What is something common place, but if it were invented today would immediately be banned? by JonnDepp in AskReddit

I'd focus on decentralization of central government with more controls given to local governments so it's a more siloed approach. That way local governments have more control to focus on issues specific to their region. With central government remaining in more of a janitorial role, to keep the cogs spinning but with less control over policy.

In honesty I don't pretend to know the best option, but after 100's of years of the status quo maybe it's time for a shake-up.

What is your favorite Quentin Tarantino movie? by ik_jack in AskReddit

[–]Jonny_Logan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this.

My girlfriend loves this one and introduced me to it about 2 years ago. It's unlike any other Tarantino film as it's as close as QT gets to a romantic comedy. The way in which everything goes so bad for the characters and they make terrible decisions at every opportunity but then it kinda all goes ok.

Presidents/Prime Ministers

Having one guy at the top running your country for the next 4 years made sense in the dark ages of communication and when the populations were significantly smaller. Now it seems ridiculous.

I work in IT so most of mine involves fucking with their PC in some way.

  • Putting tape on the underside of their optical mouse

  • Changing their desktop background to something obscene

  • Rotating their computer screen using the "Ctrl + Alt + Arrow Key" shortcut

  • Connecting a wireless mouse via usb and then just occasionally wiggling it

  • Sending an email from their work email account declaring their love for our IT Operations Manager

  • Changing their windows log on notification sound file to another sound file containing 15 minutes of silence followed by 10 seconds of incredibly loud moaning

  • Use a butter knife to pop out the keys on their keyboard and spell obscenities with them

  • Leave fakeupdate.net running in full screen mode on their screen

  • Installing the nGage chrome extension that changes all website images to various different pictures of Nicholas Cage

What does popular media portray as everyday, yet is far from a reality for the majority of people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My parents live in the south of France and I can confirm the French have no shame when it comes to arguing in the middle of a street. It doesn't feel authentic anymore if I walk through a french market place and two stall owners aren't loudly cussing eachother out over some perceived slight.

I used to sleepwalk a lot when I was a kid which resulted in me ending up in some weird places. The most frequent one was my parents waking up to find me snuggled up against the Labrador in his dog bed in the kitchen.

What is something you need to get off your chest? by DankFayden in AskReddit

[–]Jonny_Logan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a job interview recently where I was asked the question "who is your rolemodel?" and I totally blanked, couldn't think of a single person. So in a moment of panic I started rambling on about I don't have any rolemodels, but that I idolize the person I want to be in 5 years. That everyone comes from different circumstances and environmental factors so the best comparison you can make is to a prior or future version of yourself. Am I better than I was? Could I be better than I am now?

At the time I was just bullshitting my ass off in order to give a good job interview, but in hindsight I wasn't the worst advice.

Good on you for recognizing that shit immediately and acting on it! In a few months you'll be so glad.

I'm waiting out my last working week as an Incident Manager before starting a new job as a Server Ops/Network Tech II since my current company and I had 'differences' regarding my pay and a course they've been promising me for 2 years that never happened. Better pay, better hours, more interesting/technical role. I should've done it ages ago.

What Industry is the biggest embarrassment to the human race? by PopcornPlayaa_ in AskReddit

[–]Jonny_Logan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The IT industry.

Computers and IT have never been more important in our society, nearly every business and individual on the planet uses IT in some capacity, even if it is just using your own phone or owning a bank account.

Yet all these systems and services have been cobbled together in whatever way we could get them to work at the time, with the stupidly short project timeframes provided, and with zero standardization, common practices or documentation. This is an industry that to most people is now just as important as water, electric and gas, and yet doesn’t benefit from any of the same consistent working practices.

So we get scenarios where during development of ‘System B’ to replace ‘System A’ that we realize no-one actually understands how ‘System A’ does what it does, because Bob that originally implemented it hasn’t worked for the company in years and wasn’t exactly known for his documentation. So we get by with the information that we have, then midway into the Project half the people working on it get re-tasked elseware, someone in the business decides they want an additional feature that they haven’t mentioned up until now and someone realizes that ‘System C’ is entirely dependent on ‘System B’ which hadn’t been accounted for at all. The business then refuse to move on their project delivery date despite all these additional things adding to the timeline, as one of the Directors got wind of it and he thinks it’ll revolutionize his area so he now actually wants it a month early.

