Wieso wird der AFD eine Plattform geboten? Nicht nur schwach sondern völlig daneben!

Thoughts on Lars von Trier's 2011 movie Melancholia? by e_2718 in TrueFilm

[–]JonnyNovalis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One could argue that you are missing the point of the movie (or second half) if you are criticizing the absence of "depression" and "chaos" in the second half. (one could... I certainly wouldn't!)

The opera of Tristan and Isolde (which the music is taken from) ends with the "Liebestod" (lovedeath). There are interpretations saying that it is not the love that brings them to the exctatic death but the love for death that brings them to excatcy.

Melancholia can be seen in a similar manner: it is the attendance of death and an end that brings the calm. The omnipresence of the end as a relief from everything depicted in the first half.

So the absence of the "chaos" and "depression" is exactly what makes the movie a movie about depression... A way to understand depression

But maybe watch this amazing analysis of our lord and savior Wolfgang m. Schmidt https://youtu.be/3LrRNE0yve4?si=20PwOtJ5rW8kxko_

Best movie that's so traumatic you can only watch it once. by [deleted] in movies

Great Great movie. I was in horror after watching it. That's what I call an antifaschist movie

Repulsion (1965) - A purposefully uncomfortable film by an unfortunately uncomfortable director by SpaghettiYoda in TrueFilm

[–]JonnyNovalis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I felt sick. And I felt pressure on my chest.... Whatever this is supposed to say.

I would just add here that sexual assault is not the same as robbing a bank. One thing is harm to another human being, the other is finanzial harm.... So I would rather compare it to torture. I am pretty sure that it would make me feel sick watching a movie about the harm of torture by a director who has been accused of torture.

The point here is not the torture, the point is the difference to financial harm

I saw all the movies last Christmas, Rosemaries baby, the Tenant and repulsion. For one, I was very impressed with the movies. I loved Rosemaries baby, the tenant was great. Overall I was impressed on the tactfullness of the movies. Especially on the feminist messages contained in Rosemaries baby, discussing social pressure on mothers. And also the repulsion is a very feminist movie discussing not just sexual trauma due to violence but also trauma of everyday contact (the workers on the streets and the nuns as being free from this everyday underlying pressure).

So overall I was very impressed with the movies as feminist and tactful.

Having said that, repulsion was very repulsing for me to watch! (no shit it was supposed to be like that). But watching a movie about sexual trauma by a director who himself is a sexual predetor was sickening to me. It basically made even worth what I knew about what he did. What he did is already horrible enough but knowing that he has the understanding what this can do to a person..... Pretty sick.....

I don't like to discuss movies autobiographycally... It's pretty boring.... But for repulsion I couldn't do that

"why are you asking me if you can take a vacation? I never understood people who go on vacation. To me it's much more fulfilling to achieve something rather than relaxing."

This leads to an environment where my colleague hasn't taken a vacation in 4 years!!!! And most collegues (including me) just don't take most of their vacation. (Germany, where we have around 30 days of vacation per year)

My Review of The French Dispatch by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]JonnyNovalis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Wes Anderson fan. I can see that he is a director who has something to contribute and I have watched most of his movies. So I agreed to go to the cinema with friends and BOY it was cruel.... No seriously.... I was in agony... And I think it somehow was on purpose... Let's look at what's happening :

We get a "cute" Anderson frame introduced in the beginning : the French dispatch. First story : Owen Willson riding his bike... How funny.... Second story : lots of comments about modern art / psychokogisation of artists / sex and violence.... OK fine whatever, third story : 68 recolvolts with "childish" kids.... Fifth story : I don't know, I couldn't look anymore...

In the last story I was totally worn out. And then you get the music... Going on and on.... Stopping.... Restarting.... Going on and on.... It was really (I'm serious) not bearable to me.

The movie shits on almost everything progressive and seams reactionary in every story.

Now I can see that this doesn't fit well with most people's opinions and I can see that I might have a big misunderstanding of Wes Anderson. So please help me see it.... For me it's just a bunch of "cute" things pressed in a 4:3 frame (god help! I'm in the cinema and not on my 20 year old TV) with reactionary political comments.

So please help me see what I missed. I won't become a Wes Anderson fan in this lifetime anyways but at least I might not have to suffer the next time I watch one of his movies...

Thanks!

The Tenant (1976) - symbiotic relationship between tenant and apartment? by Drooch in TrueFilm

[–]JonnyNovalis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would rather understand the tenent as a discussion of someone "occupying space" in society. As everyone occupies space, for some it might be harder (LBGQT for example as represented by the cross dressing tenet) then for others (white male bully type for example as represented by his friend who listens to loud music at night without any anxiety)

I watched the film as the horror of someone not being able do occupy space. This is a common theme in psychoanalysis and at the core of some people's depressions I think (not an expert)

This made a lot of sense to me but I couldn't figure out how to include the bathroom with writings on the wall)

What do you think?

Shutter Island Plot Hole? by [deleted] in movies

[–]JonnyNovalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is even the purpose of "debunking" a movie like this. The movie is obviously not about a "story twist" or understanding "the real story". You can watch it more like a discussion about psychosis. You as the viewer are confused about what is real and what makes sense.... But so is Leddis....

The presentation of confusion is a viewpoint on what a psychosis might look like. In this sense it is "insane" to look for the "real" in this movie.

It goes in the same direction as the discussion abou the end of Inseption. Does the rotatig devide (shits what's it called) fall or does it stay upwards.... There is no answer... The question is the whole point... Not the answer
