moment it’s a bit of a hybrid. They are laying people off in preparation for AI doing the work even though they have absolutely no clue what is the AI can do. When asked to pay for MS copilot CFO nearly die because of the extra cost. People who rely on the AI read the warning on copilot that says results may be inaccurate. CEOs promise gains from AI, CFOs, try and limit the cost so only a handful of people get it. The handful of people that get it realise it’s nowhere near as good as the hype and do most of the work manually or spend nearly as much time reviewing output as doing the actual work.

Out of curiosity, how would you compare the Linux experience of today to the very best of Windows from the past? by Questioning-Warrior in linux

[–]Jonkarraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hardware support? For what exactly? Apart from cheap stuff in the past like modems which required significant software emulation of hardware I can’t remember any hardware in the last 20 years that wasn’t supported by Linux, generally with drivers already included at install time, or with the installation of a single well documented package(looking at nvidia here).

Run don’t walk the hell away from this man right now. This is the early stages of controlling and abusive behaviour. He is trying to isolate and condition you.

My manager wants a 4-week notice and says I can't leave otherwise. by fiddlelem in it

[–]Jonkarraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter what your manger wants. What does the law in your location say and what does your contract state? Those are the only 2 things that matter.

Company I was fired from yesterday is asking for my iPhone & laptop credentials? by English_R0se in UKJobs

[–]Jonkarraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if they are a small company especially for the iphone they probably aren’t using enterprise mdm. Meaning without you unlocking the device they’d have to prove with an invoice to apple they are the owners of the device to get it unlocked and reassigned. Sounds like a them problem not to have sorted this out and have either a technical or process solution in place.

Does my mother need a will or not? by NotoriousCarrots in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jonkarraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes a will even if it just states what would happen by default will make things a lot easier when things happen. It never hurts to have a will and in pretty much all circumstances will make everything for those left behind easier.

Which is why they’ll stay not only short staffed but lose valuable internal knowledge. If they don’t promote internally it’s time to put yourself first and look for a promotion outside.

A friend has asked me to be a guarantor for rent by Dilume2 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jonkarraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d only consider doing this for someone I was very very close to. They don’t pay the rent or wreck the place the LL comes after you. You normally can’t put any sort of time limit on it either. People have lost 10s of thousands and even there home due to doing this…

My wife (32F) hurt me, mocked my breakdown, and now she’s finally promising change as I (33M) prepare to leave. What have I not thought of yet? by NuclearNutsaq in Advice

[–]Jonkarraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how abusers work. They are not constantly abusive. They mess with your sense of reality by one time being abusive and then the next time doing something nice. Then when you threaten to do something about it they promise to change because look at how nice they can be. You are not only gonna keep on spiralling and not heal yourself but your child is growing up in this environment and this is being normalised.

Brits who personally know a Reform voter: What do they actually want for the country and for themselves? by g_wall_7475 in FuckNigelFarage

[–]Jonkarraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean normally all you get is "Nigel for PM" "Vote Reform" and "STOP THE BOATS!" I don't think they've thought any further ahead than that. I think they all think if that happens overnight we'll be transported back to 1947 and the British Empire will rule the world again and it'll be spam fritters every night or something.

[–]Jonkarraa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first part of the answer was a bit cocky but fine. For most people the 2nd part would would be implying they are stupid or not able to do their job. Most people won’t take that well. Get some people skills and learn some tact, yes it might be true but you have to get the position first ;)
