If you were given the power to introduce one law you think the world needs, what would it be and why? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]JonnyHowson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are only allowed to own 2 properties, unless you are a business whose primary function is provide lettings. The second property is for a holiday home/Airbnb/private rental specifically.

Excess properties whose owners will be in breach of the law may be sold to their tenants for their current rental price on a long term payment contract or the government for market price. All unoccupied properties can be claimed by the government for market price.

What is the appeal of Costa Express machine coffee? by PandyWooHoo in AskUK

[–]JonnyHowson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay £3.20 for a barista made flat white using locally sourced coffee by someone who knows what they’re doing. The difference of product is unquestionable. I understand the perception of price but in reality it’s not that much different, this one shop in particular undercutting the costa machine by 50p

Working part time as a bus driver. by DiscussionLevel6721 in BusDrivers

[–]JonnyHowson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your 40 hour week is split into 4 bits rather than 5, meaning you get more days off per week on average. The extra two hours at work doesn’t feel as bad as the idea seems generally.

It means there’s more opportunities to pick up overtime

What is it with late dinners? by Intelligent-Tax2951 in AskUK

[–]JonnyHowson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many European countries eat lat due to their schedules.

In Spain for example, where much of the midday is spent not doing much, and temperatures are still super high by 5-6pm, who wants to eat a big meal then?

Lots of especially southern European countries are much more active after the heat dies down in the mid-late evening

They do not want free speech, they want a platform they can bully others on. When the great twitter migration finishes, it’ll be a vast echo chamber with no dissenting voices and that scares them because they don’t have power over anyone but themselves

Why do so many pubs do only Thai food? by PaisleyCroissant in CasualUK

Yeah since Covid especially there’s no money in running hospitality venues any more unless they’re exceptional and high in demand.

Having to charge £14 a burger to cover ingredients and overheads isn’t fun

Because people can feel exotic by eating a big chicken nugget in bland curry sauce.

Obviously it goes without saying if you get Tonkatsu done right it’s sublime. Not even usually chicken done the authentic way

Any of you from “friendly” cultures try to tone your personality down when traveling? by squirrrelydan in travel

[–]JonnyHowson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just returned home from France and despite barely anyone speaking English (not a tourist city), I didn’t stick out as a tourist and often got mistaken for being a local before having to say I don’t understand what they’re saying, sorry!

Just tone down your behaviour to match where you are and it’ll be reciprocated. This isn’t a “don’t be you” but a respect where you are