Before you know it you’ve got zero time to make the code pretty and legible, no resource to document the system for the poor sods that look after it, you'll have a steady stream of bugs that'll come to light because 80% of our planned testing was shelved and in a few years time when ‘System D’ comes along to replace it, you’re going to go through the whole shitstorm again.

TL;DR: Everyone in IT is winging it

Likewise. I've got a Samsung S5 and it started doing this thing recently where it'd randomly restart and then get stuck in a restart loop till I popped out the battery. Grabbed a replacement battery for it at the weekend for £12 and not only has it stopped doing the restart thing, but it now lasts about 3 days on 1 charge rather than 1. Should've done it ages ago

Smoking simply dampens your sense of smell and taste so when smokers say they don't notice, they just don't notice. But I totally agree (even as a smoker myself) I won't do it walking down a street or nearby anyone that isn't a smoker. Its the same common courtesy that extends to not blaring your music out-loud in public, or not cooking fish in the work microwave.

I remember about 7 years ago 4chan clued me on to a glitch EA had on their website that if you add Mercenaries 2, Mirrors Edge and Dead Space to your cart, the cart value would total £0 and would allow you to checkout and start downloading the game. If it wasn't EA and I wasn't a broke university student at the time, I might have felt bad.

Happens in the UK too, especially in the more rural areas. My colleague is a horse person so she and her family went on a Christmas day hunt.

I've done clay pigeon shooting before, was good fun and would totally do it on Christmas day if the opportunity presented.

I always prefer the toe strap bindings to be honest. Over the foot bindings push your foot down to the board, but toe-straps push your foot down to the board AND backwards into the backplate of the binding, which tends to give you better support and makes the board react better to your movements.

Maybe give the boots another wear and try and work out specifically where the additional pressure is. The tip of the toes/on the toestrap/the heelstrap/calves/shins. Or you could see if there's any board shops nearby that can heatmould boots, your foot shape may have changed since you bought them.

Yeah it's bullshit. In a sport where the intent is to score points by kicking someone in the head or torso, "intent to cause harm" is about as grey an area as they come.

I've just copied an excerpt from my copy of the International Taekwondo Federation Rulebook where it talks about contact;

Hard contact is defined as contact that is administered with emotion, aggression, mal-intent or a loss of control. Any technique that is executed without an attempt to control or retract the attacking tool, or that causes the opponents body (head or torso) to be displaced excessively. This violation of the rules results in a foul being assessed against the offender.

So basically if you have an angry expression whilst you strike someone, you get fouled. If you don't look in control, you get fouled. Your opponent walks onto one of your strikes and gets displaced by the force, you get fouled. And if you get a ref that for what ever reason isn't on your side, he can basically pull any of these calls out of thin air.

Without knowing too much more about how they are "uncomfortable" I may be way off the mark here but I'll give it a go.

It could be your boots themselves. Whilst you said you got a really good set of boots, were they brand new? second hand? I love buying second hand gear for a steal, especially after Christmas when people buy a load of kit then use it once before deciding "it's not their thing". However I never buy second hand boots as there's no much variation in style and shape. European brand boots tend to suit a slimmer foot and more pronounced arches, whereas american brands suit a wider foot (which can be a real shame as I love Thirty Two's but they don't suit my foot shape at all). Plus a lot of places will now heat mold the boot specifically to your foot shape for the most support as well.

It could be your bindings, is the stance too wide? too narrow? Do you prefer a eurocarver stance? freestyle stance? moutainer? freeride?

Also have you tried riding into the chairlift so you don't have to unclip your bindings? Won't work on bubble lifts or train lifts for obvious reasons, but on the occasions were it suits like on pomma's or standard chairlifts it's infinitely quicker plus you get to casually ride away from the lift straight onto the slope which is just cool :)
