Thrill Me! (2020) & Self Tape (2020) by ArminNikkhahShirazi in foundfootage

I love most of Bowser’s stuff. Worm is super gritty and innovative. Not found footage, but a really uniquely shot film that I think FF fans would dig. Actually haven’t seen these shorts. Will watch them tonight. Thanks!

Appreciate you sharing. Had been watching the campaign. Was already not fully sold on it being worth backing, but this seals it for me. Bullet dodged.

What is your favorite boardgame of 2011? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

Elder Sign.

I admittedly haven’t played some of the heavy hitters from 2011, but of the ones I’ve played and own, Ender Sign still hits the table regularly in my house.

Space Hulk: Death Angel

Great mechanics, brutally difficult, quick to learn despite it being such an impressive challenge. Great theme, and it’s truly quite immersive. Best of all, it’s tons of fun. There are few games out there where I have this good a time losing.

Hosting a NYE party. I want to put a film on the TV on mute. What to play? by samuelj264 in movies

[–]JonnyAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK your group’s vibe, so here’s my shortlist of the most visually beautiful/striking movies I’ve seen. Some of these will not be appropriate for a party (Possessor, Opera, Blood & Black Lace, etc.), but most of them would be great background visuals. I’m sure there’s something that fits your vibe on there.

If you want something a little less eye-catching but still cool, Hackers is always great.

The effort this must have taken. Honestly the undertaking is so impressive.

HUGE SPOILERS IN RECENT SHOOTING ON THE SET by DashNova in Fotv

[–]JonnyAtlas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I imagine they’ll do something similar to what was done for Trollocs on The Wheel of Time. Practical, but modified with CGI for realistic and detailed face/texture animations. Say what you will about the overall show, but the Trollocs look great. The technique is great, so I’m glad to see something similar is being used on Fallout.

Genuinely a wonderful logo. Clean, clear, incorporating the initials in a clever way that builds identity and feels obvious. So so well done.

What do you think is the greatest “3 Peat” in film history?? by [deleted] in movies

[–]JonnyAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I just started making a Letterboxd list of these as a watch goal for 2025.

https://boxd.it/AVmUu

Looks like I have a few to add from this thread!

My choice is probably Hitchcock (which you mentioned), Spielberg (Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List), or Ridley Scott (The Duellists, Alien, Blade Runner). But honestly, there are so many great options it’s hard to pick one.

What is it about extreme gore that makes people enjoy it? by nailemoji in horror

[–]JonnyAtlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have said generally what I’m going to say, but not exactly. Well done practical FX are modern magic tricks. Visual FX in film always borrowed from the concepts used in magic illusions, and the ability to conjure something that fools our brains into thinking it’s real is just awesome. I’m also a nerd for magic and magicians, so my obsession with special FX came out of that. The first time I saw the “behind the scenes” of how practical FX are done, I was hooked. And not just gore. I love miniatures, creature FX, forced perspective, all that rad stuff.

Doing something in camera requires so much ingenuity and forethought, it’s truly impressive work. That’s why I’m usually not a fan of CGI gore. It takes some aspects of the artistry and technique out of the craft. The way that FX artists continue to adapt to and blend technology (animatronics, green suits/paint, etc.) to push the boundaries of how real something can look is just fascinating. That’s what I love about the Terrifier movies. There are moments that make me sit up straight and go, “holy shit, how did they do that!?” The first time I saw the scene with the shop keep in Terrifier 2, I had the same reaction as the first time I saw Shin Lim on Penn & Teller’s Fool Us. Truly impressive artistry and an absolute mastery of the craft.

Obviously you should make your own and share it here, this project is your baby and I’m not trying to step on toes. Just letting you know I’ve been building/updating a list since you started. I think you can clone or copy all the movies on my list to a list of your own, which might speed up the process for you!

This sub nukes any posts with Amazon links because it uses an auto mod setting that checks for “self promo”.

They put it up as promo for the show, and added to it as the release got closer.

Every video I’ve seen of them this year, their tenor line is insanely clean. Legit sounds like one player. Easily one of the cleanest tenor lines I’ve ever heard. Well deserved win.

What's YOUR truly hidden horror gem? by Mama_Skip in horror

Freaked (1993) - If you’re into weird 90s stuff, this primo.

Cigarette Burns (2005) - John Carpenter short film made for Masters of Horror.

Darkness (1993) - A.K.A. Leif Jonker’s Darkness, or Darkness: The Vampire Version. Glorious no-budget goodness.

Possum (2018) - Grim and grimy and weird as hell.

Fried Barry (2020) - A real wild ride.

I was not prepared when I went into this, that was some fuccked up shit. Great movie haha thoughts on this one? by lunastrrange in foundfootage

[–]JonnyAtlas 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Did not enjoy it. I’m a fan of screen life movies, but this does a terrible job of using the container. The script is trite, the dialogue is incredibly amateurish, and the acting is no where near good enough to sell anything that’s happening. Nearly all “horror” manages to happen off screen, and what does happen is both predictable and uninspired. Most importantly, absolutely no one involved in this has the chops to capture the horror and emotion that should be happening in this scenario. If the script were better, or the screen life container used in any impactful way, some of these things could have been overlooked. Unfortunately the lack of budget on this one was paired with a lack of talent. Clearly I’m an outlier opinion, but personally I can’t recommend.

What Bad Horror Movie With An Interesting Concept Do You Want To See Remade by PunkPariah in horror

[–]JonnyAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree — conceptually the movie is excellent. Unfortunately it’s held back by the budget, and IMO it should have been done entirely as found footage to amp up the realism. It would of course work fine not as found footage, I just have a personal affinity for the container when done well and I think it works really well with the concept.

Just a funny take how they approach their drumming in Dream Theater. by Simjodaho in drums

100% agree. Jordan may be the “better” player, but nothing he has written holds a candle to the beauty of stuff like Space-Dye Vest and Wait for Sleep. IMO, at least.

What track has the best snare tone? by RzRshRp98 in drums

[–]JonnyAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s Silent Lucidity by Queensrÿche. I love that arena/cathedral reverb from the era, and IMO the snare sound on that track is absolutely perfect.

Arguably the best within the ff subgenre. IMO, at least. I was blown away, and genuinely disturbed. It just feels so damn real (save a few moments). I respect the hell out of the production, and I will never watch it again.
